Fall Frights: The Hills Have Eyes (2006; Film Review)

20 October 2009 12:28 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 03/03/2006

Say this for the recent trend toward remaking horror favorites from the ’70s: It’s likely that projects as unremittingly grisly and brutal as the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn Of The Dead and now The Hills Have Eyes might have had a lot more trouble getting in the studio doors were they not based on recognizable known quantities. Whatever one thinks of their overall quality, it has to be acknowledged that the Chainsaw and Dawn reduxes made honorable attempts to recapture the intensity of their forebears. But the 21st-century Hills is the first of this group to outdo its predecessor, elaborating on Wes Craven’s original in ways that both honor and improve upon it, with genuinely bloodcurdling results.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Jerry O'Connell, who can currently be seen in the thriller Obsessed, has joined the cast of Piranha 3-D, a remake of the 1978 Joe Dante-directed cult classic. The film takes place in Lake Havasu, Arizona, where a tremor causes the lake's floor to open, setting free scores of prehistoric piranhas. O'Connell joins Elisabeth Shue, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames and Richard Dreyfuss. Alexandre Aja (Mirrors, The Hills Have Eyes) is directing the project and co-wrote the script with Hills and Mirrors scribe Gregory Levasseur, Peter Goldfinger (Sorority Row) and Josh Stolberg (Good Luck Chuck). The Weinstein Company, whose previous Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over grossed $197 million worldwide, is working with 3-D specialist Neville Page (Star Trek, Avatar) to create the project's killer piscatorial creatures. You can play with the Piranha!

28 April 2009 8:19 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The Hills Have EyesAlexandre Aja is gearing up to shoot his long-awaited Piranha 3-D, the Dimension Films remake of Joe Dante’s classic, in which the maneating fish consume helpless prey during spring break at Arizona’s Lake Havasu. That means, of course, that plenty of college-age extras are needed, and the filmmakers are opening up this casting to the public.

That’s right: Fans and aspiring actors of the right age have a shot at being paid to spend two weeks in June recreating spring break on the Lake Havasu beach as part of Piranha 3-D’s shoot. Here’s the pitch the producers sent over:

“If you’re 18-25 years old, have an athletic or slim physique and are able to work in Arizona for up to two weeks in June, then you’re the bait! We are looking for crowds of attractive spring breaker types to »

Elizabeth Shue to Star in "Piranha 3-D"

13 April 2009 11:48 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Why would Elisabeth Shue sign on, let alone entertain the thought of starring in "Piranha" remake? Surely the actress wasn't enticed by the film's 3-D technology. It's probably because Shue just wants to have fun in a film role designed for mindless entertainment.

According to moviehole.net:

Shue is playing the role of Sherrif Julie Forester, a take-charge authority figure in the community of Lake Victoria - where the action/ankle-biting takes place. She's the mother of Jake (one of the central characters in the film - the shy teenager who gets to prove his worth when human-eating fish threaten his family and friends), Laura and Zane.

Oh, similar to the roles Dee Wallace used to play in the '80s :happy

By the way, the remake is going to be directed by Alexandre Aja ("Mirrors," "The Hills Have Eyes") from a script with multiple writers attached (Aja, Josh Stolberg, »

A Story So Scary They Told it Twice: What We Know About Upcoming Horror Remakes

23 March 2009 10:35 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The total number of horrendous, stupid, useless horror movie remakes could fill a film festival from Hell, but this year we’ve already seen the massively successful “Friday the 13th” and the critically lauded surprises of “My Bloody Valentine 3D” and “Last House on the Left”. Maybe there’s actually life in this horror remake trend after all and it’s not just the walking undead.

So, what’s the next “My Bloody Valentine”? Where will the next “Friday the 13th” come from? We’ve highlighted six horror movie remakes in current stages of production - from mere rumor to shooting to practically already at a theater near you - with the details about what we know so far, who’s in it, and our gut feeling on if it’s going to be a successful reboot or merely a reason to go back and rent the original. Hit rewind and take notes. »

Blu-Ray Review: Horror of ‘Mirrors’ Shatters on Closer Inspection

20 January 2009 9:38 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Mirrors” is a so-so horror movie helped a bit by its interesting director’s visual flourishes and a better-than-average ensemble but ultimately shattered by an incoherent screenplay and dialogue that is more likely to produce laughter than shivers.

Kiefer Sutherland has not yet successfully made the transition back from TV star to movie star with a series of roles in his “24” years that could be deemed questionable at best. “Phone Booth,” “Taking Lives,” “The Sentinel,” and, now, “Mirrors”. It’s not a stellar string of decisions.

In one of the featurettes on the Blu-Ray version of his latest misfire, “Reflections: The Making of Mirrors,” it is implied that Sutherland discussed doing the project with director Alexandre Aja before reading a script. He might want to change that part of his role-picking process.

Mirrors was released by Fox Home Video on January 13th, 2009.
