This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies, with each one reflecting a special event or day in May.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a tense battle between mothers, a tale of evil in the suburbs, a fast-food slasher, a twisty wartime horror story, and an indie slow burn with a Hitchcockian vibe.
You’ll Like My Mother (1972)
Directed by Lamont Johnson.
The movie stars Oscar winner Patty Duke as young widow Francesca, who’s visiting her late husband’s mother (Rosemary Murphy) for the first time at a remote house in snowy Minnesota. Soon things take a turn when Francesca becomes not only stranded at her in-law’s house, but also drugged and taken prisoner.

The year is 1995, and you’ve submitted your film to the Sundance Film Festival, and they’ve said no. What do you do? Are you disappointed? Yes. Do you feel lost or defeated? Maybe. Do you give up? No. That is the origin story of the Slamdance Film Festival, which happens every year in Park City, Utah, at the same time as the Sundance Film Festival. Unwilling to take “no” for an answer, Dan Mirvish, Jon Fitzgerald, Shane Kuhn, Peter Baxter, and Paul Rachman created the Slamdance Festival to give independent filmmakers a voice.

This Tuesday, July 2nd, S.K. Vaughn’s sci-fi thriller novel, Across the Void hits shelves in bookstores everywhere, and plans are already in the works to see the book adapted for the big screen.
The novel is being adapted by Skybound Entertainment, Circle of Confusion, and Universal Pictures. Shane Kuhn, who wrote the novel under the pen name Vaughn, will write the script. Deadline reports the following synopsis:
Commander Maryam “May” Knox’s fight for survival after she wakes up alone in a ruined spacecraft in Jupiter orbit, and attempts to survive and return to Earth.
Everything is obviously very early in the process, but it must be a pretty great story if it is getting snatched up so fast for an adaptation. Does this pique your interest? Will you be checking out this book while you wait for the movie?...

No one expected Slamdance to see its 25th anniversary — least of all founders Dan Mirvish, Jon Fitzgerald, Shane Kuhn, Peter Baxter, and Paul Rachman. All were filmmakers rejected by the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, and their concerns initially ran to the short term: how to screen their films in and around Park City, the center of the indie-filmmaking universe.
They began by showing their work at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and migrated to spaces around Park City, where they handed out flyers and cajoled makeshift venues. They took turns running the projectors.
The next year, they came back to Park City — this time, setting up headquarters at the Treasure Mountain Inn, on top of Main Street. Screenings were still chaotic, but the ethos was in place: a festival programmed by filmmakers, for first-time filmmakers who had shoestring budgets and unique visions but no distribution… and, the benefit...

The Slamdance Film Festival is an annual film festival. It focuses on low-budget independent films and emerging artists. The mantra that it lives by states “By Filmmakers, For Filmmakers.” It is a unique festival which is not similar to others out there because filmmakers fully program the event. It adamantly encourages self-governance among independents and only delivers what filmmakers attend the festival to see. The week-long celebrations take part every January in the astonishingly spectacular snow-capped mountains of Park City in Utah. Four gentlemen were behind its foundation in 1995 namely: Dan Mirvish Peter Baxter Shane Kuhn Jon Fitzgerald They

Dave Franco has been steadily making a name for himself over the last few years. After turning out great comedy performances in 21 Jump Street and this summer's hit Neighbors he’s about to star in what might become his own action franchise. (Cbr) Dave Franco, fresh off his turn in "Neighbors," is about to roll up his sleeves for an action vehicle of his own. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor has been tapped to star in "The Intern’s Handbook" for Sony Pictures, based on the novel by Shane Kuhn. It follows John Lago, the rising star at an intern placement agency that serves as a front for a secret network of assassins. When he’s set to assassinate a high-level executive, Lago finds his mission compromised by a beautiful FBI agent assigned with taking down the same target. “We really feel like he’s the next star,” producer Neal Moritz said of Franco. “We just think he has immense talent as a leading man, and he’s someone who can do humor. He’s paid his dues. He’s built a great resume of co-starring roles, and he’s ready to be a lead.

