Movies provide a comforting cardigan of wish-fulfilment, and not just for audiences: at an age when most people would be getting an early night with a cup of tea and a crossword puzzle, Blood Father gives 60-year-old Mel Gibson the chance to fire guns, punch bad guys and ride around on a Harley without a crash helmet. If that sounds ageist, bear in mind that I’m about two decades younger than Mel and currently sitting at my desk, looking forward to an early night with a cup of tea and a crossword puzzle.
Still, Mel Gibson clearly isn’t ageing like a typical guy in his 60s. In Blood Father, his character wears a salt-and-pepper beard like an Old Testament prophet and grumbles bitterly about immigrants stealing jobs, but he also has the toned biceps of a Russian shot putter and...

If this be the movie jail that Mel Gibson is destined to die in, it could be a whole lot worse. Blood Father, directed by Jean-François Richet (Mesrine, Assault on Precinct 13), works remarkably well as a grindhouse throwback, sporting a screenplay (from Peter Craig and Andrea Berloff, based on Craig’s novel) that’s better than it has any right to be.
John Link (Gibson) is a burned-out alcoholic who we meet in the middle of an AA meeting. He’s celebrating two years sober while still lamenting the bridges he’s burned and a daughter he hasn’t seen in some time. Only moments later, Link and his daughter, Lydia (Erin Moriarty), are reunited, a hail of gunfire and some bad men following them. “She’s every loser’s lucky day,” Link says of her, a drug addict who accidentally pulled the trigger on her criminal boyfriend, Jonah...

If Mel Gibson has been quietly staging a career comeback in recent years with roles in The Expendables 3 and Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, then 2016 could well go down as a defining turning point for the divisive Aussie.
For the first time since Apocalypto ten years ago, Gibson is back behind the lens for Hacksaw Ridge, the Oscar-friendly war thriller due to land in November. He’s also lined up a starring role in Blood Father, an old-school thriller that reads like Taken repurposed for the sun-kissed plains of Albuquerque.
Jean-François Richet is behind the lens, with Gibson stepping into the dusty shoes of an ex-convict turned vengeful patriarch, who “fights to protect his estranged daughter from the drug cartel that is hunting her down. In this thrilling action film, John Link must use his connections from his past life and his skills as an ex-criminal to keep him and his daughter alive.

It's nice to see that Mel Gibson has sobered up long enough to make a movie and heck, it looks like he's even trying to revive the badass persona of his early career.
Already a minor hit coming out of an early festival run, Blood Father stars Gibson as John Link, an ex-con who returns to a life of crime when he re-unites with his 16-year old daughter who is on the run from drug dealers who are trying to kill her.
In addition to Gibson, the movie co-stars Erin Moriarty as John's daughter Lydia, William H. Macy, Diego Luna and Michael Parks.

“Blood Father” follows John Link (Mel Gibson), an ex-convict and recovering alcoholic who runs a tattoo parlor out of his dusty trailer on the outskirts of Los Angeles. When his estranged daughter (Erin Moriarty) shows up out of the blue on the lam after a drug deal gone bad, Link is forced to protect her when a roving drug cartel comes after her with everything they’ve got. The film also features William H. Macy (“Fargo”), Elisabeth Röhm (“Angel”), Diego Luna (“Y tu mamá también”), Thomas Mann (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”), Dale Dickey (“Winter;s Bone”), and more. Lionsgate just dropped a new teaser poster, trailer, and release date for Mel Gibson's upcoming action movie Blood Father. While it looks like a pretty solid thriller and I'm sure most people will be perfectly content to simply watch the movie and completely divorce themselves from Gibson's off-screen behavior, I'm fascinated by the connections that can be drawn between his real life and what we see in this movie. The trailer shows Gibson's character telling his daughter that she'll face God for the mistakes she's made, and it's interesting to wonder if the actor might be working through some of his own past issues on screen here. If not, at least it looks like it has some cool action for fans to enjoy.

Mel Gibson has been (very) slowly but (somewhat) surely reshaping his career after a long downhill spiral. Edge of Darkness reminded the world of his screen presence, then in The Beaver, he was a meek, shy loner, contrasting his performance in Get the Gringo, where he was a gruff, hard-edged con. Now, he continues the latter approach with the second trailer for Blood Father, directed by Mesrine helmer Jean-François Richet.
After years alone in the desert running a tattoo shop and always on the lookout for his wayward daughter, ex-con John Link (Gibson) puts both feet back into murky waters when she shows up at his door in need of help. It is scripted by author Peter Craig who, alongside Andrea Berloff (co-writer of Straight Outta Compton), looks to have chiseled a mean and enjoyable, if somewhat formulaic ride.

