Christmas Books That Were Turned Into Movies ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Not everyone likes reading books. It demands a big chunk of your time and a lot of concentration. And come on, let’s be real, why bother when you can easily watch a two-hour movie adaptation that covers all the important scenes and leaves out all the fillers? Besides, even for the most avid book readers, diving into Christmas-themed books might not be very high up on their list of holiday priorities. So, what better way to fill in that book void on Christmas than by watching some Christmas films based on books?
Here are 5 holiday-themed books that were turned into movies.

Walt Disney Pictures’ A Goofy Movie (1995) remains a beloved classic in the world of animated films. The animated film was created as a standalone follow-up to The Disney Afternoon series Goof Troop. The Kevin Lima-directed A Goofy Movie became one of the favorite animated films for TV and movie audiences of the 90s. Unsurprisingly, over the years, it became a cult classic. With its catchy soundtrack, heartwarming father-son story, and iconic characters, it has left an enduring mark on the hearts of fans of all ages. However, as time has passed, many of the voices behind the characters in...

Debating which Disney animated film reigns supreme as the greatest of all time is a fool's errand, but if I was given a vote, I'd throw some love toward "A Goofy Movie." While it's not about a singing princess making her dreams come true or "Hamlet" but with lions, "A Goofy Movie" is a silly, heartwarming road-trip movie about generational differences and coming-of-age in a single-parent household. As a youngster, I very much saw myself in Max Goof (Jason Marsden), a rebellious teen constantly embarrassed by his well-meaning father and hiding his adolescent insecurity by performing. I distinctly remember sharing the second-hand embarrassment during the pair's excursion to Lester's Possum Park, imagining how I too would cringe out of my skin if my parents were that excited about broken, animatronic nightmare possums.
As I grew older, my perspective shifted. Re-watching "A Goofy Movie" as an adult, I couldn't help myself from immediately siding with Goofy.

When it comes to iconic Disney animated characters, Goofy comes up a few notches below Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. Those two saw massive popularity early on in the company's lifespan, and even got to lead theatrical movies like 1944's "The Three Caballeros" with Donald, or Mickey starring in the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" episode of the 1940 film "Fantasia." Goofy's appeal was different, less wide-ranging, and more eccentric than a perpetually exasperated duck or a blandly kind mouse. You couldn't even tell what species he was, although his longtime voice actor Bill Farmer claims he is a dog.
Goofy eventually did get to lead a theatrical film, although several decades after his 1932 debut. The character was best known for Disney shorts those days, and for his cartoony antics in them. As you could guess from his name, he was careless and clumsy, and his oblivious goofball shtick would often result in wildly elaborate slapstick.

On October 27, 2022, Kevin Lima received quite a surprise.
"My social media all just blew up," he told me. "I was like, 'What the hell is this?'"
Lima is the director of 1995's "A Goofy Movie," and although his film has become widely beloved in the years since its initial release, he certainly didn't expect it to be the subject of a full episode of the final season of Donald Glover's FX series "Atlanta." The fourth season's eighth episode, entitled "The Goof Who Sat By The Door," is a hilarious (and highly fictionalized) accounting of the making of "A Goofy Movie."
The episode completely breaks from the format of what "Atlanta" had ever done before, adopting a documentary style to riff on concepts that appeared previously in movies like "Putney Swope" (in which a fictional Black man is unwittingly made the CEO of a major company) and novels like...

Walt Disney Animation has a long history of presenting stories about adventures. The House of Mouse has taken its audience on adventures into the woods, under the sea, almost there, just around the riverbend, and into the unknown. Thanks to Pete Docter and Bob Peterson's "Up," Disney fans have been saying, "Adventure is out there!" which has become an unofficial motto for most of Disney's most beloved tales. Now, "Strange World," which is currently in theaters, is continuing the adventure. Sharing the recognizable vibes of newsreels and pulp novels, it would make sense to pair the latest film from Walt Disney Animation with the acclaimed Pixar classic for a double feature. However, the Clade Family's journey to save Avalonia has more in common with a different revered Disney movie: "A Goofy Movie."

