One of the best running gags in "The Marvels" involves Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and the search for a perfect superhero name. Despite a fair amount of enthusiasm from Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), whose own alter ego was not-so-subtly inspired by her obsession with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica is seemingly uninterested in that particular hero perk. By the end of "The Marvels," she's still just Monica Rambeau — despite powering up in a major way, saving the universe from an errant wormhole, and ending up in an entirely new timeline.
Monica's arc across the Marvel Cinematic Universe is pretty different from her peers, but it largely works to her benefit. In the comics, Monica is a superhero who's burned through a number of superhero nicknames. She's been called Photon, Spectrum, and even Captain Marvel throughout her tenure on the page — and her ever-changing role in the comics seems to have...

Beau DeMayo’s X-Men ’97 is a treat for fans who grew up with X-Men: The Animated Series. When the children’s content turned into an adult animated show for Disney+, fans were in for an anxiety-inducing brilliantly written series. The creators also managed to cater to the Marvel fans and bring in a few cameos like Captain America and Spider-Man. But DeMayo revealed that one superhero was strictly off-limits for them to bring into the series.
X-Men ’97 featured cameos from several Marvel superheroes, but one character couldn’t be included in the series
X-Men ’97 could not feature a cameo from Deadpool, despite the X-Men character making appearances in the 90s animated series. It could probably be due to the upcoming multiversal film in the MCU featuring the character, Deadpool & Wolverine.

How would you like to spend a special Mother’s Day with your Mom? Here’s a suggestion — why not sit down for a couple of hours and watch one of these movies that’s all about mothers, both terrific and horrible? Our ranked photo gallery above includes many fine suggestions, all of which feature an Oscar-winning performance by an actress who plays a mother where that role was pivotal to the plot.
Though there are thousands of films in which one character happens to be a mother, you won’t find them all on this list. Besides the fact that these 18 films contain a maternal performance that won an Academy Award, they show a wide array of what it means to be a mother. Godzilla Minus One proved that even with a limited budget, one can produce an award-winning and top-quality film. Unfortunately, the movie also had a limited theatrical run in selected countries which was quite disappointing to many fans.

Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t what it used to be anymore. From failing movies to cringe scenes (just look at Thor: Love and Thunder), the MCU is suffering through the effects of post-Endgame clarity.
Disney’s current CEO, Bob Iger, recently unveiled a new plan for the Marvel Cinematic Universe which seems good (at first). However, it is the majority opinion of the people that this new plan isn’t going to work.

Maybe it is a bold statement, or a rude one, but all things considered, there is quite a noticeable difference observed in the MCU before Avengers: Endgame and the MCU today. Elle Fanning is best known for portraying Sleeping Beauty in the 2014 film Maleficent and its 2019 sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. So, I am unsurprised that she chose to channel her iconic character, Aurora, on the red carpet at the 2024 Met Gala.
On Monday, May 6, Elle Fanning was among the many celebrities who attended the event, which raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and celebrates the Costume Institute’s annual exhibits.

The dress code for the night was “The Garden of Time,” inspired by the art museum’s new exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” And I think the 26-year-old American actress captured the theme flawlessly, exuding romance and fantasy with her attire.

Amidst a flurry of floral frocks adorning the red carpet, Kaia Gerber took a bold departure, opting for a sleek and sophisticated ensemble as she attended the 2024 Met Gala on Monday, May 6, in New York City.
Among the stars gracing the glitzy affair were A-list celebrities such as Zendaya, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Brie Larson, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and many more, each adding their unique flair to the night’s festivities.
Inspired by this year’s Costume Institute theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” Kaia made her mark on the Metropolitan Museum of Art steps with an elegant attire that some might argue deviated from the event’s “Garden of Time” dress code.

The Met Gala isn’t just about the star-studded guest list; it’s a celebration of haute couture and a theme that captivates all.

The Marvels Box Office: Becomes The Biggest Failure Of 2023; Decoding Its Numbers. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Marvel Cinematic Universe, aka the MCU, has been struggling at the box office for the past few years, especially after Avengers: Endgame. The Marvel Studios is one of the highest-grossing studios, but last year, it had very poor box office results due to The Marvel’s overall collections. It has suffered a loss with a massive margin. Keep scrolling to get all the deets.
The MCU movie featured Brie Larson once again as Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers. Besides Larson, the movie had Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, aka Ms Marvel, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau. Samuel L Jackson also returned as Nick Fury. South Korean actor Park Seo-Joon made his Hollywood debut with this Marvel flick, but that too could not save the MCU movie’s sinking ship.