Right now you can see Dave Franco turn in a fantastic comedic performance in Neighbors, but now it's time for the supporting star to get a film of his own to lead. THR has word that Sony Pictures has picked up the rights to Shane Kuhn's novel The Intern's Handbook: A Thriller with the intention of developing it as a starring vehicle for Franco to lead. The actor will be working with familiar company as Oren Uziel, fresh off scripting 22 Jump Street, will adapt the book about an intern placement agency called Hr Inc. that is actually a front for a network of assassins whose targets are high-profile corporate executives. Read on! Franco would play John Lago, the best of the best at the company, skilled at getting coffee and making copies while stealthily ratcheting up a body count. The first book just hit shelves in April and is...

Hot on the heels of the massive success of Neighbors, stand-out supporting star Dave Franco has locked down his first potential starring franchise (because, yes, the Jump Street series is totally awesome, but that’s all the Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill show, and we all know it), and despite the title of its source material, this one could actually lead to a string of dark comedy outings, not straight thrillers. Thank goodness, we got a little worried there, ready to burn down Hollywood for not giving Franco the comedy franchise he deserves. THR reports that Sony Pictures has picked up the rights to Shane Kuhn’s novel “The Intern’s Handbook: A Thriller,” with an eye to turn the book into a Franco-starring franchise. Here’s hoping that the film will somehow necessitate a Robert De Niro impersonation, Jinxy cat and all. Publisher Simon & Schuster shares the synopsis for Kuhn’s book: John Lago is a...

Dave Franco might be getting the chance to lead his own franchise in the near future and quite frankly (pun intended), it’s about time. After terrific turns in supporting roles in films like 21 Jump Street and Neighbors, the actor is truly ready to break out and it looks like he’ll be able to do so in Sony’s adaptation of The Intern’s Handbook.
Based on Shane Kuhn’s novel of the same name, the film is described as “part confessional and part Diy manual” and will see the rising star playing John Lago, a successful hit man who “infiltrates top-level companies and assassinate crooked executives while disguised as an intern.” In The Intern Handbook, Lago faces his final and toughest assignment yet, as he’s pitted against an FBI agent named Alice, who is tasked with “taking down the same law partner that he’s been assigned to kill.

Dave Franco — a.k.a the Franco brother that you aren't totally sick of hearing about yet — has landed his first lead role: in Sony's adaptation of Shane Kuhn's recently released novel The Intern's Handbook: A Thriller. Slamdance cofounder Peter Baxter isn't shy when discussing the origins of his indie-minded festival. After being rejected from Sundance, Baxter and fellow passed-over filmmakers Dan Mirvish, Jon Fitzgerald and Shane Kuhn decided to inject the film festival scene with punk spirit. So in 1995, they held the first Slamdance, subtitled, "Anarchy in Utah." "There was a bit of 'there goes the neighborhood' when we started," Baxter says of the first festival. ''We didn't have much

Danny Trejo is 69 years old and still kicking ass – much more ass than he should be. It’d be one thing if his only leading role this year was Machete Kills, but Trejo has a whole list of titles he’ll be appearing in this year alone, with his most recent action adventure being Dead In Tombstone. Directed by Roel Reiné (Death Race 2/Death Race: Inferno), Trejo brings hell to Earth in this undead Western thriller, making a deal with the Devil, played by none other than Mickey Rourke. If Guerrero (Trejo) can deliver the souls of the six men who double-crossed him, he’ll save his own hell-cursed afterlife – assuming he can trust the Devil.

Her newest project, Blood Rites, is a well-shot, micro-budget horror feature that she co-wrote, produced and directed with the help of her dedicated team. In spite of our underwhelming review, Booraem generously gave her time (and refreshing sense of humor) to speak with Planet Fury about working with a low budget, her creative process and embracing negative criticism.

