We’ve seen “Queer Eye” make over all types of heroes over the years — from ranchers to gay pastors. But we’ve never seen anything like what Season 7 is promising. In Netflix’s first trailer for the new season, which premieres on May 12, the Fab Five are going to be helping the brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha.
“That’s right, we’re doing a frat house,” Bobby Berk says in the trailer.
It isn’t long before those cheery quips become screams of horror as the five enter this mold and fly-covered party house. It’s all part of Berk, Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown and Tan France’s new season in New Orleans. But it’s not going to be all sequins and Mardi Gras masks. In the tear-filled trailer, the team asks their heroes to confront everything from toxic masculinity to their own internalized homophobia.

A version of this story about “Queer Eye” creator David Collins first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Since debuting on Netflix in 2018, “Queer Eye” has won the Emmy for Outstanding Structured Reality Series four times in a row. Now the show — in which the Fab Five travel the country helping people with grooming, fashion, cooking, home decor and life coaching — could make Emmy history. If “Queer Eye” wins this year for Season 6, it will set a new record for the most consecutive triumphs in that category, breaking its current tie with ABC’s “Shark Tank.”
For David Collins, who created the “make better” reality series with his company, Scout Productions, the milestone is “nothing short of mind-blowing.”
“This little gay boy from Cincinnati, Ohio, in a million years, never thought that this was possible,” he said, gesturing to himself. “I grew...

As the national conversation changed dramatically in the past four years, centering the importance of amplifying underrepresented voices and cultures, it altered the context of pop culture, as well. Many unscripted programs rose to the challenge by continuously casting more inclusively — whether it be a particular season’s contestants, episode-specific subjects or series-long hosts. Through these players, the shows are able to shine an international spotlight on the immigrant experience, racial divides, prejudices and concerns of the Lgbtqia+ community.
“From the beginning it was of the utmost importance to us to show the diversity within this country and in small towns,” says Johnnie Ingram, executive producer of HBO’s “We’re Here.”
The series, which nabbed a coveted unstructured reality program Emmy nom for its first season this year, follows three drag queens — DJ “Shangela” Pierce, Eureka O’Hara and Bob the Drag Queen — as they seek out the local Lgbtqia+ community and allies,...

“We are so happy about it!” admits showrunner Jennifer Lane about the success that her show “Queer Eye” has had at the Emmys. Watch the full interview with Lane above. Her team has won the Emmy for Best Structured Reality Program the last two years in a row (2018-2019). This year, among its seven nominations across the board is another chance to defend its title in the top category and a first-ever nomination in the Best Reality Host category for the “Fab Five,” made up of experts Bobby Berk (design), Karamo Brown (culture and lifestyle), Tan France (fashion), Antoni Porowski (food and wine) and Jonathan Van Ness (grooming).
When asked which of the two wins to date is her favorite, Lane jokes, “well which is your best kiss when you’re a teenager? I think it’s your first kiss. I mean, you might get better at it,” she smiles.

Over the last couple of years, executive producers Jennifer Lane and Michael Williams have had their hands full. Working on two new seasons of Queer Eye, as well as a four-episode international season, Queer Eye: We’re in Japan!, the pair have always had an eye toward exciting locations and people with fresh perspectives that the show can celebrate.
Created by David Collins of Scout Productions, the Emmy-winning pop culture phenomenon centers on The Fab Five, a group of “make better” experts that travels from city to city, to shed a light on heroes within various communities, and help them improve upon their already extraordinary lives, by offering insights on grooming, design, culture and lifestyle, fashion, food and wine.
Filming in Kansas City, Missouri and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania between Seasons 3 and 5, with an Austin, Texas-based sixth season on the way, Lane and Williams have had their own mission with Queer Eye, not unlike the Fab Five,...

“The look of the show is always aimed to be authentic, so if anything feels off or produced, it just doesn’t have a place,” Hisham Abed tells Gold Derby in his exclusive interview (watch the video above) about directing the “Queer Eye” reboot. He notes that what surprised him about the show was “how quickly a simple conversation can get so deep and so real and so heartfelt and that any one of the Fab Five is capable of doing that” and “how beautifully emotional the stories that we tell can be.” Abed explains about how shooting handheld fosters this environment, “The handheld energy is something that underscores that authenticity and it helps us move quickly and silently and we’re less encumbered by things like a tripod or a dolly that you might have on a scripted show or even some competition shows.”

This story about “Queer Eye” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
When rebooted “Queer Eye” was first getting off the ground at Netflix, showrunner Jennifer Lane knew it was going to live or die on its cast. The new Fab Five — the five gay men who would serve as personal lifestyle advisers and spiritual guides — would not only have to live up to the cast of the original cult-favorite Bravo series, they’d also have to stand on their own.
“We were almost overly cautious,” Lane said. “It was really important to us that our Fab Five remember the original Fab Five and be excited to take their place. But we knew the whole time we had something special with these guys.”