Disney normally finds itself at the top of the box office rankings, thanks to its ownership of well-known franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, but last year was an exception. Recently, Deadline claimed that Disney was involved in four of the top five box office bombs of 2023. The company had numerous setbacks that caused its fortunes to plummet. However, The Marvels was one of the most surprising misfires.
The Marvels
Who could have predicted that Brie Larson’s last MCU outing would end in a financial letdown, causing more of a tremor than even the Dceu’s The Flash?
Yes, you read that right. As unbelievable as it may seem, Nia DaCosta’s flick endured a staggering net loss of $237 million, outdoing the Ezra Miller starrer. Speaking about the latter, it even sprinted away from the spotlight with a $155 million shortfall.

With major franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar under its roof, Disney typically finds itself on the top of the box-office heap, but that wasn’t the case last year. The company had more than a few failures which found its fortunes falling, and Deadline reports that four of the five biggest box-office bombs of 2023 belonged to Disney.
First up, and least surprising, is The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris. As its predecessor grossed $1.1 billion, it was hoped that the sequel would equal that number, but the film turned out to be a bomb of epic proportions, grossing just $206 million worldwide. The film reportedly found Disney taking a loss of $237 million. Yikes.

2023 wasn’t that great for Disney. It was the first year in recent times that the franchise did not have a billion-dollar movie, and it was marked by the failure of most Marvel Studio projects.
‘The Marvels’ was released in November 2023, and while it was expected that it wouldn’t surpass or come close to the original box office success of ‘Captain Marvel,’ no one could anticipate that it would lose a staggering amount of money.
‘The Marvels’ is currently the lowest-grossing MCU movie so far, and it’s also the first MCU movie not to cross the $100 million threshold at the domestic box office. Recent report made by Deadline revealed just how much money the studio lost on the latest Captain Marvel movie.
Here’s the summary:
Box Office: The film earned $84.5 million domestically and $121.6 million internationally, totaling $206.1 million worldwide. Revenues: The movie generated $88.0 million from theatrical releases, $40.0 million from home entertainment,...

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently suffering severely, and its recent box office bombs justify just how much on the edge of the cliff it is. If anything, except for a few, there have hardly been any perfect movies from the saga after Avengers: Endgame, which itself was released nearly half a decade ago. This is why many seemingly termed this problem as being “superhero fatigue.”

The X-Men have finally come back home to the MCU after the acquisition of Fox Studios by Disney. The characters will be making their official MCU debut with the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine, which sees Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and a whole bunch of other actors crossing over to the franchise.
The MCU has also reportedly begun work on making an X-Men film. An industry insider recently reported that the studio was looking for writers who could balance comedy and drama. The report also mentioned that the new films would focus more on the female mutants. While previous female-centered Marvel films have not worked for the franchise, it might just be the best foot forward with the X-Men.

Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting more female-led superhero flicks to highlight the powerful women of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a world where male superheroes predominate. However, recent reports have suggested that the future of such projects could very well be at risk, making fans frustrated and disappointed.

Marvel has been through a lot of ups and downs post-Endgame. After a series of bombs at the box office, things are finally looking hopeful for the comic book giant after taking a back-to-basics approach. Bringing back the beloved X-Men cartoon from the 1990s was a slick move, as it brought back a lot of fans who had lost faith after consecutive failures like The Marvels and She-Hulk.

Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau was slated to get her own solo MCU series if it was not for the disappointing reception of Brie Larson’s The Marvels. The character officially debuted in Disney+’s WandaVision, though her first brief appearance was in 2019’s Captain Marvel as a young Monica.

Daisy Ridley shot to fame as the leading protagonist Rey in Star Wars’ sequel trilogy. She shared screen space with newcomers Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, and John Boyega, as well as Star Wars veterans such as Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford in the films. The films were divisive in their responses, with creator George Lucas himself not being a fan.
After Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which ended Rey’s arc, Ridley has been keeping busy with other projects and has also begun a career as an executive producer. However, she will be returning as Rey in an upcoming Star Wars film. Ridley mentioned that she almost manifested a Rey-centered film right before meeting with LucasFilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy.

The Apple TV+ limited series “Lessons in Chemistry” tells the story of Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson), a brilliant chemist struggling against the blatant sexism of the 1950s science community before taking her skills and empowering women over the airwaves through a science-driven cooking show. But how did the artists behind the scenes transport us to the era? We spoke with editor Geraud Brisson, hair department head Teressa Hill, cinematographer Jason Oldak, composer Carlos Rafael Rivera, supervising sound editor Perry Robertson, and production designer Cat Smith for a special “Making Of” panel. Watch our entire discussion above.
SEEEmmys spotlight: Lewis Pullman scores top marks in ‘Lessons in Chemistry’
For Hill, “the shapes that we create on set” with the hairstyles “actually help to tell the story.” She explains, “You have to research the economic status of a character. You have to take into consideration the storyline as well. Like with Elizabeth Zott,...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the packed limited series race, which has seen three new contenders premiere in the last three weeks.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back to what is arguably the most competitive Emmys category this year: limited series. It feels like as good a time as any to return to my favorite race – particularly with “Shōgun” and Anna Sawai dominating the discourse, as well as the premiere of our dark horse favorite “Under the Bridge.” We talked about both shows this week with our voices, and I must say, it feels heartening — dare I type, Siri pay “Vindicated” – to have been so right about “Shōgun.” We both loved that show way back in February and the response has been off the charts.