It’s perhaps a Herculean task to take on the challenge of making a sequel to a movie an entire generation came up on. So, Adam Shankman decided to do it twice in one year. And, according to the filmmaker, the real challenge of making a sequel is realizing that fans don’t always want too much growth in their characters.
First, he executive produced “Hocus Pocus 2” for Disney+, and now, he’s celebrating the release of “Disenchanted,” which he directed. Of course, he celebrated very far away from social media for the first few days on the latter, so he can avoid seeing too many reactions, good or bad. He’s happy with what he made, and he simply hopes the people who came up on “Enchanted” are happy too.

The director of Enchanted has said that “Hollywood politics” meant he was “uninvited” to take part in the sequel.
Kevin Lima’s musical romcom, starring Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey, was released in 2007 to box office success and praise from critics
The film’s sequel, titled Disenchanted, in which Adams and Dempsey reprise their roles, was released in November this year. The follow-up was directed by Adam Shankman instead of Lima.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lima opened up about not being asked to direct the new film.
Lima told the publication that he was “shocked” to not be asked to be involved in the movie, which has received less than favourable reviews from critics and fans.
He said: “A perfect storm of a change of executives and Hollywood politics made it so that I was uninvited to the party, unfortunately.
“It was a very, very sad turn.

Fifteen years ago, Disney charmed viewers by sending up its own film catalog with Enchanted, and now its director is opening up about challenges in getting the movie made — and his surprise at not being asked to work on the new sequel, Disenchanted.
Enchanted’s origins date back to the late 1990s. The initial script, written by Bill Kelly (Blast From the Past), focused on Giselle, an animated woman who enjoys singing with animal friends (much like Snow White or Sleeping Beauty) but longs for a happily-ever-after. After Giselle and the prince of the magical kingdom fall in love, the evil queen banishes Giselle to a live-action New York City. Kelly tells The Hollywood Reporter of his initial inspiration: “How could you do a modern-day Sound of Music?”

Disney has released the thriller for the much-anticipated Disenchanted, which is a sequel to the movie Enchanted. The movie will be premiered on November 18 on Disney+. With expectations quickly building up, let’s take a quick look at the new thriller. Enchanted, directed by Kevin Lima and first released in 2007, is a musical fantasy romantic comedy film. Enchanted can generally be described as a mock movie about how Disney characters would be if they came into the real world with their unrealistic beliefs and happily-ever-after mindset. Enchanted tells a story of a wicked Queen, Narissa (Susan Sarandon). She discovers her

With a few more weeks in the holiday season, you just know that this weekend’s new take on Pinocchio wouldn’t be the only family-aimed musical family feature based on a fairy tale. Well, “kind of” as this new film is a sequel to an unexpected hit from fifteen years ago that was “inspired” by those lush film fables with hummable tunes that Disney specialized in. In many ways, it was a parody of them, which is ironic since the “mouse house” produced it. Now many fans of that flick may wonder about those 2007 characters. Could they possibly change and become Disenchanted?
This follow-up actually begins in the fully-animated magical world of Andalasia, where the chipmunk Pip (voice of Griffin Newman) reads his twin boys a bedtime story, which, conveniently for “newbies” is a recap of the original film. But the lads implore their pop to tell them just...

The word "Disney" brings so much to mind and has for going on 100 years now. While the sheer scope of what that word means in popular culture has evolved greatly, particularly in recent years with the likes of Lucasfilm, Marvel, The Muppets, and other big IPs being acquired by the House of Mouse, there's still that feeling when something is Disney. We all know it and recognize it instantly. Disney has used that to its advantage in recent years, remaking some of its biggest classics such as "Cinderella" and "The Jungle Book" in live-action to great profit.

