In 1974, Mel Brooks’ Western comedy “Blazing Saddles” shook up the game, sending up themes of racism that were pervasive in Hollywood, the Western genre and American culture as a whole. Now, “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” is attempting to keep its legacy alive in a fresh new story for a family audience.
“You know, it’s inspired by [‘Blazing Saddles’],” Rob Minkoff, director of the new film, told Variety. “Then it became a fable. Because it wasn’t originally intended to be a fable, but that was actually my contribution — which was that we make it a story about a dog in a world of cats who don’t accept him because he’s a dog. The idea of that is, it’s a metaphor of the same kind of story and same kind of situation. But it becomes more universal.”

“Where the Crawdads Sing,” Sony’s adaptation of the hit novel by Delia Owens and produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, earned 2.3 million in its Thursday preview screenings that began at 3 p.m. The film played at 3,150 locations on Thursday and will open in approximately 3,625 locations this weekend.

Both films are expected to fall behind “Thor: Love and Thunder” as it moves into its second weekend.

Disney/Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder will continue its reign atop the weekend box office in its second session, with on the low-end an anticipated 65 decline or 50M from its 144M opening.
The movie is easily heading past 200M in the next three days, and yesterday grossed an estimated 13.6M for a running total that’s just under 170M.
Pic’s first Tuesday, thanks to summer traffic mid-week, is ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness by 8 which did 12.6M.
Thor 4‘s anticipated second weekend decline is in line with recent Marvel fare, i.e. Spider-Way: No Way Home (-67), Doctor Strange 2 (-67) and Eternals (-62).
Two smaller sized budget wide releases, Paramount/Nickelodeon’s animated Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank (45M production cost, 10M acquisition by the Melrose Ave. lot from Gfm Animation) and Sony/Hello Sunshine/3000 Picture’s 24M production Where the Crawdads Sing,...

It’s not every day that you get to see Richard Pryor listed as one of the screenwriters of a new movie. That’s because Pryor died in 2005. But when I saw his name credited among the seven writers of “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank,” it gave me an unreasonable jolt of optimism. If you’re wondering what Pryor’s name is doing on a computer-animated comedy about a samurai canine, it’s because the script is credited to Ed Stone and Nate Hopper — and also to Mel Brooks, Norman Steinberg, Andrew Bergman, Alan Uger, and Pryor, who were the five screenwriters of “Blazing Saddles,” the landmark Mel Brooks Western comedy that came out in 1974.
“Paws of Fury” was originally entitled “Blazing Samurai,” because it recycles (sort of) the premise of “Blazing Saddles,” a movie Brooks originally wanted to make with Pryor as its star. He was set...

The amusing “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” capably makes the case that more animated kids’ movies should be based on classic comedies.
Formerly titled “Blazing Samurai,” “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank,” written by Ed Stone and Nate Hopper, directed by Rob Minkoff (“The Lion King”), Mark Koetsier, and Chris Bailey, borrows a title structure from the Bruce Lee movie “Fist of Fury” and riffs on the classic Mel Brooks Western comedy “Blazing Saddles” (Brooks also offers a delightful vocal performance).
It’s a breezy, funny, highly self-referential flick steeped in movie history.
Stone and Hopper swap the Old West setting for a Japanese village inhabited entirely by cats, and the intrepid Sheriff Bart played by Cleavon Little in “Blazing Saddles” for a dog named Hank (voiced by Michael Cera), who dreams of being a samurai. “Paws of Fury” stylistically inhabits the aesthetic of the Western and the classic martial arts movie,...

After a busy summer at the movies — where five blockbusters have opened to 100 million or more — the dog days may be upon the domestic box office.
That is, unless Hollywood can field a sleeper hit…or two. Over the weekend, three new releases — Sony’s literary adaptation “Where the Crawdads Sing,” Paramount’s animated “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” and the Focus Features period drama “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” — hope to surprise as they make their way to the big screen. However, none of those offerings will come close to dethroning Disney’s Marvel adventure “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which opened to 143 million and looks to add 55 million to 65 million in its sophomore outing.
In terms of newcomers, “Where the Crawdads Sing” and “Paws of Fury” each hope to generate at least 10 million between Friday and Sunday. Box office watchers believe “Crawdads” could pull ahead of “Paws” on box office charts,...

Open Road Films has recently acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the animated family film "Blazing Samurai." The film is described as being "loosely based" on the 1974 Mel Brooks film "Blazing Saddles," which was, in turn, a spoof of '50s/'60s cowboy movies. The official synopsis reads: "An action-packed comedy about a scrappy young dog named Hank who fights to save the town of Kakamucho from becoming the litter box of a nefarious feline warlord, transforming society and himself on his quest to become a true samurai." Open Road Films recently distributed "Nightcrawler," starring Jake Gyllanhaal, and the company's upcoming features include Oliver Stone's Edward Snowden biopic and Barry Levinson's "Rock The Kasbah." "Blazing Samurai" is directed by Chris Bailey ("Alvin and the Chipmunks") and Mark Koetsier ("Kung Fu Panda," "How To Train Your Dragon") from a screenplay...

I thought for the longest time that I would be able to live my entire life without seeing a remake of Mel Brooks' genius 1974 comedy Blazing Saddles. Sadly, new developments have made it apparent that won't be the case - but the weird twist that comes with this story is that what's being made is far from a standard remake. Deadline has picked up news that Open Road Films has acquired a new project called Blazing Samurai that is said to be "loosely based on the iconic 1974 film Blazing Saddles." Helmed by first-time feature directors Chris Bailey (who served as an animation supervisor on the first two Alvin and the Chipmunks movies) and Mark Koetsier (a story artist on Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon), the new family film is said to center...