Will “Under the Bridge” go over big with voters? Did Anna Sawai just lock up the Emmy? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss Hulu’s new limited series, the penultimate episode of “Shōgun” and more.
Based on Rebecca Godfrey‘s book of the same name, “Under the Bridge,” which premiered with two episodes on Wednesday, tells the true story of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old who was assaulted by a group of teens, mostly girls, and then murdered in a small town in British Columbia, Canada, in 1997. Riley Keough plays Godfrey, who died of lung cancer in 2022, a week after the show was announced, and Lily Gladstone plays a detective. Both are campaigning in supporting, which on the surface seems like category fraud, but we explain why this is the correct placement for both and how the teen cast members — which includes Chloe Guidry,...

The Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, also known as “the Oscars of Science,” is an awards show unlike any other.
Founded and funded by Silicon Valley titan Yuri Milner and his artist wife Julia Milner, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative co-founder Priscilla Chan, the Breakthrough Prize recognizes “scientists changing the world” with award statuettes and sizable cash prizes. And on Saturday night, at the ceremony’s 10th edition — the second in a row held on the roof of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, with the Hollywood Hills glistening in the background — presenters, performers and audience members included a collection of A-listers that could give the Oscars a run for their money.
One could turn left and spot Bill Gates and Robert Downey Jr. sitting at the same table, or right and find tablemates Bradley Cooper and Rupert Murdoch schmoozing.

While Superhero-fatigue was not at its peak, several movies from both superhero brands— Marvel and DC Studios, enjoyed the heydays at the box office. Amid that, stand-alone female-led movies have also seen astonishing success.
Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman
Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot, in particular, was the perfect example of the rise of female-led superhero flicks as the 2017 movie went on to be a critical darling with a stunning box-office performance. Fox’s X-Men movie series based on the Marvel characters also enjoyed a mild buzz for a female-led movie with Dafne Keen but it did not see the light of day as of yet.
Dafne Keen’s X-23 Spin-off Was Inches Away From Reality Dafne Keen in Logan

Nia DaCosta is in talks to direct the second part of the upcoming “28 Years Later” trilogy from Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.
Previously, she directed and co-wrote “The Marvels” starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, and “Candyman,” a contemporary spiritual sequel of the 1992 cult horror classic of the same name for Universal and Monkeypaw Productions.
“Candyman” opened to No. 1 at the box office, making DaCosta the first Black female director to open at the top of U.S. box office charts. DaCosta made her feature debut with the critically acclaimed “Little Woods,” which she wrote and directed.
When DaCosta sat down with Variety last fall to discuss “The Marvels,” she was proud of checking “direct an MCU” movie off her directors bucket list and looking forward to what came next.
“I did these three films back-to-back,” DaCosta said, referencing “Little Woods,” “Candyman” and “The Marvels.” “They were...

Exclusive: While Danny Boyle is set to return to direct 28 Years Later, the first film in a new trilogy based on the iconic horror films he helped launch, Sony Pictures is already lining up the helmer for the second installment. While a deal hasn’t closed, sources tell Deadline that Nia DaCosta is in talks to direct, with Boyle, original writer Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice producing along with Bernie Bellew. 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy will exec produce.
While exact dates are unknown, sources say the plan is for Boyle to direct the first film later this year, with the second film shooting immediately after, which is why Sony is moving fast to lock in that second director. This way, the directors can get on the same page about where they see the story going while also bringing their own unique visions for each film. Garland will pen each installment.

Having trouble predicting what will win Best Limited Series at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they are divided between five different programs: FX’s “Shogun,” FX’s “Fargo,” HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” HBO’s “The Regime” and Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry.”
As of this writing, a leading four out of our 11 Emmy Experts predict a victory for “Shogun”: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety) and Joyce Eng (Gold Derby). The big-budget Japanese historical drama is based on James Clavell‘s 1975 novel, which was previously adapted into NBC’s three-time Emmy-winning 1980 miniseries. Cast members include Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai and Fumi Nikaido.
Two of our Emmyologists — Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) — instead believe “Fargo” will prevail.
