“Peoor Things” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win for period pictures at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 21. It prevailed over three of its Oscar rivals, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer” plus “Maestro.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “Barbie,” won the fantasy/sci-fi race. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Saltburn”
In its 25-year history, the CDG has previewed only 12 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design: nine of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last six Costume Designers Guild Awards winners three have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Cruella” in 2022, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.
Last year, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over eventual Oscar champ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

While there has been plenty of variation in their choices, all four organizations have shown solidarity in recognizing three films: “Barbie,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer”. Six of the remaining nine guilds will be heard from over the next week, starting with both the actors and directors on Jan. 10. They will be followed in order by the cinematographers (Jan. 11), producers (Jan. 12), sound editors (Jan. 15), and visual effects artists (Jan. 16), all of whom will reveal their awards finalists during the Oscar nominations voting period.

Three of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2024 Oscars reaped bids on January 4 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things”contend here in the period picture category against “Maestro,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer.”
The Oscar frontrunner, “Barbie” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.”
‘The contemporary costume contenders are “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield” and “Saltburn.”
Our two other predicted Oscar nominees — “The Color Purple” and “Wonka” — can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored...

The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

The YA adaptation boom of the 2010s is a fascinating time, filled with potential franchises that never took off, some that lingered far beyond their expiration date, and others that remained successful till their final curtain call. The landscape had never been more fruitful for teens and, especially, young girls to have something for them at the box office. But if you weren’t already in love with an established book, like Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games,” the odds weren’t in your favor that your favorite adaptation would get more than a single feature.
In February 2013 Warner Bros. released “Beautiful Creatures,” an adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s 2009 novel. The story follows Southern boy Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) and his growing attraction to newcomer Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert). Ethan soon realizes Lena comes from a long line of witches, and on her 16th birthday her soul will...

Although Christopher Nolan has moved from Warner Bros. to Universal, we wouldn’t be surprised if his new home follows some of the same marketing tactics that have now become standard for his releases––which means we may see a new tease for Oppenheimer attached to this December’s major blockbuster, Avatar: The Way of Water. In the meantime, we’ve received substantial new detail on the project, which captures the story of the father of the atomic bomb.
Legendary costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, who has previously collaborated with Steven Soderbergh, Paul Verhoeven, Kathryn Bigelow, Steven Spielberg, John Woo, and many more, is working with Nolan for the first time on Oppenheimer and has shared new details on a podcast discussion with From Tailors with Love.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pieces, including last year’s winner “Little Women.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Costume Design.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 71 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2019 winner “Black Panther,” and recent champs “Alice in Wonderland...

‘Tenet’: Ludwig Göransson Put Chris Nolan’s Breath in His Score — and Rethought Composing Altogether
When composer Ludwig Göransson first met with Christopher Nolan after reading the “Tenet” script to discuss how they were going to implement the time inversion theme for the score, the director already had a musical idea in mind: making the electric guitar sound different. That turned out to be a great catalyst for reverse engineering the musical soundscape.
“I started writing music three or four months before shooting,” said the “Black Panther” Oscar winner, who was available when Hans Zimmer committed to Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune.” Chris was actually in town and we had a lot of time together, listening to demos I created, so we analyzed every little sound, and we started building our sound world very early. When Chris first mentioned that he wanted the guitar to not sound like a guitar, I had to rethink how to record a guitar with a lot of sonic options. That...

That turns out to be excellent advice for audiences, because after it’s all over, there’s a sneaking suspicion that maybe the plot doesn’t quite add up and perhaps you’d better see it again, just to make sure. It’s a shrewd strategy that will guarantee repeat business in these troubled times.

At long last, the masses will be able to see Christopher Nolan’s latest in about a month. Yes, earlier today there was a press release put out by Warner Bros. announcing when Tenet would be coming to homes. Officially, December 15th is when the film will be available on 4K, Blu-ray, and Digital Video On Demand. The movie obviously is still playing in theaters, but with no signs that Los Angeles or New York City will see cinemas opening soon, this seems like the right call by WB. Nolan fans will get to finally see the flick, no one is put at risk, and the company can continue to try and make some money back on it. All in all, everyone seems to win here with this choice… Here’s the press release, making the Tenet announcement: Burbank, CA, November 5 – “Tenet,” the must-see motion picture event, playing now on...

“Don’t try to understand it”, says a character near the beginning of Christopher Nolan’s brain bending sci-fi blockbuster Tenet. That turns out to be excellent advice for audiences, because after it’s all over, there’s a sneaking suspicion that maybe the plot doesn’t quite add up and perhaps you’d better see it again, just to make sure. It’s a shrewd strategy that will guarantee repeat business in these troubled times.
Tenet centres on The Protagonist (BlacKkKlansman’s John David Washington), a skilled secret agent who’s recruited for a complex mission involving a device that allows objects and people to change the direction they travel through time. In the hands of the wrong people – in this...

