Sondra Lowell has made two insufferable movies that even she can't endure, and yet by some standards she might be the most successful filmmaker to have ever lived. Lowell's films 'WebcamMurder.com' and 'Sublime Crime: A Subliminal Mystery' are (ingeniously titled) features explicitly designed to put her audiences to sleep, and the critics agree that her work achieves its goals with a consistency seldom seen in the careers of even the most celebrated auteurs (the Los Angeles Times described 'WebcamMurder.com' as "The most boring talkie ever made"). With just two films to her name, Lowell is not only the progenitor of the "film sleepy" genre (a term she coined to describe her work), but also its greatest artistic force.
As Alexander Fleming once happened upon Penicillin, so too did Sondra Lowell stumble upon her earth-shaking gift as if by divine providence. An exceptionally enigmatic character,...

Just when you thought every type of film had been done before, filmmaker Sondra Lowell has pioneered an entirely new genre called "Film Sleepy." As the name suggests, her films are slow and boring by design, and meant to induce audiences to sleep. To Lowell's credit, she started creating these films in order to play to her strengths after receiving unrelenting criticism from her professors and peers while taking film classes at UCLA. If only more film students would take criticism so constructively. That said, aren't there enough movies that already unintentionally fall into this genre?...

Dear Mr. Zucker, As someone who’s been looking to get into the spiritual life-coaching industry and has attended several teleseminars on how to do so, I believe my insights can bring NBC, its affiliates and all concerned a win-win solution to the current "Tonight Show" disarray. Be a uniter, not a divider. Give them both the "Tonight Show." But not, for heaven’s sake, as you are planning now, with Jay at 11:35 and Conan at 12:05. That’s just going to prolong the animosity and turn fans of one against the other. The spiritual (though not necessa...

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford was considered a strong contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination until alarm over his six day disappearance spread across the nation, culminating in a tear-stained press conference that revealed he had been neither hiking nor writing nor driving aimlessly around Buenos Aires but crying with the (other) woman he loved.
Sanford bared his soul, apologizing to his family, his staff and most of the free world for his lies and obfuscations. He resigned as head of the Republican Governor's Association. His wife Jenny agreed to...

Did Susan Boyle self-destruct? Or is Simon Cowell tricking us again?
At first we could hope it was all a misunderstanding and Susan Boyle didn’t really scream and swear at the police. Or at her biggest "Britain's Got Talent" rival, 12-year-old Shaheen Jafargholi, as she watched him on the telly in her hotel bar.
Or, worst of all, threaten to leave the show -- only days before Saturday’s finale, the most important day of her life.
Now it’s all been confirmed -- in the British tabloids that started the whole mess and in liv...

It’s over.
Kris Allen won 'American Idol," and it wasn’t even close.
The big question now is -- how is this going to affect this week’s outcome of "Britain’s Got Talent?"
It’s not like the old days, when what happened in America stayed in America. Word has surely gotten back to the Old Country that there was a backlash against the pre-anointed winner.
And it’s going to have repercussions.
Were "American Idol" fans sick of Simon te...

On Thursday, May 7, the 11th day of her hunger strike, Mia Farrow’s only communication was her blog post, “I’m really struggling today.” Her “Day 12” message was, “Feeling awful. Blood sugar under 40. Muscles hurt. I won’t be able to continue much longer.” She didn’t explain why she hadn’t quit already.
For far too close to two weeks, she had kept Darfur in the news and rallied nearly 300 co-fasters, for varying lengths of time and varying levels of “fasting.” Some ate as much as a standard Darfuri diet...

Has Britain got too much talent? Or have I got too much time on my hands?
In my last post, I researched whether the Britain's Got Talent turnabout on Susan Boyle, from ridicule to reverence, was faked. I was open to whatever truth turned up and I am sticking with my conclusion that, while edited for theatrical effect, the judges' and audience's emotions were real.
But enough is enough.
In the two episodes since the world fell in love with Susan, two coincidences occurred so serendipitously, so presc...

I’m not one of those bullies who looked at Susan Boyle’s audition on "Britain's Got Talent" and went, “Harumph! She’s nowhere as good as Elaine Paige, whoever that is, how dare she aim so high.” Though I did later learn from Letty Cottin Pogrebin in one of Huffington Post’s multitudinous articles on Susan’s triumph that Elaine is “the First Lady of the British Musical Theater.”
I cried each time I watched the audition, just like Demi M and Patti LP, and even teared up when I was only thinking about it.