The new Disney+ film "Disenchanted" is a long time coming, following up the 2007 comedy that served as Amy Adams' breakout role. In "Disenchanted," Giselle, an animated princess who winds up in New York City, inadvertently brings fairytale characters, like her old friend Pip the chipmunk, to our world. This time around, Pip's a lot chattier, and is now voiced by Griffin Newman, comedian, co-host of the popular movie podcast "Blank Check with Griffin and David," and actor from "The Tick" and "Masters of the Universe: Revelation."
/Film sat down with Newman to talk about his unconventional casting, the possibility of becoming a Disney toy, fan encounters, and his recent Twitter suspension.

Enchanted Director Releases Commentary Featuring Never-Before-Seen Storyboards [Exclusive Interview]
This year marks the 15th anniversary of Disney's "Enchanted," and between that and the Adam Shankman-directed sequel debuting on Disney+ later this week, original "Enchanted" director Kevin Lima thought it was the right time to do a proper deep dive into the original film. "I've been thinking about this for 10 years, doing something like this," he told me in a recent interview. "They never did a commentary for the DVD, so I thought it's time to talk about it."
Instead of releasing a simple audio track, Lima has published a feature-length watch-along video on YouTube so viewers can get the two screen experience of syncing up their Blu-ray, DVD, or streaming version of "Enchanted" with this video and hearing the filmmaker's insights into the making of the beloved Amy Adams fairytale film.

About 15 years ago, director Kevin Lima ("A Goofy Movie") made something pretty special with "Enchanted." The 2007 live-action riff on Disney tropes is loaded with charm primarily thanks to Amy Adams as Giselle, the marriage-hopeful Princess who finds herself leaving her animated world of Andalasia for the real world after falling down a well. "Shrek" may have beaten them to the Disney-satire punch, but Adams' earnestness about the whole affair sells the princess parody nevertheless.
Lima isn't returning for the sequel, as "Hairspray" filmmaker Adam Shankman has taken over directing duties. Fortunately, Shankman has worked with Disney before with "The Pacifier" and "Bedtime Stories." Funny enough, he seems to be one of the few people in Hollywood who knows how to effectively utilize James Marsden's talent and charisma, so it's pretty great news that they'll be reunited here.

15 years after "Enchanted" hit theaters, we're finally about to follow up with the lovely Giselle (Amy Adams) and see what the real world has had in store for her. If the newest trailer for "Disenchanted" is anything to go by, she's had to make some big adjustments. Not only has she been married to attorney Robert (Patrick Dempsey) for 10 years, but she's also become the stepmother to his now teenage daughter, Morgan (Gabriella Baldacchino). Add this prototypical tension to the stresses of moving to the suburbs, and Giselle has found herself in over her head.
So, what does a fairy tale character do to alleviate these stresses? You obviously use a magic wand to cast a spell that turns the entire suburb into a fairy tale. Maybe that logic has a few flaws that we see in this latest trailer, including turning into an evil stepmother, but hey, it's the thought that counts.

If you're like me, you firmly believe that "A Goofy Movie" is one of the best (read: the best) Disney movies ever made. Set over the course of one crazy summer, "A Goofy Movie" tells the story of Max Goof (son of Goofy Goof and voiced by Jason Marsden) who, in an attempt to get the attention of his crush Roxanne (voiced by Jenna von Oÿ), stages one of the most impressive stunts ever. During an end-of-year school-wide assembly, Max wows Roxanne by performing a full-on dance number to his favorite band Powerline's song, "Stand Out," and the two make plans to meet up later. But when Goofy (voiced by Bill Farmer) gets wind of Max's poor (read: swoon-worthy) behavior, he thinks a father-son fishing trip is just what Max needs to set him straight.
Obviously, Max is not happy about this, and what follows is an insane road...

