The original Dexter television series ran for eight seasons on Showtime. Now, this serial killer has returned for what appears to be a close-ended mini-series. If the ratings are strong enough, could Dexter: New Blood be renewed for a second season anyway? Stay tuned.

"Dexter" is a show with a history almost as tumultuous as that of its titular antihero. The gory crime drama follows Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a blood spatter analyst by day and vigilante serial killer by night. Season 1 of the Showtime drama debuted in 2006 to positive reviews and reigned as the premium channel's highest-rated series for the next four years. Seasons 2 and 4 are widely regarded as the show's best, with the latter boasting a fantastic performance by John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer, one of TV's most terrifying villains. After the departure of showrunner Clyde Phillips, "Dexter" began a downward slide that ran all the way up to its disappointing series finale, frequently remembered as one of the worst of all time. Eight years after Dexter drove his boat into the eye of a hurricane, the serial killer with a heart of gold returned in "Dexter: New Blood," a...

Clancy Brown admits he was not familiar with “Dexter,” the Emmy-winning Showtime series starring Michael C. Hall, before signing on for the reboot, “Dexter: New Blood” in 2021. “I was a little afraid of it because, I thought, a hero who’s a serial killer?” Brown admits. “Plus I really liked Michael in ‘Six Feet Under’ and I didn’t want to see him be what I thought a serial killer would be. But it’s kind of a remarkable show. He’s such an attractive, horrible character. Once we started talking in earnest about doing it, I binged the whole thing and was blown away by how good it is and how good the writing was.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

This Dexter: New Blood review contains spoilers.
Not many shows get a second chance at a finale. But then again, not many shows’ first finales are as bad as Dexter’s was.
After the original Dexter series finale back in 2013 was received, let’s say, less than warmly, Showtime decided to try it again. Following a seven year cool-off period, the network invited original showrunner Clyde Phillips back to envision a new end for Bay Harbor Butcher in the limited series Dexter: New Blood.
Now Dexter: New Blood’s new ending has come and gone and despite mixed fan reaction, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t an improvement…or at least we believe it is. Still, while Dexter: New Blood did an excellent job in wrapping up Dexter’s story once and for all, it left some secondary Dexter characters out in the cold. That’s partly...

Spoiler Alert: This story includes details from the finale of Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood.
It’s truly the end of an era as the fate of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) has been sealed in the final episode of Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood. And whether or not fans like the ending this time around, there’s no going back.
“Dexter Morgan is dead,” series showrunner Clyde Phillips confirmed to Deadline in a conversation that will run immediately following this recap.
Nearly a decade after America’s favorite fictional serial killer disappeared into a Miami hurricane in the original series finale, in New Blood it is revealed that Dexter was alive and well living in Iron Lake, NY under the alias Jim Lindsay.
He had completely changed his life and left every part of his old life behind, until right around the time someone from his past found him.

How is Dexter going to explain this away? During the Dec. 5 episode of Dexter: New Blood, Chief of Police Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) learned that her boyfriend Jim Lindsay is, in reality, former Miami resident Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall). The revelation came about after an encounter with Captain Angel Batista—shout-out to the return of David Zayas—who revealed that a former colleague had a son named Harrison. Then, Angela's daughter Audrey (Johnny Sequoyah) shared that Iron Lake teen Harrison (Jack Alcott) confessed that his dad's name isn't really Jim. After some internet sleuthing, Angela found Dexter's obituary, which included a very telling photo. And,...

“Dexter: New Blood” staged a reunion (of sorts) in the December 5 episode when Dexter’s new girlfriend, Iron Lake Chief of Police Angela Bishop (Julia Jones), met his old coworker, Miami Metro Captain Angel Batista (David Zayas). The last time viewers saw Batista was in the 2013 series finale, when Dexter (Michael C. Hall) drove his boat into a hurricane and made everyone believe he and his son Harrison had died. Zayas now reveals he had “mixed feelings” about that controversial ending, telling EW, “I felt it might’ve been a little underwhelming.”

A decade after Dexter Morgan sailed off into the sunset storm, he’s back and ready for some new blood. Showtime officially greenlit a “Dexter” revival in October 2020, with the premiere date taking place on November 7, 2021. Michael C. Hall is back, of course, as the adorably geeky Bay Harbor Butcher, aka the Miami, Fl blood splatter analyst/serial killer who focuses his bloodlust on murdering other serial killers. Original showrunner Clyde Phillips is also back as an executive producer of the new episodes. Here’s everything to know about “Dexter: New Blood” Season 9, including the cast and trailer.

If Dexter Morgan thought he had problems before, Sunday’s episode of Dexter: New Blood raised the stakes in some major ways.
Not only did things take a rough turn with teen son Harrison — the boy Od-ed at a party! — but someone close to Dex learned the stone-cold truth behind his “Jim Lindsay” alias. Plus, an old face from the series proper made a surprise return, and Kurt Caldwell’s true villainy was more or less confirmed. It was a meaty episode, so let’s dive right into this recap of “Runaway.”

