This year marks the 45th anniversary of Don Coscarelli’s horror classic Phantasm, and Coscarelli returns to that iconic universe with his brand new book Phiction: Tales from the World of Phantasm. Phiction explores characters and stories from the Phantasm universe, with an introduction by best-selling author Joe R. Lansdale (Bubba Ho-Tep).
In the wake of a hardcover limited edition version of Phiction being put up for grabs at a special event back in March, the paperback version of the book is now available.
You can grab your paperback copy from Amazon today!
Coscarelli notes within the pages of the book that his days of directing Phantasm movies are behind him, but Phiction is without question the next best thing. What you’re getting here are Six brand new stories written by Coscarelli himself, each of them expanding upon characters from the movies. For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit Showtime’s “Masters of Horror,” which was created by Mick Garris and aired for two seasons between 2005 and 2007.
It seemed like a horror fan’s wet dream: a horror anthology series with some of the greatest horror filmmakers of all time lensing short format horror films for premium cable. Although horror icons had teamed in the past to bring us series like “Tales from the Darkside” and “Tales from the Crypt,” there wasn’t a modern series that brought them all together to have a chance to tell their stories in the anthology format. “Masters of Horror” seemed like a prime opportunity to re-invent the waning anthology horror format, and while it didn’t quite re-invent the wheel as planned, it brought with it a lot of great content from some bonafide horror icons.

45 years ago, writer/director Don Coscarelli delivered one of the best horror films ever made: Phantasm, and film which spawned three sequels that Coscarelli wrote and directed himself, then a fourth that he wrote with director David Hartman. Now, to celebrate the original film’s 45th anniversary, Coscarelli is expanding the franchise – not with another movie, but with a book called Phiction: Tales from the World of Phantasm. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting report that Molotov Press will be publishing this “new limited collector print edition of original stories written by Don Coscarelli, the creator of the Phantasm films.” “The book will be released on the 45th Anniversary of the 1979 film with a celebration event and signing at Dark Delicacies in Burbank, CA on Saturday, March 23rd at 2Pm.”

My to-be-read pile is shamefully big, but that never stops me from adding more. I cherish getting lost in a good book, but a novel is more of a commitment than chipping away at movies on my to-watch list. The conspicuously titled 101 Horror Books to Read Before You’re Murdered may make that stack of books to read even more intimidating, but it also helps narrow down which tales of terror are worthy of being moved to the top.
Following a foreword by Bird Box author Josh Malerman, writer Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann explains why you should trust her choices implicitly. As the owner of the horror fiction subscription service Night Worms and the editor-in-chief of publisher Dark Hart Books, she’s an unassailable authority on horror literature — even if she’s a self-proclaimed scaredy cat who rarely watches genre movies.

After grilling him about Bruce-o-Rama and his publishing ambitions, Bruce Campbell graciously discussed Evil Dead Rise and more with me. He seems genuinely proud of the latest installment in the Evil Dead saga, on which he serves as executive producer alongside Sam Raimi, with Rob Tapert producing. Written and directed by Lee Cronin, it hits theaters on April 21.
“Lee Cronin did a really bang-up job. You can expect to be very disturbed. It’s when mommies go bad. We dragged it out of the woods. We’re in an urban environment, which gives it a really gnarly feel. I think people are in for trouble. I feel sorry for audiences in advance!”
Campbell compares Evil Dead Rise‘s tone to that of Fede Álvarez’s 2013 Evil Dead reboot. “Both filmmakers are equally capable individuals, so they both really just spanked it. It’s not a yuk-fest. It’s not hardy-har-har.

Netflix has quite a few new movies and television shows joining its ranks this March. Some of these are exclusives or originals, such as the second season of "Shadow and Bone," while others like the "Riddick" trilogy are being acquired through licensing agreements. Needless to say, if you are subscribed to Netflix, the chances that you'll find something intriguing to watch that month are high.
Of course, when new programs are added, some have to leave. Netflix is certainly no stranger to having big-name titles come and go from their service, although the vast majority of its originals have retained their place. However, March will likely be the month where that exclusivity is tested. There aren't too many titles leaving Netflix that month, but the ones that are could set the stage for how the platform filters its so-called "content" moving forward. In the meantime, here are some of the...

Elvis has a lot of buzz this awards season, but Baz Luhrmann didn’t get the story right. The real Elvis Presley traded places with an impersonator in order to live a simple life as an impersonator himself before retiring to Mud Creek, Texas alongside John F. Kennedy, who was patched up and dyed Black after the assassination attempt.
Those are the facts according to Bubba Ho-Tep, at least.
The 2002 horror-comedy is based on the short story of the same name by Joe R. When cult filmmaker Don Coscarelli approached Lansdale about optioning the story for a film, the author tried to talk him out of it, as he believed it couldn’t be made.

