Toronto -- Quebec's Christal Films said Tuesday that it will return to movie distribution after working through bankruptcy protection, this time in partnership with E1 Entertainment.
Christal founder Christian Larouche, who already has a first-look deal with E1 Entertainment, will resurrect Christal Films as a subsidiary of the indie studio.
Larouche previously had a movie releasing partnership with Toronto-based Maple Pictures, which handles Lionsgate product in Canada.
Christal Films will acquire and distribute films from Canada and Europe mainly for the French-speaking Quebec market.
The move aims to enlarge E1 Entertainment's share of the Quebec distribution market against Alliance Films, Canada's largest indie distributor, which runs Alliance Vivafilm in Quebec.
The first Christal Films title to open in Quebec is "A vos marques ... Party 2" by Frederik D'Amour. It hits theaters June 16.

Toronto -- Christal Films, the production shingle of veteran Quebec movie producer Christian Larouche, on Monday inked a deal that will see E1 Entertainment distribute its movies in Canada and internationally.
The first film from the multiyear agreement will be Frederik D'Amour's "A vos marques ... Party 2," which is set for a June theatrical release.
Also in the Christal pipeline is Sophie Lorain's "Les Grandes chaleurs," Sylvain Guy's "Leo Huff, and another Frederik D'Amour picture, "Noemie," slated for a December release.
The supply deal with E1 Entertainment comes after Larouche encountered difficulty with longtime distribution arm Christal Films Distribution after it severed ties with domestic partners Lionsgate and Maple Pictures.

TORONTO -- Christal Films Distribution, a movie releasing partnership between Montreal's Christal Films, Lionsgate and Maple Pictures, has secured bankruptcy protection under Canada's Creditors Arrangement Act.
Montreal-based Christal Films Distribution said it received creditor protection from the Quebec Superior Court, which gave the distributor 30 days to restructure its affairs.
The move follows Toronto-based Maple Pictures, which handles Lionsgate product in Canada, last year ending its distribution pact with Christian Larouche, the veteran Quebec producer who runs Montreal-based Christal Films Production.
When Maple Pictures shifted its own and Lionsgate titles to rival Quebec distributor Seville Pictures, Christal Films Distribution lost much of its bank financing as Lionsgate titles stopped coming its way.
Christal Films Distribution said its financial difficulties do not affect Christal Films Production.
The shifting Canadian movie distribution sector has also seen the closing of the Toronto office at ThinkFilm as its back-room operations are shifted to Los Angeles by parent Capital Films.
Also, Alliance Films is close to signing a deal to release Relativity Media titles in Canada as the country's largest indie movie distributor attempts to pivot away from long-standing output deals with New Line Cinema and Miramax that it is set to lose.

TORONTO -- Quebec film distributor Christal Films on Thursday said it will begin handling the releases of its films in English-speaking Canada as of June 1, following the dissolution of its six year-old joint venture with rivals Lionsgate Films and Maple Pictures.
"My company has reached a stage of maturity and acquired a strong reputation that can only serve as a springboard for us to become completely independent," Christal Films president Christian Larouche said of the decision to go it alone nationwide.
After opening a Toronto office one year ago with Joanne Senecal as vp of distribution, Christal Films found success releasing the documentary "March of the Penguins" and Ken Loach's "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" on its own outside Quebec.
After May 31, Christal Films will release its own film and video slate, and make all TV sales, outside of Quebec.
Domestic distributors have traditionally focused on either the country's French-speaking market in Quebec, or the English-language market in the rest of Canada.

TORONTO -- Quebec film distributor Christal Films on Tuesday said it has picked up the controversial U.S. teen killer film Karla for a Canada-wide release on Jan. 20. Christian Larouche, president of Montreal-based Christal, said he plans to release about 100 prints of Karla, a drama from Los Angeles-based Quantum Entertainment that stars Laura Prepon (That '70s Show) and Misha Collins as convicted schoolgirl killers Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo. The duo terrorized a southern Ontario community during the early 1990s. The Montreal World Film Festival last August decided against giving Karla a world premiere as its opening night film after facing widespread opposition from festival sponsors. A spokeswoman for Cineplex Galaxy Cinemas, the Canadian exhibition giant, said Karla will screen on about 15 of its screens in major markets, including Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City and Halifax. "We feel that our role as a film exhibitor is to make films available to the community and to let people decide if they want to see a film or not," she said.
