Exclusive: Jonas Dassler (The Golden Glove) has been tapped to play German pastor and theologian-turned-spy Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the thriller God’s Spy, based on a true story.
Others set for the pic written and directed by Sully scribe Todd Komarnicki include Flula Borg (The Suicide Squad), David Jonsson (Industry), August Diehl (A Hidden Life), Moritz Bleibtreu (World War Z) and BAFTA Award nominee Clarke Peters (The Wire).
The film currently in production is set in Berlin during the time of the Third Reich, examining Bonhoeffer’s determination to live his life with uncompromising political and spiritual courage, while speaking truth to power, in his attempt to save countless Jewish lives. Bonhoeffer was among only a few clergy who were early to recognize the danger of Hitler’s anti-Semitic rhetoric, and while the German church acquiesced to Hitler, Bonhoeffer took him on. First, from the pulpit — and then from the front lines.

I don’t have a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary in front of me but the OxfordDictionaries.com website defines “boredom” as “the state of feeling bored.” Which is about as insightful as anything one can find in “The Professor and the Madman.”
The film, credited to “Pb Shemran” — a pseudonym for Farhad Safinia, who co-wrote Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto” — stars Gibson as James Murray, the man responsible for compiling and completing most of the Oed before his death. The astoundingly thorough compendium of every word in the English language was a mammoth undertaking and required significant assistance from a wide variety of sources. One of those sources happened to be confined to a mental institution after committing murder.
Sean Penn co-stars as Dr. William Chester Minor, a Civil War solider and doctor with paranoid delusions that led him to chase a stranger through the streets and gun him down.

Mel Gibson’s ‘The Professor And The Madman’ To Get Theatrical Release Via Vertical After Legal Fight
Exclusive: The Mel Gibson-Sean Penn period film The Professor and the Madman will be getting a theatrical release with Vertical Entertainment after the distributor took U.S. rights to the Voltage Pictures production. A theatrical release is planned for the second quarter of this year.
Gibson and his Icon Productions had tried to block the release of the movie, which is based on Simon Winchester’s book about the origins of the Oxford English Dictionary. This was spurred by a disagreement with Voltage CEO Nicolas Chartier over the pic’s shooting location. Gibson and director Farhad Safinia wanted key scenes shot in Oxford, England instead of Trinity College in Dublin. Voltage argued the pic was already over budget and behind schedule, with Gibson and Safinia reportedly walking off the pic.

Locarno, Switzerland — Originally announced as a movie re-teaming, post “Southpaw,” Antoine Fuqua and Jake Gyllenhaal’s “The Man Who Made It Snow” is now set up at Epix as a limited TV series, Fuqua said Saturday at Locarno Festival, where he will present Denzel Washington-starrer “The Equalizer 2” at the 8,000 seat Piazza Grande, one of the biggest open-air cinemas in Europe.
Inspired by the true story of Max Mermelstein, a Jewish hotel engineer who becomes embroiled unwittingly and then unwillingly in the building billion-dollar U.S. drug trade of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel, “The Man Who Made It Snow” was originally written by Michael Kingston and Brett Tabor. A new screenwriter is now being brought in to transform the movie into a drama series. Gyllenhaal may or may not be involved, according to his schedule, said Fuqua.

Antoine Fuqua and “Sully” writer Todd Komarnicki are developing a film about the 2003 terrorist attack at Mike’s Place, a beachside blues bar in Israel.
Komarnicki will produce through his Guy Walks Into a Bar banner and also direct from a script by Tony Spiridakis. Fuqua’s production credits include “Southpaw” and “Olympus Has Fallen.”
The duo optioned the 2004 documentary “Blues by the Beach,” directed by Joshua Faudem, and the film rights to Jack Baxter’s 2015 graphic novel “Mike’s Place: A True Story of Love, Blues and Terror in Tel Aviv.” The filmmakers have also obtained Baxter’s life rights.
When the bombing took place, Baxter had been working on a documentary about Mike’s Place, a venue popular among young people, where discussion of politics and religion were not allowed. A suicide bomber attacked the bar, killing three people and injuring 50, including Baxter and security guard Avi Tabib,...

If anything, this has certainly been an interesting week when it comes to superhero trivia. For example, not only have we learned nifty things such as Batman & Robin director Joel Schumacher wishing he’d gotten the opportunity to direct a movie focused squarely on Arkham Asylum, but we’re also about to look back at a forgotten attempt to bring The Flash to the small screen.
By now, the current series’ reputation most certainly precedes it and many of you are no doubt aware of the show that featured John Wesley Shipp as the lead, which aired nearly three decades ago. But what you may not have heard about was when the now defunct WB network tried to bring the Scarlet Speedster to television back in 2003.
At that time, Smallville was still in its infancy and, while it’s fairly well known that those working in WB’s TV division were so close to bringing an Aquaman spinoff to fruition – and later Justice League, believe it or not – there were other DC properties they had their eye on, namely The Flash. In fact, Daily Variety broke the story the very same day Christian Bale was announced as having been cast as Batman.
Basically, Todd Komarnicki (Resistance, Elf) was tasked with writing and executive producing this drastically different take on the iconic hero that’d have seen him as a citizen of Gotham City who was fresh out of college. What’s more is that he wouldn’t have worn any type of slick costume, mirroring Smallville’s “no tights, no flights” mandate. These days, many would scoff at such a notion, but it’s important to remember that when this project was taking off, superheroes weren’t yet fully considered cool in the eyes of the mainstream (I’d argue that our current Golden Age didn’t kickoff until 2008 with the releases of The Dark Knight and Iron Man.)
Komarnicki had this to offer before the endeavor hit a dead end:
“This is a story about a guy who’s aimlessly drifting through life and barely moving at the speed of life when he discovers his calling is to move at the speed of light.”
What remains unclear to this day is who’d have taken on the mantle, be it Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, Wally West, or Bart Allen. Based on what WB’s Carolyn Bernstein had to say though, it may have been one of the younger iterations:
“It’s a big, fun, adventure series. There’s also a mentor character who’ll train him, and there’s a legacy of Flashes before him.”
While it’s fun to ponder what could have been – also because time travel would’ve been a core element – it’s for the best this never took off because we would’ve never seen Smallville’s version of The Flash (Bart Allen), who was the first major DC hero to guest star on that series. Furthermore, the dominoes leading to the Arrowverse as we know it today likely wouldn’t have fallen, either.