There seems to be a decent-sized, and maybe still-growing, sub-genre of graphic novel biographies out there in the world. I’ve been away from that end of publishing for a while now, so I can’t speak authoritatively to the reasons why, but my cynical side thinks they’re aimed at the middle-grade need-to-do-a-report crowd, the modern equivalent of heavily illustrated “junior biographies” from my day.
But maybe there’s a serious adult market for comics biographies of random people – who knows? The world is big and full of unlikely things. I’m definitely seeing more of them, for whatever reasons.

Days before a Targaryen civil war erupts between Rhaenyra and Alicent on the Season 1 finale of HBO’s House of the Dragon, you’ll find series creator George R.R. Martin staying mum on fire-breathing animals and talking up his latest rotoscope animated short, Night of the Cooters, in his Santa Fe, Nm stomping ground.
The Vincent D’Onofrio-directed cowboys vs. aliens film based on the Howard Waldrop short story is one of four short movies Martin is producing in what is shaping up to be an anthology either for the big screen (a la Creepshow) or TV.
Night of the Cooters follows a crusty Texas sheriff, played by D’Onofrio, who musters up his townspeople to take on an invading UFO. The pic played last night at the Martin-owned Jean Cocteau Cinema, where the Game of Thrones architect sat for a Q&a as part...

The Santa Fe International Film Festival is set to screen Night of the Cooters, the short film produced by George R.R. Martin and directed by Vincent D’Onofrio. Martin and D’Onofrio will attend the event for a Q&a scheduled for Wednesday, October 19 at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.
“We wrapped principal photography on Night of the Cooters back in August, you may recall,” he said in a statement. “That’s our adaptation of the classic short story by the one and only Howard Waldrop. Shot entirely in greenscreen in Santa Fe, from a screenplay by Joe Lansdale. Directed by Vincent d’Onofrio, who also starred. After that, we turned it over to the wizards at Trioscope, who have been busily working on it ever since with their groundbreaking animation process.”

The follow-up to Classic Monsters Unleashed, Shakespeare Unleashed is a horror anthology that features new, original stories from Joe R. Lansdale, Ian Doescher, Seanan McGuire, Cullen Bunn, Jonathan Maberry, and more! Now on Kickstarter, I caught up with editor James Aquilone to talk about the origins of this unique horror project, working with this talented group of creators, and future plans!
Following the success and release of Classic Monsters Unleashed, what inspired you to reimagine Shakespeare’s works as short horror stories (and sonnets) in Shakespeare Unleashed?
The success of Classic Monsters Unleashed caught me by surprise. I had thought of it as a one-off, but then people kept asking me if I was going to do another book. So I started thinking what an Unleashed series would be and what other literary or fictional universes we could delve into. In Season 3 of “Community,” the study group takes a class from biology professor Dr. Marshall Kane, played by Michael K. Williams. Prof. Kane is an ex-con who earned his degree while in prison.
In other words, Kane has seen some things. But nothing prepared him for the baffling changes in the world when he got out. Specifically, “as someone who just spent the majority of his life in prison, what happened with Legos? They used to be simple. Something happened out here while I was inside. Harry Potter Legos, Star Wars Legos. Complicated kits, tiny little blocks. I’m not saying it’s bad, I just wanted to know what happened.”
Prof. Kane is honestly baffled and looking for an answer. And Williams plays this scene with complete sincerity — which is where the hilarity lies. Because the idea is absurd, but he’s absolutely right. Legos have changed.

As an aside, the Dalton Gang was a real group of train robbers, who operated in Kansas. Anyone expecting to see, let alone hear about, a “pale door” in Austin-based filmmaker Aaron B. Koontz’s (Camera Obscura) horror-western, The Pale Door, will be sorely disappointed. Co-writer and director Koontz lifted the title for his film from Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, “The Haunted Palace.” And with respected horror-western writer Joe R. Lansdale executive producing and Lansdale’s son, Keith, on co-scriptwriting duties, it’s not unreasonable to expect we’re about to see and hear something a cut about the usual, straight-to-streaming or straight-to-vod fare. Unfortunately, The Pale Door doesn’t rise to even the most minimal of expectations. Whether hamstrung by a limited budget, a lack of imagination or creativity, or both, The Pale Door fails to deliver anything...

