There's only one direction [the Canadian film industry] can go in, and that is with film-makers who have powerful visions. There's a handful of them in Canada. They tend to make dark movies, movies that are counter-Hollywood and anti-television. I'd be thrilled if one of our luminary directors came to me and said: "There's this life-affirming book where good triumphs over evil, a story of human kindness, and I'd like to make it my next movie." Those calls rarely come.