It's one of the tragic moments of adulthood. You sit down to watch a film you idolized in your childhood — and haven't seen in just as long — only to discover a far less magical or even entertaining experience. Luckily, that's absolutely not the case with the 1995 Disney classic "A Goofy Movie," which I recently treated myself to a rewatch of. I am happy to report that the movie is still as heartwarming and hilarious as I remember it. From the big laughs of the Bigfoot scene to the teary eyes I still get when Max and Goofy finally reconcile.
But from the very beginning, Disney had less than stellar expectations for "A Goofy Movie" compared to bigger features like "The Lion King" or "Pocahontas." In fact, it wasn't even developed by Walt Disney Animation Studios (then called Walt Disney Feature Animation) but rather by a subdivision called Disneytoon Studios that...

Kevin Lima's "A Goofy Movie" usually isn't listed as part of the Disney Renaissance. The film "wasn't even a B movie. It was a C movie," as Don Hahn (a producer on "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King") recalled to Vanity Fair in honor of the movie's 25th anniversary in 2020. Much of the film's animation was outsourced to Disney Animation's smaller outlets in Paris and Australia, as well as non-Disney studios in Canada and Spain. The whole thing might've been scrapped, too, had it not already been greenlit by the head of Disney's film division, Jeffrey Katzenberg, just prior to his departure in the mid-1990s.
I bring all this up not to trash "A Goofy Movie" (I would never!), but to point out how ironic it is this "C movie" would go on to develop a passionate following, rivaling those for any of the Disney Renaissance hits.

“Enchanted” will always be known as the movie that introduced most of the world to Amy Adams, whisking her from the darling of indie films like “Drop Dead Gorgeous” and “Junebug” to one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors.
But a large part of the reason audiences fell in love with Amy Adams is because they fell under the spell of “Enchanted” as a whole. Exclusive; Sony Pictures has acquired the Betty Brock young reader title No Flying in the House to be turned into a live action feature that will be directed by Kevin Lima, helmer of A Goofy Movie, Tarzan and Enchanted. The film sold as a spec script written by Fred Seton.
The book is being turned into a live action/hybrid film. It concerns bright-eyed 6-year-old Annabel Tippens and her guardian, a 3-inch-tall talking dog who appear on Mrs. Vancourt veranda and changes each of their lives. Annabel brings with her a mystery and soon discovers a magical secret – she is half-fairy, who will be forced to choose between being fully human or fully fairy. Unbeknownst to her, this monumental choice carries with it the fate of two worlds.

Annabel brings with her a mystery and soon discovers a magical secret – she is half-fairy, who will be forced to choose between being fully human or fully fairy. Unbeknownst to her, this monumental choice carries with it the fate of two worlds.

Exclusive: Academy Award-winning filmmaker Brenda Chapman has signed with Range Media Partners.
She most recently directed the live-action fantasy film, Come Away starring Angelina Jolie and David Oyelowo which premiered at Sundance in 2020 and was released later that winter. She was the first woman to ever direct an animated feature for a major studio with DreamWorks Animation’s The Prince of Egypt . She then went on to write and direct the Disney/Pixar film, Brave, which was inspired by her relationship with her daughter and became the first woman to ever win the Academy Award (BAFTA and Golden Globe) for Best Animated Feature. Earlier on in her career, Brenda served as head of story at Disney – the first woman to do so – for the classic animated film The Lion King, for which she won the Annie Award for Best Individual Achievement for Story Contribution in the Field of Animation. Exclusive: Paramount Players prevailed in an auction for Quinceanerx, an original pitch for a musical that Kevin Lima will direct with script by Alvaro Garcia Lecuona, who is writing What If for Billy Porter to direct at Orion.
Here’s the logline for a musical that sounds as original as it is inclusive. Xavier is gender fluid and uses they/them pronouns. In a world where everyone sees them as male, including their mom, a traditional celebration of femininity like quinceanera means everything to this 14 year old and a female cousin enlisted to help. Planning in secret, they hatch a roguish plot to switch places and give Xavier the celebration they deserve. The plan is complicated by fretting Latina mothers, teen crushes and the arrival of a famous father, and Xavier must decide who they want to be, whether or not the world is ready to accept that answer.

