Disney’s “Space Mountain” has been reignited.
Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, whose credits including “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and the two Michael Bay-produced live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” films, have been hired to write a new screenplay based on the beloved Disney Parks attraction, TheWrap has learned.
Jonathan Eirich from Rideback is producing the feature, along with Joby Harold (who wrote an earlier iteration of the project) and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse. Ryan Halprin of Rideback is executive producing.
The original Space Mountain opened as the centerpiece of the Magic Kingdom’s version of Tomorrowland in 1975, part of the expansive Walt Disney World resort outside of Orlando, Fla. The ride is known for its strikingly graphic design — comprised of a cone and spires that jut heavenward (and can be seen as part of John Hench’s early concept art) — and its thrilling, coaster-in-the-dark aesthetic. Disney is once again trying to make a "Space Mountain" movie happen. This is one of the company's most cherished theme park rides as a staple of both Disneyland and Disney World for decades. Now, a pair of new writers have been brought on board to try and crack the code with this long-gestating adaptation. Whether or not they will be the ones to get it across the finish line is another question entirely.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec have been tapped to write the latest iteration of "Space Mountain" for Disney. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being. Applebaum and Nemec are known for their work on Amazon's wildly expensive series "Citadel," as well as Netflix's live-action "Cowboy Bebop" series, which was canceled after just one season. Jonathan Eirich is on board to produce the film alongside Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell,...

Anime and manga live-action adaptations, especially English-language ones, have a mixed track record. For every "One Piece" and "Speed Racer," which manage to capture the endless imagination of the medium, there are thrice as many "Dragonball Evolution" and "Ghost in the Shell" bad movies that nearly ruin their source material.
One of the best ones is not really based on an anime or manga — though it is quite clear that "Akira" was a huge influence — Josh Trank and Max Landis' "Chronicle." The film is set in Seattle and follows three teens who acquire telekinetic powers. Soon enough, the fun and games turn dark and deadly when one of them begins to lose control and relish in their power. Aside from very direct visual references to Katsuhiro Otomo's iconic (and very influential) anime masterpiece, "Chronicle" manages to capture the quick and chaotic descent into madness and horror that plagues the...

Fantastic Fest has yet again served up a fresh feast of films, with Ralph Fiennes starring in "The Menu" and winning over audiences across the board. Directed by Mark Mylod from a script by Will Tracy and Seth Reiss, "The Menu" sees Fiennes as Chef Slowik, a renowned culinary maestro who has invited a dozen disgustingly wealthy customers to a private island to enjoy an ultra-exclusive dining experience of his expertly curated tasting menu. Unfortunately for the guests, which include the likes of Nicholas Hoult, Anya Taylor-Joy, Reed Birney, Arturo Castro, Hong Chau, and more, their invitations were by design, and the Chef has some nefarious plans up his sleeve for each of them.
One of the guests is also a washed-up movie star played by John Leguizamo, who is in attendance with his personal assistant. The movie star is hoping that he can recapture his former stardom with a...

Vice’s “The 3:07 Am Project” gave four emerging horror filmmakers a chance to play around in ‘The Conjuring’ universe with minute-long morsels of murder.
The Conjuring has proven itself to be a worthy cinematic universe, delivering two proper sequels and a slew of spin-offs, with more creepy content on the way to further expand the multi-billion dollar horror franchise. The reception towards Ed and Lorraine Warren’s cinematic antics has somewhat cooled down in recent years and left audiences wondering if what’s currently on slate for The Conjuring universe will be its last hurrah or if “The Nun 3” or “Crooked Man Vs. Annabelle” are inevitable.
There are lofty expectations in place when it comes to The Conjuring IP, but there were also surprisingly ambitious plans in place even during the production of the original movie. A connected Conjuring universe may not have been on anyone’s radar yet.