Saw I-iii and Piranha 3D star Dina Meyer will be joining Anthony Michael Hall (The Breakfast Club The Dark Knight, Weird Science), Danny Trejo (Machete, Predators) and Mickey Rourke (Sin City) in Dead in Tombstone, the Roel Reine-directed action adventure film that's now filming in Bucharest, Romania. Bloody Disgusting exclusively reported the film back in January. Penned by Shane Kuhn and Brendan Cowles, with revisions by Michael Weiss, "Trejo plays Guerrero Hernandez, the unquestioned leader of the Blackwater Gang of outlaws. But after freeing his half-brother Red (Hall) from prison, Guerrero's plan to loot the mining town of Edendale backfires spectacularly -- because Guerrero is shot to death by his own brother, the treacherous Red. After making a deal with the Devil (Rourke), Guerrero comes back from the dead a year later, to seek his revenge, and the town (which has been renamed Tombstone) will soon have its dusty...

Deadline reports that a B-movie trio of Danny Trejo, Anthony Michael Hall, and Mickey Rourke will soon find themselves leading their own studio film, Dead in Tombstone, an actioner that Roel Reiné (Death Race 2, The Scorpion King 3) is directing for Universal.
In the film — written by Brendan Cowles and Shane Kuhn — Trejo stars as “Guerrero Hernandez, leader of the Blackwater Gang of outlaws.” Although his ambitions to rob a small town are thwarted when his recently-freed half-brother (Hall) betrays and kills him, a deal with Satan (Rourke) brings him back to life. With the fitting and newly-named town of Tombstone in Guerrero’s sights, the small community “will soon have its dusty streets running knee-deep in a river of blood.”
I’d normally be, like, totally down for Tombstone as is, yet some of that behind-the-camera talent raises a few… questions. A film like this is, ostensibly, only supposed...

Quick! Name the most gritty, badass actors you can think of. Chances are pretty good Danny Trejo and Mickey Rourke probably came to mind, but if you hadn't have read that headline beforehand, I'd be willing to guess that nobody would have included Anthony Michael Hall in the company of those other guys. But apparently a casting director did, and has put the John Hughes wunderkind opposite Trejo and Rouke in a new action adventure called Dead in Tombstone. Roel Reine (Death Race: Inferno, Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption) will direct from a screenplay written by Shane Kuhn and Brendan Cowles. Deadline has details about the story, which describes Trejo's character as a leader of the Blackwater Gang of outlaws. After he frees his half-brother (Hall) from prison, Trejo is double-crossed during the looting of a mining town. The now-dead Trejo makes a deal with the Devil (Rourke, of...

Mickey Rourke once tangled with the Devil in Angel Heart. This year, however, he’s getting the chance to be Satan in Roel Reine’s new Grindhouse flavoured action adventure Dead In Tombstone, which sees Rourke appearing alongside Danny Trejo and Anthony Michael Hall.Tombstone finds Trejo as Guerrero Hernandez, the leader of the fearsome Blackwater* gang of outlaws. He hatches a plan to break his half brother Red (Hall) out of the slammer and takes him along on a looting spree in the mining town of Edendale. Trouble is, Red double- crosses him and Guerrero ends up dead. But a little thing like mortality rarely stops a Danny Trejo character and, after doing a deal with the devil (Rourke), he rises from the dead a year later and unleashes bloody revenge across the town of Tombstone. Thank goodness he picked that place and not Rainbowville or Happy Town…Reine,...

NEW YORK -- Intrepid Pictures has acquired the graphic novel The Expendable One and signed Shane Kuhn and Brendan Cowles to write the screenplay for the superhero satire.
Intrepid Pictures partners Marc D. Evans and Trevor Macy will produce the feature, which centers on a typical suburban guy who accidentally injects himself with a serum that allows his body to heal from any injury. He tries to help some locals with the aid of a police radio, but when the CIA recruits him to find a serial killer, he finds he is in over his head.
Writer Jason M. Burns and illustrator Bryan Baugh published the book through Viper Comics last year.
Kuhn and Cowles are now writing the video game-inspired action film Twitch for Sony Pictures and Neal Moritz's Original Film. The pair is set to make their directorial debut with the Lionsgate horror film Drive-Thru and have a script deal at Focus Features' genre arm, Rogue Pictures.