There’s no lack of talent on display in Disney+’s latest original feature “Godmothered,” a film built around the charming duo of Isla Fisher and Jillian Bell (already solid casting) that also has the space to include gems like Jane Curtin and June Squibb in roles so supporting that one of them spends most of her screen time cosplaying as the face of a clock. Other supporting roles are kitted out by talented kiddos like Jillian Shea Spaeder and Willa Skye or consistent comedic stars like Utkarsh Ambudkar and Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and the whole thing was cooked up by rising screenwriters Melissa Stack (the underappreciated “The Other Woman”) and Kari Granlund. Even better, it’s all directed by Sharon Maguire, the genius behind the first (and best) “Bridget Jones” film.

With her first live-action feature film under her belt, Oscar winner Brenda Chapman is setting her sights on the next big step: a possible return to the animation world in which she first made a name for herself and broke major barriers while doing it. In 1998, Chapman became the first woman to direct an animated feature from a major studio, thanks to DreamWorks Animation’s “The Prince of Egypt,” which followed her work writing such animated Disney classics as “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
Fresh off bowing her “Come Away” at Sundance, it was reported that Chapman was already teeing up her next project: a live-action hybrid feature based on Claribel Ortega’s YA novel “Ghost Squad,” but in a recent interview, the filmmaker told IndieWire she’s “kind of stepped away” from that project during the pandemic. “I decided to take...

Over the last decade, Disney has found itself dipping increasingly into its own well of nostalgic favorites. Specifically, they’ve been taking their beloved animated classics, remaking them in live-action (or mostly live-action), and producing one blockbuster smash after another.
Not all of these live-action Disney remakes are good, and some of the bad ones have unexpectedly interesting ideas. And some of them actually predate the current (and seemingly never-ending) wave. Let’s take a look at all of the live-action remakes of Disney’s animated classics, going all the way back to the 1990s, to explore which films improved on the original and which ones came up short.
15. “The Jungle Book” (1994)
The first live-action Disney remake of an animated Disney classic is, somehow, still the worst. Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy”) directs this frustratingly inert take on Rudyard Kipling’s stories, which strips the animals of their characterizations and highlights...

Twentieth Century Fox Film’s family division has nabbed the rights to the young-adult science-fiction novel “The Prom Goer’s Interstellar Excursion.”
The Knopf title, published in 2015, was written by author Chris McCoy, who will adapt his own work for the screen. The novel follows Bennett, a teen who lands his dream girl Sophie as a date to the prom, only to see her abducted by aliens in the middle of the New Mexico desert before the big dance. He hitches a ride to outer space with some eccentric musicians, as one does.
Vanessa Morrison, Nate Hopper, and Rachel Yeung are overseeing for Fox Family. Chernin Entertainment will produce the pic.

An update on the status of an Enchanted sequel has arisen from the depths of the film’s development from the film’s director, Adam Shankman, revealing that the project is finally moving along.
The follow-up, which has been in development since 2010, will be titled Disenchanted and will follow Giselle – which sees Amy Adams reprise her role – 10 years after the original. Set in New York, Giselle may be rethinking her love of the real world.
Whilst on the Television Critics panel for Step Up: High Water, the YouTube Red series he is producing based on the Step Up films, Shankman divulged the information of where the production stands at this point and what we can expect to see if the final script is greenlit.
“We are handing in a script in a couple weeks that I’m super happy with,” Shankman said, “Then gotta get the music written.