Like a bag of candy that looks good, tastes great, and somehow also improves your mental health, Joe R. Lansdale writes words good. He spins tales that captivate and surprise, whatever their length and form, so it's no wonder that his works served as the source material for great genre screen adaptations, from Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) to Coscarell's Incident On and Off a Mountain Road (2005) to Jim Mickle's Cold in July (2014) to the wonderful series Hap and Leonard. “Hallowed be thy name, oh Lord, and shotgun do your stuff,” wrote Joe R. Lansdale in one of his more than 50 novels, 400 short stories, and countless comic books and screenplays. But while a prolific storyteller, Lansdale is no ordinary writer. He’s the kind of guy who when tasked with writing a sequel to The Drive-In, he subtitled it Not Just One of Them Sequels. He knew you couldn’t skin a rabbit and keep it as a pet. The Texas native also inspired a generation of suspense writers, and the immersive and obsessive documentary on the author, All Hail the Popcorn King, has been touring the country and will be released wider over the coming months.
By the same token, Hansi Oppenheimer is not just any documentary filmmaker. She put the grr in fangrrl. Her upcoming All Hail the Popcorn King promises to be a “five-star” documentary on the award-winning author and screenwriter.

Shudder has today announced that it has commissioned scripts for a full third season of Creepshow, showrun and executive produced by Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead) and based on George A. Romero’s iconic 1982 movie. The anthology series shattered all Shudder records when it debuted last October, and its first season has just concluded a successful run on AMC.
The second season was set to commence shooting in March in Atlanta, Georgia, but has been on hold until film and television production resumes. Says showrunner Greg Nicotero:
Creepshow continues to be near and dear to my heart and having the opportunity to continue the legacy by developing season 3 gives me the chance to work with some of the best storytellers and artists in the business. The stories we have in the pipeline for season 2 are even more outrageous, more fun and capture the spirit of what George Romero and Stephen King started in the ‘80s.

We here at Den of Geek were big fans of the Hap and Leonard TV series, sadly canceled by Sundance in 2018 after three glorious seasons. But the world and its characters live on in the book series that started it all. Joe R. Lansdale’s story of two martial arts-wielding detectives who strike up an unlikely best friendship as they work as private investigators n 1980s East Texas is filled with some good crime plotting and some interesting things to say about America, with two fascinating characters at its center. Consisting of twelve novels, four novellas, and three collections of stories and excerpts, if you’re looking for a new literary universe to dive into, this could be it.

The success of Shudder’s Creepshow — the horror anthology series based on Stephen King and George A. Romero’s 1982 cinematic homage to EC Comics — led to the genre streaming outlet quickly greenlighting a second six-episode season. As showrunner/director/writer Greg Nicotero tells it, cameras were literally about to start rolling on that second season when the deadly coronavirus pandemic roared around the world, shutting down not just most daily life but all film and TV production for the immediate future.
“I mean, we were one day away from shooting Creepshow season 2 when the big pause button got pushed,” says Nicotero on the phone from his home, where he remains like so many of us in lockdown. “So we were ready to go. We’re just waiting for the word to get back out in the world again.”
In one sense, however, Nicotero is glad that the shutdown occurred before production actually got started.

We’re all trying to find ways to keep ourselves and/or our families/housemates engaged and entertained during this period of social distancing. Might I suggest a bit of horror?
Tor Books launched its own horror imprint, Nightfire Books, aimed at publishing fiction that “unsettles and delights, exploring the full range of horror, dark fantasy, and the supernatural” back in April. The imprint’s first publication is planned for early 2021, but that doesn’t mean it’s not putting out some chilling content in the meantime.
In February, Nightfire Books launched Come Join Us By the Fire, an audio-only anthology of 35 horror short stories available to listen to for free. The collection offers almost 10 hours of creepy content, is narrated by Gerard Doyle, Ramon de Ocampo, and Saskia Maarleveld, and includes some of our favorite authors, including Joe R. Lansdale, Paul Tremblay, Sam J. Miller, China Miéville, and Carmen Maria Machado.

Shudder original Creepshow is set to get a linear debut on AMC ahead of the digital launch of its second season.
The move is the latest example of AMC Networks moving its content “fluidly” between its portfolio of linear channels and digital services. Last year, it aired supernatural horror drama NOS4A2 on AMC before putting it on Shudder for a second run. Creepshow will air on AMC later this year.
“There’s absolute crossover between the brand and the content on some of our linear channels and Ott services,” COO Ed Carroll, speaking on its investor call following its financials, said. “We think that [Creepshow] will be successful on AMC but will also then build audiences for the season two launch back on Shudder.”

After a successful run exclusively on Google Play, Come Join Us By the Fire is now available on Spotify as well as other audiobook retailers. Also in today's Horror Highlights: Kickstarter campaigns for graphic novels Von Bach by Owen Hammer and The Empties by Kristen Gorlitz.
Von Bach's Kickstarter Campaign Details: "'Von Bach” is a graphic novel adaptation of a play produced by the Next Arena Theater company. It’s the story of an undead monster who sues a movie studio trying to make a horror movie about him.
Doctor Heinrich Von Bach was a nineteenth-century scientist resurrected from the dead by his own ungodly invention. At least that’s the story Hollywood told when they got hold of the gothic romance novel written about the good doctor. For a hundred years they’ve made as many films based on the bloody life and undeath of Von Bach.