If Mel Gibson makes a great movie, and no one in America wants to see it, does it make a sound? His last lead in a genre film, “Get the Gringo,” got positive reviews in 2012 but had a blink-and-you-missed-it theatrical release. It would be a real shame if his latest, “Blood Father” were to meet the same fate — it’s grungy and action-packed, yes, but it also features the kind of sharp characterization and clever dialogue that justifies the presence of an old pro like Gibson. We first meet a very craggy John Link (Gibson) when he’s celebrating his.

Say what you will about Mel Gibson, but we’re still fans. Sure his off-screen antics were troublesome to family and friends, but for the rest of us — those of us who don’t know him personally — all we really have are his performances and films. Mad Max, Gallipoli, The Bounty, Lethal Weapon, Tequila Sunrise, Maverick, Ransom, Payback, The Patriot, Signs, Get the Gringo. The guy makes good movies, typically playing characters involved in violent situations, and now the first trailer has dropped for his latest film where he plays a character involved in a violent situation. Proving he still knows how to own a screen, Mel Gibson has all the right moves in the new trailer for his forthcoming film “Blood Father.”
Slated to hit theaters this fall, the gritty action drama also stars William H. Macy, Erin Moriarty, Thomas Mann and Elisabeth Rohm, all under the direction of Jean-Francois Richet.
Per the synopsis, “John Link is an ex-convict who must protect his estranged daughter from violent drug dealers.” Think “Taken” but with less flash and more beard!

There was a time when Mel Gibson was one of the most bankable stars on the planet. In recent years, however, we.ve seen him only sparingly in front of the camera. If you were a fan of Gibson in his action hero days of the 80.s and 90.s then it looks like his new film may be right down your alley. Check out the trailer for Blood Father. In Blood Father, Mel Gibson will play John Link, an ex-con tattoo artist whose daughter comes back into his life after being missing for several years, and looks to have a great deal of bad news chasing after her. At one point in the trailer, we see a wanted poster with her picture on it, complete with a $30,000 reward, so it appears the daughter, played by Erin Moriarty, most recently of the Netflix series Jessica Jones, has followed in her father...

Barring minor roles in both Machete Kills and action sequel The Expendables 3, it’s going on half a decade since we last saw Mel Gibson headline a feature film. That’s all about to change with the release of Blood Father later in 2016, an old-school thriller that has Gibson assume the role of a vengeful patriarch known as John Link.
An ex-convict seeking redemption – stop us if you’ve heard this one before – Blood Father pulls Gibson’s grizzled lead back into the thick of the action when he is tasked with protecting his estranged daughter (Erin Moriarty) from a deadly drug ring. It’s all very familiar territory. Take the espionage thriller beats of Taken and swap out a European city setting with the sun-kissed desert outback (Mad Max?) and you’ll begin to get a sense of the film’s trite genre tendencies.

Mel Gibson returns to the screen in territory more familiar to that of Liam Neeson in recent years in the first trailer for his newest starring vehicle. "Blood Father" has Gibson playing John Link, an ex-convict who must protect his estranged daughter (Erin Moriarty) from violent drug dealers.
William H. Macy, Thomas Mann, Elisabeth Rohm, Diego Luna and Michael Parks also star in the project which boasts a script by Peter Craig ("The Town") and has been directed by "Mesrine" helmer Jean-Francois Richet. It’s been four years since Mel Gibson last led a feature with 2012’s Get the Gringo, but he’s back this year on both sides of the camera. Later this year we expect his first directorial effort in a decade, the Andrew Garfield-led WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge, to arrive, but first we have Blood Father, an actioner directed by Jean-François Richet (Mesrine).
The first trailer has now landed today thanks to its Australian distributors, where it’ll arrive there in late August (it is still awaiting a U.S. release date from Lionsgate). The story concerns an ex-convict father who tracks down and protects his daughter from danger, and judging from the previews, there’s a good amount of action to be had. Also starring William H. There are few better ways to predict the Cannes lineup than looking up whatever Wild Bunch are soon putting out. The French production outfit earns as much attention as anyone around mid-May, and there are at least two in-development titles that have caught our attention — though you wouldn’t necessarily expect that they have the same people working behind the scenes.
They are The Red Turtle, a co-production with Studio Ghibli directed by Michaël Dudok de Wit, and Blood Father, a thriller directed by Jean-François Richet that stars Mel Gibson, William H. Macy, Diego Luna, Michael Parks, and Erin Moriarty (The Kings of Summer, Jessica Jones), among others. Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of the release of Die Hard. Know how much it made in it’s opening weekend? $601,851. Of course, that was from only 21 screens in 20 cities. Can you imagine an action movie like this getting such a limited debut today? Well, nobody saw the movie coming, at least not on the level we see it at today, though Fox also hoped the slower roll-out would spark buzz. A modern day take on the western, with a lot of allusion to drive that idea home, the first Die Hard sort of originated a new subgenre of the right place, right time (and wrong place, wrong time) hero that has the action drop in his lap. It’s a real classic, one that truly needs to be added to the National Film Registry (nominate it here), thanks to its influence on the next three decades of cinema (and beyond, since...
