- Won Broadway's 1976 Tony Award as Best Score, his lyrics with Marvin Hamlisch's music, for "A Chorus Line." In 2001, he was nominated posthumously for Best Original Musical Score, music and lyrics, for the biographical :A Class Act."
- He was awarded the 2013 Equity Joseph Jefferson Award for Midsize Musical Production for "A Class Act" at the Porchlight Music Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.