With new exclusive behind the scenes pictures, director Kevin Lima takes us through Enchanted, as it hits its 10th birthday.
It’s been ten years since the terrific Enchanted arrived in UK cinemas, just under two months after it premiered at the London Film Festival. The film made a star of Amy Adams, brought back 2D animation from Disney to the big screen, and has a songbook that sits happily alongside the top end of Disney work. Plus, the film remains a flat out family treat.
“It has been a long time” Lima chuckled, apologising in advance if he couldn’t recall all the answers I was after. Turns out he didn’t do too badly. He spared me some time to look back over the film, the challenges of making it, and what happened next…
I’ve only just discovered that Enchanted actually had its premiere in the UK!

Director Kevin Lima tells us how DreamWorks' Monkeys Of Mumbai fell apart - and we've got some never-seen exclusive artwork.
Following his huge success with Enchanted, director Kevin Lima developed several projects, but the closest to date one of them has come to happening is the planned DreamWorks musical, Monkeys Of Mumbai.
Originally entitled Mumbai Musical, the film was announced, and DreamWorks Animation – prior to its sale to Comcast (Universal's parent company) – had invested a lot into it. And then, in 2014, the plug was pulled.
But just what happened? And how close did it come to happening?
“It came very close”, Kevin Lima told me. “We were just going into production, we were just starting animation. I’d been working on it for two and a half years. All the songs were written. Stephen Schwartz and A R Rahman. We were just ready to start”.

Since DreamWorks Animation got snapped up by Universal, it seems several films have been cancelled. So what's actually happening?
If we imagine that the acquisition of Pixar by Disney was some kind of seismic shift for the Emeryville animation house, then Dreamworks Animation, by comparison, must be living in the red-hot cradle of a hyperactive volcano.
Animated films take so long, from concept to production to release, that recent Dreamworks titles are making their eventual escape from a corporate context which bears little relation to where they were conceived.
The Croods is a particularly good example. It was, originally, going to be a stop-motion film produced at Aardman with a screenplay by John Cleese. Without it ever being cancelled outright, this project continued to evolve, as Dreamworks twisted and turned like a kaleidoscope around it, in to the final product. The plot was different. The characters were different.

From School Of Rock and Enchanted through to Hail Caesar and Moana, we look at the unmissable musical numbers from modern movies...
The world has gone gaga for La La Land and it’s not difficult to see why. We love a good musical number. Sometimes there’s nothing more uplifting than a catchy tune with some fun choreography and other times music is the best, if only, way to depict a character's despair, fear or hope. Music taps into something very primal in us all and can often extract laughter and tears easier than two hours’ worth of dialogue.
Numerous classic musicals have graced the big screen since cinema began, but the 21st century alone has seen some fantastic songs in film. Some considered ‘musical films’ and others ‘films with music’, here are my top picks for this century’s best on-screen musical sequences.

It looks like Disney will indeed give us another movie poking fun at itself all the while celebrating its animated films à la the sly parody of The Princess Bride. Things are finally moving forward on the sequel to 2007’s Enchanted. Adam Shankman is in negotiations to direct the sequel, called Disenchanted, and Amy Adams is expected to return, The Hollywood Reporter posted today. Disney hopes to start production in summer 2017. I’m disappointed to see Anne Fletcher and her comedy chops apparently off the project (Fletcher, who helmed Ryan Reynolds/Sandra Bullock rom-com The Proposal, was previously attached to direct the Enchanted sequel when it was in development back in 2010). But if Shankman delivers a movie that’s as fun and packed with dazzling musical numbers as his Hairspray, then we should be in for a solid sequel. His other credits include the Rock of Ages movie, A Walk to Remember,...

Adam Shankman, the helmer behind the musical Hairspray, is in negotiations to direct Disenchanted, the follow-up to Disney’s musically inclined 2007 fantasy Enchanted that starred Amy Adams. Adams is expected to return for the sequel, which Disney is hoping to get before cameras in summer 2017, several sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Kevin Lima directed the original movie, which tackled the idea of a prototypical Disney princess thrust into the real world, with songs and true love following. Adams starred as Giselle, who is due to marry her Prince Charming (James Marsden) when she is plucked from her