It’s been another strange year. Perhaps more so than ever, the way films have been released has been in a confusing state of flux. What’s coming to cinemas? If it makes it how many screenings will it actually have? What’s going to which streaming service, and when? There have been a lot of excellent movies released in 2021, but sifting through them has been challenging, even if you’re doing your best to keep up.
Here, the HeyUGuys team have a few suggestions for things that may have slipped through the cracks, but which we think you should catch up with.

Josh Trank’s crafty 2012 found-footage, science-fiction thriller “Chronicle” was one of the most admired studio movies of that year, making more than 10 times its budget back to the tune of $126 million, and scoring strong reviews. The film about high school seniors who acquire telekinetic powers almost immediately sparked rumors of a sequel at 20th Century, and while that looked mostly dead for awhile, producer John Davis recently confirmed to Forbes (via Screen Crush) that a sequel is in the works.
But, in a twist on the male-driven original, this sequel will be told from the female perspective.
“‘Chronicle’ was literally the best return on investment, any of my movies ever made. ‘Chronicle’ we did for $12 million, and it grossed $126.64 million worldwide,” said John Davis, who also serves as a producer on the recent Disney film “Jungle Cruise.”

Photo: ‘Shadow in the Cloud'/Vertical Entertainment ‘Shadow in the Cloud’, released on January 1, ushered in the New Year with an eye-catching genre-bender of a premise that had some scratching their heads--women, World War II, B-17 bombers, espionage, and gremlins. It audaciously blends various tropes, but does it coalesce into something that works? Directed by New Zealander Roseanne Liang in her Hollywood debut, it was originally written by Max Landis who drew ire in 2019 after numerous allegations of emotional and sexual abuse came to public light. To distance him from the project, Liang re-wrote much of the script herself, but due to Writers Guild of America rules, Landis is credited as the writer of the script. Every Friday brings the weekly slate of new arrivals on VOD, but pickings are pretty slim today. Obviously, it’s the first day of 2021 and there are going to be an awful lot of sore heads around the world from the celebrations, as muted as they were legally mandated to be. But the biggest titles have been hitting the various streaming services on offer, and nobody wants to release their movie when the majority of audiences are otherwise occupied.
Indeed, the surprisingly polarizing Wonder Woman 1984, Pixar’s latest emotional roller coaster Soul, Robert Rodriguez’s hugely popular family friendly superhero film We Can Be Heroes and season 3 of Cobra Kai will be dominating the conversation for the foreseeable future, and as a result, there are only eight debutants on VOD this weekend.

“Shadow in the Cloud” is a war picture and a monster movie that dips into one or two more genres before it’s done, but director and co-writer Roseanne Liang (“My Wedding and Other Secrets”) never lets the pace slacken. It’s the kind of movie that has you laughing at the filmmaker’s moxie while also yelping at the suspense.
Liang and co-writer Max Landis get away with any number of bold moves — including sticking their heroine into a cramped, solitary space for the first half-hour and limiting her communication with other characters to voices on a radio channel — but in the end, “Shadow in the Cloud” succeeds so frequently that viewers will be more likely to give some of the lapses in internal logic a pass.

‘Shadow in the Cloud’: Roseanne Liang Turned a Max Landis Script Into Her Own Feminist Monster Movie
Roseanne Liang is intentional about her ambitions: she wants to be a big-time action director, and what better way to prove her abilities than a rip-roaring genre movie that combines zippy action with plenty of winking humor? Enter the World War II-set “Shadow in the Cloud,” the Kiwi’s first action feature — she’s previously written and directed the winning rom-com “My Wedding and Other Secrets” and the lauded drama short “Do No Harm” — which functions as both a punchy midnight movie and a prime example of how an indie-sized budget can still deliver wild action.
Liang’s film makes it clear early on that it’s operating on its own wavelength, combining both a “war is hell” mentality alongside cheeky creature feature jokes. At the center of it all is Maude Garrett (Chloë Grace Moretz), a British flight officer zipping her way toward a jittery B-17.