Clothes on Film editor Christopher Laverty joins regular From Tailors With Love Vlog hosts Peter Brooker and Matt Spaiser, plus special guest Bobby Morelli of Matched Perfectly, to discuss the costume design of Inception.
With only days to go before the release of Tenet (in the UK at least), there has never been a more appropriate time to revisit Inception. Of course both films are directed by Christopher Nolan, but even more importantly they are both costumed by Jeffrey Kurland. Ostensibly similar in style to Tenet, though we shall see, despite being a decade old, Inception has dated extremely well – in terms of the film itself and the costumes. It’s a menswear wet dream of suits and sports jackets, shackets and dreamy textures. In the Vlog we discuss such matters as the film’s enduring look, what the costumes mean in context of the story and exactly who was responsible for all that tailoring.

Just over ten years ago, Inception arrived in cinemas (remember those?) like a well-dressed jigsaw puzzle and caused us all brain ache. As twisty, knotty, turny now as it ever was, director Christopher Nolan’s dazzling sci-fi adventure also remains one of the chicest attired movies of all time. In honour of Inception being a decade old, we caught up with its costume designer, Academy Award nominee, BAFTA and Costume Designer’s Guild winner, Jeffrey Kurland. Not so much an interview, more a reminiscing chat as Mr. Kurland recounts his approach to the film, costume clues and unmissable sock moments. Plus we even cover that apparent ‘shirt malfunction’ from one of his more recent movies, Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018). He won’t be drawn on his next film for Christopher Nolan though, Tenet. Well, not much…
Let’s do some memory lane.

A new, absolutely stonking trailer has dropped for what we confidently predict will be The Best Film Ever Made, Christopher Nolan’s latest, Tenet.
It is almost impossible to watch the trailer (below) and not think of Inception (2010), even though this more of a ‘vibe’ thing than any plot familiarity. The plot, of course with this being Nolan, is just scratched upon at this stage. Basically, it’s time about ‘inversion’ and lot of beautiful people in beautiful clothes going on a mission. Another link to Inception is returning costume designer Jeffrey Kurland, back for more sexy menswear that will, with any luck, kick start a Non Skinny suit and seperates revival. Robert Pattinson seems to be getting the lion’s share of ever so slightly louche looks, à la Tom Hardy in Inception. Really though everyone is going to look gorgeous, of that we have no doubt whatsoever. We...

They’re not backing down. That is the pledge and also the prestige (to borrow a phrase from another film) behind the second trailer to Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, Tenet. Still a vague and enigmatic tease of high-concept ideas and teasingly time-bending physics, the second trailer almost confirms defiantly that the first Nolan film in three years will be going to theaters. Albeit without an exact date or even month in the fine print.
In his first film since 2017’s Dunkirk, the acclaimed director appears to be challenging (or at least re-contextualizing) our basic understanding of physics in much the same way that Interstellar did, albeit with a film that looks as sleekly exciting as his biggest popcorn triumphs to date, The Dark Knight and Inception.
For Tenet, Nolan reteams with a big chunk of his Dunkirk crew, including cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, production designer Nathan Crowley, costume designer Jeffrey Kurland,...

We’re a week from the first post-Oscars governors meeting, on March 19; that’s usually the time for the show postmortem. However, the Spielberg vs. Netflix elephant is already waiting in the boardroom.
While supporters can (and do) wax poetic about the “theatrical experience,” there’s a very practical question on the table: Just how far is the Academy willing to go to declare the primacy of brick-and-mortar cinema? Currently, the Oscar-qualifying requirement is one week in a commercial theater — and that release can be day and date with streaming. Governors argued heatedly about this on Oscar night and since, complaining that Netflix movies like “Roma” have an unfair advantage: They have the deepest pockets, the biggest platform, and no obligation to the 90-day theatrical release window.
Steven Spielberg clearly believes that movies belong in movie theaters, but extending the theatrical requirement could impact documentary, foreign-language, and independent films that...

On Thursday (June 14), the motion picture academy announced the results of its annual Board of Governors election. Alfred Molina prevailed in a hotly contested contest to be one of the three representatives from the actors branch while Susanne Bier won her bid to be a voice for the directors branch.
Each of the 17 branches of the academy is represented by three governors who serve three-year terms. Those terms are staggered such that one governor from each branch is up for re-election each year. And no governor may serve for more than nine uninterrupted years.

Given the myriad challenges that face the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it’s surprising that more than 180 members vied for 17 available spots on the 54-member Board of Governors, which oversees the Academy’s strategic mission, financial health and the Oscars. The run-off voting ended May 18 to cull the field to four nominees per branch. The elected 2018–19 Board of Governors will assume their posts on July 1.
The Academy’s 17 branches are each represented by three governors, who may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms. Actor Tom Hanks is leaving, having served his three-year term, while producer Kathleen Kennedy, Steven Spielberg publicist Marvin Levy and director Michael Mann did not seek re-election.
Among the hopefuls who did not make the cut are actresses Meg Ryan and Brie Larson, screenwriter John Ridley, producer Michael De Luca, public relations branch member Rob Friedman, and executive Michael Barker.