In Sunday’s episode of Dexter: New Blood, Dexter’s greatest fear may have become reality.
While Harrison was being hailed as the savior of his high school for thwarting a potential shooting, Dexter’s suspicions over his son’s story led him down an unsettling rabbit hole. Dexter Morgan’s head must be an interesting place to be. Besides recently coming out of a nearly 10-year break from committing murder, the well-intentioned serial killer, played by Michael C. Hall, has been under an increasing amount of pressure in the revival series Dexter: New Blood. Besides killing again, he’s also come face-to-face with the now-teenage son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), he left behind when he faked his death almost a decade earlier. Plus, he’s maintaining the pretend identity of Iron Lake, New York, community member Jim Lindsay to keep his murderous past in the past. However, that past is very present since in his mind he sees and hears the voice of his deceased sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter). Deb’s presence in Dexter’s life is much more intense and more aggressive than when Dexter would see and hear his adopted father Harry (James Remar) in the original series.

Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) cannot seem to avoid getting himself into tight spots. Of course, when the Dexter: New Blood revival began, he’d been living a few idyllic years in Iron Lake, NY (under the name Jim Lindsay) and not killing. But when we caught up with him for the first time since the Showtime drama’s 2013 series finale, he quickly has his first kill in nearly a decade and is reunited with his now-teenaged son Harrison (Jack Alcott) and things have been escalating ever since. For Hall, stepping back into the shoes of the well-intentioned serial killer wasn’t a huge challenge for him. “I think the fact that the writers were able to hit that target, that honored our desire to do something new but also honored something fundamental about the show’s DNA and the character,” he told TV Insider’s Jim Halterman. “I discovered he was still there.

On Dexter: New Blood Season 1 Episode 2, that's exactly what he does.
Dexter is more at odds with himself than ever before, but his self-preservation instincts are still intact.
Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) is much more animated "conscience" to Dexter than Harry.
No disrespect to James Remar -- he was always solid -- but as Dexter's priorities and actions have shifted, so has the adversarial voice in his head, foul-mouthed and full of rage.
Carpenter rips and tears into this new version of her old character with her teeth bare, shredding Dexter every chance she gets.

Dexter Morgan is proof that there is life after death. Well, fake death, that is. Eight years after the Miami serial killer of bad guys disappeared in a hurricane on the 2006–13 drama’s much-derided ending, the antihero is back for a 10-episode thrill ride. Says Hall, “We wanted to do something decidedly new but also maintain fundamental parts of the original.” It’s safe to say the limited revival absolutely, uh, kills it. Picking up 10 years after the finale, New Blood shows Dexter with a new identity (mild-mannered cashier Jim Lindsay), a new home and a new vow not to kill. For the past decade, he “has been committed to abstinence,” explains Hall, until unfortunate events in the November 7 debut change that. “This show is Dexter,” says exec producer Clyde Phillips with a laugh, “and people die.” Dana Starbard/Showtime While Dexter has blood on his hands in the present,...

Dexter: New Blood showrunner Clyde Phillips isn’t shy when looking back at his work on the series proper. When we mention that Season 4 was “arguably the show’s best season,” the executive producer interrupts the declaration with a laugh and an exclamation: “Inarguably!”
Phillips left the original show following a fourth season that saw Dexter take down the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow), shortly after Trinity left wife Rita (Julie Benz) dead and bloodied in a bathtub. Now, Phillips is back to reclaim the reins in Showtime’s new limited event series (premiering Sunday at 9/8c).

Ladies and gentlemen: Dexter Morgan is back for his encore.
It’s been eight years since Miami’s most under-the-radar serial killer dumped his sister’s body into the sea and disappeared into the night. If you’ll recall, Dexter boated through a hurricane, faked his own death and started a new life as a lumberjack in rural Oregon. But in Showtime’s new event series Dexter: New Blood (premiering Sunday at 9/8c), fans will finally get a chance to revisit the troubled-yet-beloved character, as a dangerous new tale unravels for Dexter and his dark passenger — one which hopefully sticks the landing this time.

Revisiting one of the biggest roles of your career after nearly 10 years could be overwhelming. But how does Michael C. Hall feel about returning to the iconic role of beloved serial killer for Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood? He does a pretty good job of explaining in TV Insider’s exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette, seen above. The series is returning to the cabler on Sunday, November 7, when we pick up with the very much alive Dexter Morgan (who faked his death in a hurricane in the original series’ finale in 2013). Now, we find him going by the name Jim Lindsay and living a seemingly normal, low key life in the fictional town of Iron Lake, New York. While working at a bait-and-tackle shop in the small town, Dexter has become adept at quieting any of his “dark passenger” instincts that previously led him to ...

