Irish poet and author of novels and stories dealing with the macabre and the supernatural. He was editor and proprietor of the Evening Mail in Dublin from 1839 to 1858. His story "Carmilla", featuring lesbian vampires, is probably the first story to appear in English about lesbianism. His novel "Uncle Silas" links Gothic horror to modern detective fiction.