The specialty box office and streaming space is ringing in 2021 with a peppering of new titles starting with Shadow in the Cloud starring Chloë Grace Moretz, which opens in select theaters and drops on VOD and digital starting January 1, 2021.
Directed by Roseanne Liang who co-wrote the script with Max Landis, Shadow in the Cloud is part war pic, part horror and part women empowerment. Set in World War II, the film follows Captain Maude Garrett (Moretz) who joins an all-male crew of a B-17 bomber with a top-secret package. Caught off guard by the presence of a woman on a military flight, the crew tests Maude’s every move. Just as her quick wit is winning them over, strange happenings and holes in her backstory incite paranoia surrounding her true mission. On top of all of this, there’s something lurking in the shadows — something sinister is tearing at the heart of the plane.

Following a TIFF premiere this fall, Vertical Entertainment has unveiled the first trailer for their action-horror flick Shadow in the Cloud, directed and written by Roseanne Liang. Set for a release on New Year’s Day, the genre-bending WWII is led by Chloë Grace Moretz and originally co-written by the disgraced Max Landis, who was accused of sexual assault, and has since been rewritten by Liang.
In the film, Maude Garret (Moretz) has been given a vital mission to protect a package with her life. She boards a WWII cargo plane set to travel from Auckland to Samoa with an all male crew, who are quick to denigrate her on the basis of her gender. What they do not suspect is a creepy monster on board their aircraft, forcing the crew to work together to survive.

Exclusive: Signature Entertainment has acquired UK & Irish rights to WWII thriller Shadow In The Cloud, starring Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick Ass) and Nick Robinson.
Set in the final throes of WWII, the pic follows a group of Allied soldiers as they prepare to take to the air in a B-17 Flying Fortress. The all-male crew are caught off guard when Captain Maude Garrett, played by Moretz, boards. With her military knowledge initially winning over the soldiers, things escalate quickly into chaos when they suspect her intentions are not as expected. As paranoia kicks in, something far more sinister is lurking in the shadows, something with sharp teeth and a taste for human blood.
Directed by first time feature filmmaker Roseanne Liang and written by Liang and Max Landis, the TIFF title was produced by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Sinister) and Tom Hern (Guns Akimbo) with Atomic Blonde producer Kelly McCormick.

Joby Harold, the writer behind Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Army of the Dead” and the Obi-Wan Kenobi prequel series, is writing the screenplay for the film that’s in very early stages of development. The film is intended for theatrical release.
No logline details were available, but the Space Mountain movie will be a live-action family film inspired by the Tomorrowland attraction at both Disneyland and Disney World.
Harold is also producing with his partner Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, as is the production house Rideback.
While the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise has long been a cash cow for Disney, it was also recently reported that “Ghostbusters” writer Katie Dippold would give another stab at a movie inspired by the Haunted Mansion.

During the Second World War, the Army Air Force Corps referred to B-17 bombers as “Flying Fortresses.” Such words conjure an image of invincibility and safety. But for the men and women who occupied that space it was anything but comforting. In its best moments, Roseanne Liang’s Shadow in the Cloud remembers this. As a new wild horror movie made possible in part by the New Zealand Film Commission, this chiller at 20,000 feet is never scarier than when Chloë Grace Moretz’s officer is strapped into a lower ball turret, with only a view straight down to keep her company. Well, the view and a gremlin.
Yes, there is a gremlin in Shadow in the Cloud, and like the claustrophobic verticality of the movie’s setting, its presence is always felt like a breath on the back of the neck during a stormy flight. Granted this makes for a...

Built around enough wild concepts that it sounds a bit like a Hollywood pitch meeting gone seriously off the rails — it’s a creature feature! set on a World War II B-17! filled with misogynist soldiers! and the star is a badass woman! the soundtrack is synth-heavy! — the craziest part about Roseanne Liang’s nutso “Shadow in the Cloud” is that she very nearly pulls the whole thing off. (even in the face of things like “logic” and “physics” and “common sense”), “Shadow in the Cloud” is the most bonkers mash-up of monster movie and World War II drama since, well, at least this year.
What Liang and Moretz inject into it, however, is a feminist-leaning freshness that does feel original, even in such a crowded field. Audiences willing and able to lean into its special brand of wacky horror will likely enjoy it best, but Liang also keeps...

