Well, there he is. That's Donnie Yen sporting a mustache and looking quite debonair in the role of Chen Zhen in Andrew Lau and Gordon Chan's Legend of Chen Zhen. Yes, the same Chen Zhen played by other martial art film greats Bruce Lee and Jet Li, in Fist of Fury and Fist of Legend respectfully. Quite a difference, eh? We heard they were going somewhere different with this and this is going to take some getting used to.
Andrew Lau, "So, Gordon Chan and I were discussing how to change. We noticed that the period after Chen Zhen left Jing Wu Men gives plenty of room for story development. And against the backdrop of 1925 Shanghai, we thought that Chen Zhen should be like this. It would shock everyone initially, yet after watching the whole film, you would feel that this Chen Zhen is very real, very compelling. Chen Zhen »

Production of The Legend of Chen Zhen began this week with the usual press conference launch on Sunday. Wu-jing.org has links to video on Sina [find that below] and promptly translated some of it for the rest of us who can't speak a lick of Cantonese but wish we did.
Donnie Yen will play the lead character, "I have played Chen Zhen on Fist of Fury TV series 15 years ago, so I'm particularly ambitious about this role. In terms of action, I have confidence of presenting a whole new Chen Zhen. I hope this will engender another wave of wushu trend, and hope for this to become a classic."
Excellent. We all know Yen's admiration for Bruce Lee and his previous experience with the role so we thought this film was heading in the right direction. Until...

Donnie Yen, Shu Qi and Anthony Wong have all joined the cast of Andrew Lau's new film, The Legend Of Chen Zhen, according to WuJing.org. The film is also being written and produced by Gordon Chan and Donnie Yen will provide the martial arts choreography. Chen Zhen is the same character that Jet Li played in Fist Of Legend and that Bruce Lee played in Fist Of Fury, and it seems that this will be a continuation of his story, rather than just a re-telling. Synopsis: The Legend of Chen Zhen is set 7 years after the reported death of Chen Zhen. He was showered with bullets following his vengeance on the Japanese at a dojo who are behind his mentor's death. A mysterious, wealthy entrepreneur returns from abroad and makes a grand entrance on the Shanghai social scene by befriending a notorious mafia boss. »

If you’re not psyched to see the Pang Brothers’ “The Storm Warriors” (their pseudo sequel to Wai-keung Lau’s 1998 hit “The Storm Riders”), then you just don’t appreciate crazy, overly stylized Chinese martial arts movies. Hey, it’s up to you. I personally think watching people do ridiculous kung fu moves like throwing hundreds of swords at each other and creating invisible forcefields that would make Darth Vader jealous is kinda fun. Check out two clips from the movie that have been floating around YouTube. Japanese evil warlord Lord Godless (Simon Yam) desires to conquer China and imprisons a large number of martial artists trying to make them subjugate. Among the prisoners are Cloud (Aaron Kwok) and the martial arts elder statesman Nameless (Kenny Ho). Wind (Ekin Cheng) comes to their rescue and the trio is badly wounded by Lord Godlesss evil martial arts attack. The remaining martial »

Shaw Brothers, known for innovative martial arts movies during the '60s, is coming back at a time when the Hong Kong filmmaking industry needs them.
Under a joint venture with the partially Shaw-owned Television Broadcasts Limited, the studio has four films either scheduled to be released or in production through 2010. The slate is based on a three-pronged strategy to target local audiences, mobilize local film industry workers, and to showcase Shaw Studios, a Us$180 million facility in Hong Kong’s Clearwater Bay.
Virginia Lok, production resources division controller for Television Broadcasts Limited, said a number of local filmmakers are now working abroad, and as a result, productions have decreased.
"Although a lot of Hong Kong filmmakers are now working in China, a considerable number of crews remain in Hong Kong; there weren’t enough jobs," Lok said. "Our priority is to hire Hong Kong crew and Hong Kong actors in our films. »

When writing about the new trailer for Teddy Chen’s Bodyguards And Assassins just a couple days ago I commented on how it was, frankly, a little bit underwhelming. Could this be why?
According to published reports, after clashing with producer Peter Chan, director Teddy Chen walked off set for two weeks and was replaced for that period by Andrew Lau Wai-Keung. Chan and Chen would later patch up their differences with Chen eventually returning to the helm, but this sort of conflict - particularly in the middle of photography - never bodes well.

The Storm Riders is back on DVD! Ten years on (and conveniently before the upcoming sequel is due) it’s now being re-released in a very spiffy 2 disc 10th anniversary re-mastered special edition. A true blockbuster martial arts fantasy The Storm Riders broke box office records galore on its release in 1998. Based on Ma Wing Shing's best-selling comic and directed by Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs), the film boasted some of the most cutting edge special effects ever seen in a Hong Kong film. Throw into the mix a ton of wire-fu action from young stars Ekin Cheng (Young and Dangerous) and Aaron Kwok (After This, Our Exile) and they couldn’t really go wrong. »

“Look for a Star” has pretty much everything needed for a successful romantic comedy, with megastars Andy Lau and Shu Qi in the lead roles, an experienced director at the helm in the form of Andrew Lau of “Infernal Affairs” fame, and a picturesque setting in Macau. Add to this an impressive supporting cast (not to mention a host of industry cameos) and slick production values, and it’s no surprise that the film delivers exactly as expected, and although undemanding stuff, it makes for sugar coated, feel good genre entertainment. Lau stars as Sam, the kind of nice guy billionaire who frequently populates the romantic comedy genre, who while on a business trip to Macau runs into Shu Qi’s croupier and nightclub dancer Milan. As is usually the case, she is completely unaware of his identity or his wealth, and so it comes as somewhat of a shock when she finds out, »