It’s about bloody time! Die-hard Dexter fans who didn’t love the 2006–13 series’ controversial finale — principled serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) faked his death and went into hiding in Oregon — get a do-over with this 10-episode revival. The former Miami Pd blood spatter expert now resides in idyllic (fictional) Iron Lake, New York, under the name Jim Lindsay (a nod to Dexter novelist Jeff Lindsay). He “is trying to be as innocuous and untempted [to kill] as possible,” explains exec producer Clyde Phillips. (Credit: Seacia Pavao/Showtime) But this truck-stop town “is sort of a Bermuda Triangle of women who go missing.” Which means Dexter’s Dark Passenger — the inner voice that leads him to eliminate bad guys — can’t be ignored. Continues Phillips: “This is Dexter, so people are going to die.” One target: the imposing Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown), who “has too much bad history.” Expect to see a few familiar faces,...

Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is living his best life in the new season of Dexter...or at least the best life of a nice man named Jim Lindsay. Dexter's actual best life probably involves a lot more serial killing than he's doing in the new trailer for the Showtime revival, but he does seem pretty happy. He's got a police chief girlfriend, a retail job and a lot of friends, but a sinister mystery involving missing people seems to be bringing up his old murderous instincts. These days, those instincts appear in the form of Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), Dexter's dead adopted sister. "You are a serial killer," she reminds him in the trailer. "You love that you're getting...

Yesterday at the 2021 Television Critics Association summer press tour, journalists were given a lot of new information about Showtime’s upcoming Dexter revival, Dexter: New Blood. The continuation of one of Showtime’s most popular dramas is one of the most anticipated series of the year, but so far, few details have been revealed. That all changed when showrunner Clyde Phillips and stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter started to spill their guts, metaphorically speaking, about what fans and skeptics alike can expect from the forthcoming miniseries.
First and most importantly, Phillips and co. knew that in continuing the story, they would have to contend with the original series’ infamous, contentious ending, and that there was no way to erase the sight of Dexter Morgan: lumberjack.

The Dark Passenger is back. Dexter Morgan is returning to Showtime in Dexter: New Blood, and the new limited series appears to be aiming to erase the, let’s call it contentious, reputation of the Dexter series finale. You can check out the first look at Dexter: New Blood below.
Michael C. Hall is back as everyone’s favorite compulsive serial killer, this time taking up residence in snowy upstate New York under the alias Jim Lindsay (the name appears to be a nod to Dexter creator Jeff Lindsay). Dexter is once again hiding in plain sight, but he knows that “Every day I walk through this world, faking it. Knowing if someone knows who I am, that’s it.” Dex doesn’t appear to have changed his look much, meaning that in the world of Dexter, you can still count on the FBI to be pretty incompetent.

Although in the new clip Dexter/Jim seems generally well-adjusted, he’s also doing a lot of brooding over the possibility that his real identity might come out, while simultaneously struggling to repress his urge to maim and kill.

Michael C. Hall — serial killer Dexter Morgan himself — has known since Showtime’s serial killer drama “Dexter” ended that a return to the character was a possibility. Instead of being killed off in the end, he only faked his death, leaving his young son with another killer (Yvonne Strahovski) and hiding out as a lumberjack.
“It’s come up in different forms,” Hall said of revivals during the show’s Comic-Con@Home panel on Sunday. “It never felt quite right in terms of the story that was presented or in terms of the timing. But, I think, along with everybody on this panel and along with everybody who’s ever watched the show and is a fan of the show, I myself have also wondered what the hell happened to this guy. And I think enough has time has passed and the storytelling opportunities were a lot more interesting for...

Nearly a decade since everyone’s favorite serial killer moved away and became a logger in 2013, Showtime’s Dexter is back—at Comic-Con@Home, at least. The show’s big return to Comic-Con featured Michael C. Hall, series showrunner from seasons 1-4, Clyde Phillips, executive producers Marcos Siega and Scott Reynolds, and Julia Jones, who will make her debut in the limited series as Dexter’s love interest Angela Bishop.
The panelists discussed where fans will find Dexter, a former Miami Metro Police Department forensic technician who moonlights as a notorious serial killer, when the next 10 episodes premiere on Nov. 7 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.
“It was important that this not be Dexter season 9,” Phillips stated. We wanted to acknowledge that nearly 10 years have passed and we pick up with Dexter being in another place far away from Miami.”

It’s bound to be a bit of a surprise when Jim Lindsay turns out to be someone other than who people thought he was, but from the look of this teaser trailer, especially at the end, Dexter is definitely feeling the need to get back to the life he remembers. It does feel a bit cliche to have turned Dexter into the small-town guy with the dark past that no one knows about, but given that he’s returning for a limited run it can be dealt with by a lot of fans since he’s not bound to be staying where

Michael C. Hall's lovable serial killer character, Dexter Morgan, is getting a new name and occupation for Showtime's upcoming revival series. According to the show's official Twitter account, Dexter's new name will be Jim Lindsay, and he's a sales associate for a fish and game company called Fred's Fish & Game. If you ask me, this seems like a fine fit for the former Bay Harbor Butcher, what with him now having easy access to so many sharp…...