If there is one thing we know about 2017, it is that it is a dark time. What we need is a glimmer of hope, something to show that there is still good out there, and surprisingly there is evidence of that in movies like Sully: Miracle on the Hudson. Though it also shows the clinical and cynical nature of the world we live in.
Sully: Miracle on the Hudson is based on the true story of Captain “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks), the pilot who managed to land his plane saving all those aboard. Set in the days after the event, it delves both into Sully’s self-doubt about his actions, and the investigation that unfolded into his actions.

Jessica Chastain has crossed a lot off her career bucket list so far. She’s worked with a string of revered directors in everything from indies to blockbusters, landed two Oscar nominations, has a Golden Globe on her shelf, and essentially has her pick of some of the best roles in Hollywood. Now, she’s going to join the ongoing exodus to television.
Deadline reports that Chastain will produce and possibly star in the limited series “Mercury 13.” Todd Komarnicki (“Sully“) will be writing the project which will carry similar vibes to “Hidden Figures,” telling the story of the brave women pilots who trained in secret and passed their tests to be astronauts in Project Mercury during the 1960s, but were passed over by Nasa from going into space.

Last year IndieWire shared free scripts available to download from 2016 Oscar Contenders such as “Carol,” “Spotlight,” and “Room,” among others. Now, we have a new list full of screenplays that you can skim over, read how the writer envisioned the film, and then go see how the director interpreted it on the big screen. These scripts are also great for aspiring writers to get ideas for their own stories, as well as see how a Hollywood film screenplay really looks like.
Among the screenplays included in this year’s list include “Captain Fantastic” written by Matt Ross and starring Viggo Mortensen, “The Girl on the Train” penned by Erin Cressida Wilson” and “Hail, Caesar!” written by Joel and Ethan Coen.

This year’s contenders for best adapted screenplay are quite the eclectic group based on their sources — something that can never be said for those competing for best original screenplay. When looking at this category’s past since the year 2000, can history dictate which type of adapted screenplays the Academy might be leaning toward at the 2017 Oscars?
This site’s namesake, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, honed in on nine films considered either frontrunners (the first five) or major threats (the last four) in his latest check-in on the Oscar race: Moonlight, Lion, Fences, Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Nocturnal Animals, Sully, Silence, and Loving. The original sources for these films are as varied as the subject matter in the works they inspired, so let’s break them down.

Sometimes, when it comes to greenlighting a big movie in this town, it boils down to an assistant. While some of the biggest writers in Hollywood typically populate the best original screenplay and best adapted screenplay categories, it’s not uncommon for Broadway vets to pop up as well. This year is no different as some folks from the Great White Way are up for the biggest honor in Tinseltown: a golden Oscar statuette. Let’s take a closer look at these great talents, shall we?

MaryAnn’s quick take… The ultimate anti-disaster movie. A supremely gripping and powerfully emotional film about, paradoxically, what happens when everything works as it should. I’m “biast” (pro): I remember that day vividly…
I’m “biast” (con): …but I worried about how it would be dramatized
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I was still living in New York in January 2009 when Chesley Sullenberger landed a commercial airliner full of passengers on the Hudson River.
Landed a commercial airliner on the Hudson River.
Not in. On.
And almost everyone walked away unhurt. A bit cold and wet. One flight attendant got a nasty cut on her leg. We didn’t know that at the time. All we knew was that a goddamn plane had landed on the river and everything was fine.
It almost sounds like that...

Tom Hanks brings class and gravitas to Clint Eastwood's new film, Sully: Miracle On The Hudson. Here's our review.
I’m a bit of a fan of The Graham Norton Show. I’ve written about it before, but I like in particular the unfussy way that Norton brings all of his guests on at once, allows them to chat to each other, yet still get across what they’re on the programme for.
Last week’s guest was Tom Hanks, who’s been doing promotional duties for the renamed-for-the-uk Sully: Miracle On The Hudson. It’s the story of Captain Chesley Sullenberger, who successfully landed a passenger jet on the Hudson River in New York, saving the lives of all 155 people as he did so. It sounds spoilery saying that, but this is where the film starts.

As it turns out, Todd Komarnicki’s path from the first pitch to being hired to write the script for the Clint Eastwood-directed biopic Sully was anything but certain.