Bright, the 2017 fantasy thriller headlined by superstar Will Smith, had a distribution strategy that now—about three short years later in the midst of a pandemic—proved bellwether in hindsight. That’s because the project that was tailor-made to be a big screen blockbuster bypassed a theatrical release to premiere as an exclusive streaming offering on Netflix. While the film had its obstacles with critics (our own review was no exception), the streaming giant quickly greenlit a sequel, which is now moving forward with a director.
Louis Leterrier is in talks to occupy the director’s chair for the untitled Bright sequel, according to THR. Should the deal be finalized, the French helmer would step in for David Ayer, who directed the first film coming off two high-profile (theatrically-released) efforts, Suicide Squad (2016) and Fury (2015). While ceding the director’s chair for the sequel, Ayer will return as a producer and...

Josh Trank says that he was so deeply paranoid during the making of Fox’s comic book reboot flop Fantastic Four that he slept with a gun on his nightstand.
In an explosive new interview with Polygon – conducted over four years and published in the week before his new movie Capone hits VOD – Trank has described the nature of his work on the 2015 movie, which suffered from significant studio interference, and the volatile relationship he had with Fantastic Four‘s co-screenwriter, Jeremy Slater, who had seen the success of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers preceding their attempt at the Marvel reboot, and wanted to follow suit.
“I kept saying, ‘That should be our template, that’s what audiences want to see!” remarked Slater. “And Josh just fucking hated every second of it.”
The approach went against Trank’s vision for the project. “The trials of developing Fantastic Four had everything to do with tone.

When Chronicle first hit theaters in 2012, it looked to mark the arrival of several new kids on the Hollywood block. Director Josh Trank, writer Max Landis and stars Dane DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan were all in their mid-20s when the found footage superhero movie burst onto the scene, scoring enthusiastic reviews from critics and earning over $125 million at the box office on a budget of just $12 million.
From the outside looking in, it seemed as though the movie business had found its latest batch of wunderkinds, and while DeHaan and Jordan have since gone on to establish solid careers for themselves, things haven’t worked out quite the same for Landis and Trank. The former will likely find himself blacklisted forever in the wake of some serious misconduct allegations, while the latter moved on to the infamous Fantastic Four reboot.

It might be commonplace these days for Netflix to spend massive amounts of money on original projects with A-list talent attached, but given their increasing power and influence in Hollywood, it’s easy to forget that the streaming service has only really been in the blockbuster business for a little over three years.
2017’s Bright saw them hire director David Ayer fresh off Suicide Squad’s near-$750 million box office haul to helm a script from Max Landis when he was still pegged as screenwriting’s next big thing, and they cast Will Smith in the lead in a buddy cop movie with a twist. The critical reaction didn’t turn out to be particularly great, but a release right around the holiday season nonetheless saw it become one of Netflix’s most-watched originals ever, racking up over eleven million streams in the first three days it was available.

David Ayer’s Bright was heavily touted as Netflix’s first major foray into blockbuster territory, with the streaming giant splashing out $100 million on the fantasy action flick starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. While the movie didn’t find much favor with critics, it was a massive hit for Netflix, with 11 million people tuning in to watch the human/orc buddy cop adventure in the first three days it was available.
Netlflix is very careful with how it releases viewership data for most of its projects, but they seemed keen to let everyone know that Bright was a runaway success, with the numbers surely boosted by the fact that it dropped on the service in late December, just in time for the holidays when the vast majority of subscribers are more inclined to stay in and watch a movie.

Josh Trank suffered a raw deal when his 2015 Marvel movie “Fantastic Four” failed explosively at the box office and earned a dismal 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the “Chronicle” director has emerged on Letterboxd to comment on his own movie — which he reviewed harshly on the cinephile platform.
“The movie is Alright,” Trank wrote in his two-star review of “Fantastic Four,” which was a reportedly disastrous production involving reshoots and on-set drama that spiraled out of control. “I was expecting it to be much worse than it was. I literally haven’t seen it since like two weeks before it came out, and I was in a heavily fucking traumatized state of mind. Why? Eh, save that for another time.

From zombie comic books to a little TV adaptation called The Walking Dead (you may have heard of it), the name Robert Kirkman has become sort of synonymous with horror over the last few years. Now, it appears he’s moving on from his take on the shambling corpse and onto his own interpretation of werewolves: An American Werewolf In London, to be precise.
A recent report from Variety says Kirkman is being eyed up to produce a reboot of the classic werewolf horror flick, as well as being hired as a producer for an up-and-coming Dracula-inspired monster movie, which was pitched by Kirkman. According to the outlet:
Best known as the creator of “The Walking Dead” comics, Kirkman has been sought out on the producing front for more horror IP that includes a reboot for “An American Werewolf in London.”

Part of a series of projects that writer-director Max Landis has been attached to, a remake of his father’s An American Werewolf in London now seems to be off the table, according to ScreenRant. Landis had been involved with the pic for several years, but development had been stalled by multiple accusations of sexual assault against the writer of, among others, Chronicle, American Ultra and Bright. According to reports, Landis’ upcoming screenplays, including Shadow in the Cloud, will likely continue without his direct input due to his significantly damaged reputation in Hollywood.
The original 1981 An American Werewolf in London by John Landis remains a horror-comedy classic for its mixture of an engaging story and groundbreaking special effects. A poorly-received sequel, An American Werewolf in Paris, followed in 1997. We first reported on a remake of the initial movie in 2016, with The Walking Dead‘s David Alpert and Robert Kirkman producing alongside Landis Sr.

Sterling Van Wagenen, co-founder of the Sundance Film Festival, was sentenced to six years to life in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to charges of sexual abuse of a child.
According to the Associated Press, Judge Robert Griffin recommended to the parole board that Van Wagenen be kept in prison longer than the minimum sentence. He also commended the victim, whom prosecutors say was touched inappropriately by Van Wagenen on two separate incidents in 2013 and 2015, for coming forward.
“You did the right thing and you’re not responsible for anything that happened and anything that will happen,” said Griffin said during the sentencing hearing. “You’re a brave young lady.”

An anonymous former Apa employee said in a lawsuit Wednesday that she suffered a “toxic, pervasive and sexually abusive environment” at the agency, and was fired in retaliation after she complained. The agency said in a statement that it had already investigated her claims and found them to be false, and accused her of an extortion attempt.
The lawsuit, filed under the name Jane Doe, said two high-ranking executives subjected her to unwanted sexual comments and overtures, and that she was sexually assaulted by a producer who was an Apa client in July 2017. She said that when she reported to top executives that she was assaulted, they warned her that she would be fired if she went to police.
In a statement to TheWrap, an Apa spokesperson said an investigation of Doe’s claims had found that she falsified texts and emails as part of a shakedown.

In April 2016, MGM won an auction for a Max Landis-penned underwater horror script, “Deeper,” with Bradley Cooper and “White God” director Kornel Mundruczo attached. When the timing didn’t work for the talent, MGM pressed forward on the project, hiring Baltasar Kormakur (“Everest”) last fall; in February, Idris Elba was reportedly in talks to star. Today, Landis is the subject of a searing expose by Amy Zimmerman in The Daily Beast — and, according to sources who requested anonymity, “Deeper” has fallen apart.
Of course, movies come together or don’t all the time, for reasons large and small. However, this may be the first indication that Landis’ counterintuitive, decade-long career path — one that included making critically reviled films while enjoying a long-term reputation as an unabashed emotional and sexual abuser of women — is no longer one that will scale.
