On February 10, Days of our Lives alum Alison Sweeney will star in her 28th movie for Hallmark, Love & Jane, as part of a month-long celebration of famed author Jane Austen. In the film, Sweeney, who is both star and executive producer, plays Austen enthusiast Lilly. “She’s a modern working woman, but she dresses in a romantic way and she speaks in an old-fashioned way based on her love of these books,” Sweeney shares. “She has boyfriend trouble and wishes Jane Austen were there to give her good advice, and when she wakes up the next morning, lo and behold, Jane Austen is in her living room. It’s really fun the way the story unfolds from there.” Austenland (Credit: Giles Keyte/©Sony Pictures Classics/courtesy Everett Collection) The origin of the film started by chance on a night in a hotel room. “I have always been a huge fan of Jane Austen,...

The world has changed a lot in the 34 years between Disney’s animated version of The Little Mermaid and the studio’s new live-action remake, and the new film reflects some of those changes. Halle Bailey, who stars as Ariel in the remake, says that, while the story itself remains essentially the same, the characters have been rewritten to give them — and their relationships — a lot more depth than they had in the first film. The story of The Little Mermaid, of course, is not a new one. The original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale dates back nearly two centuries, and there have been several screen adaptations, dating back to the 1950s. Of course, Disney’s new version of The Little Mermaid is a live-action remake of the company’s Oscar-winning 1989 animated film. Halle Bailey, who stars in the new film, says that the moral of the story is — to paraphrase another Disney movie song — a tale as old as time. A final trailer for the upcoming rom-com “Love Again” starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan has been released.

“Truth is stranger than fiction” stories are often the best, and the true story behind the British WWII tale Operation Mincemeat is plenty strange, and surprisingly impressive in its audacity and brilliant execution. Colin Firth (The King’S Speech) and Matthew Macfadyen star as a pair of WWII British intelligence agents with an odd idea for a ruse to plant false information, aimed at Hitler, about a planned Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe, using a most unlikely spy: a dead man. Director John Madden’s thriller Operation Mincemeat inevitably has the potential for gallows humor, given that outrageous idea, but it is also a tale about an impressive intelligence operation that actually took place and, moreover, played a pivotal role in the war. Add in the fact that...

(from left) Dom (Vin Diesel) and Jakob (John Cena) in “F9,” co-written and directed by Justin Lin. Photo Credit: Giles Keyte/ Universal Pictures. (c) 2021 Universal Studios. All Rights Reserved.
I’ve enjoyed most of the first eight Fast And Furious films. That made this ninth installment, F9, all the more disappointing. Granted, the whole premise of this handful of outside-the-law car nuts evolving from petty crooks and party animals to international espionage super studs, while still being societal outcasts, requires a hefty suspension of the ol’ disbelief. This chapter raises that particular ante beyond acceptable levels.
First of all, we learn how Dominic Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) father died. We also discover that he has a brother (John Cena) who’s never been mentioned in the first eight films, despite all of Dom’s blather about the “importance of family”, including significant roles in the early films for his sister...

Fans of the “Fast & the Furious” films (and Vin Diesel for that matter) may look upon F9: The Fast Saga with more fondness and love than others, but the truth is that it may be one of the most boring entries in the series to date.
The ninth chapter in the franchise begins as Dom Toretto (Diesel) is living the good (and quiet) life on a farm with Lefty (Michelle Rodriguez) and their son Brian. But, that idyllic, picturesque scene is quickly shattered when members of the old crew – Tej (Ludacris), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), and Ramsey (Mathalie Emmanuel) – drive up with news that Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) has sent a distress call after being ambushed transporting Cipher (Charlize Theron) by none other than Dom’s little brother Jakob (John Cena).

Helen Mirren will receive Chaplin Award Photo: Giles Keyte British actress Helen Mirren is to be honoured at the 45th Chaplin Award Gala next April. The star, who won an Oscar for her performance in The Queen, will receive the annual honour from the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York.
The 72-year-old, who received a BAFTA fellowship in 2014, joins previous winners of the award, including Robert De Niro, Bette Davis and Sidney Poitier, which was inaugurated in 1972, when Charlie Chaplin returned to the Us from exile to accept the commendation.
The society's board chairman Ann Tenenbaum said: “It is an honour and a pleasure for us to present Helen Mirren with our 45th Chaplin Award. From housemaid to Queen and everything in between, Ms. Mirren has delivered masterful performances of complex characters, upending stereotype after stereotype along the way.”

Kingsman: The Secret Service was a surprise in many ways, but possibly the biggest surprise was how goofy the film could be without losing its audience. It’s a solid movie that’s thoroughly entertaining, but it’s just wacko.
We’ve finally got a trailer for the sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and we’re apparently taking things up a few notches. Director Matthew Vaughn co-writes with Jane Goldman, and if nothing else, we’re expanding the world quite a bit. As you’ll see in the trailer, The Kingsman fall victim to someone, or some group of ones, who destroys all their favorite buildings. As Eggsy tries to cope, we have to imagine, he runs into America’s version of the organization, The Statesmen. If that weren’t enough, coupled with a lot of wild action scenes and general craziness, we get a shot of someone who is shockingly returning.

“The Martian” has been called “‘Cast Away’ on Mars” in various corners of the Internet, but it’s actually quite a different movie than the 2000 Tom Hanks film. Yes, Matt Damon’s astronaut is stranded in a place where he has little hope of surviving, but he approaches the extremely treacherous situation very differently from Hanks’ character. Damon’s character remains rather humorous, upbeat and optimistic in his time persevering to survive on the Red Planet. That optimism is largely what spoke to “The Martian” screenwriter Drew Goddard when he read the novel by Andy Weir that’s the basis for the film, which opened in theaters yesterday. Goddard (whose past credits include “The Cabin in the Woods,” “Lost” and “Buffy”) spoke to HitFix about the challenges of adapting a book with a lot of technical language, why he considers “The Martian” a “religious movie,” and which book moment that...

Ian McKellen is rather brilliantly everywhere these days, and while the apparently slow-moving spin on Sherlock Holmes may not be able to do battle with the summer blockbusters, Mr. Holmes looks like an impressive adventure for the actor.
The teaser trailer managed enough to give an idea of the film, but the new trailer fleshes out the character, how the new spin really works, and why the idea is so interesting.
Not only do we get a bit more of the relationship between an aging Holmes, and the young lad who apparently brings him out of his shell, we also get hints of the curious take on life as Holmes in a world that is all too familiar with Holmes.
Check this one out, and mark your calendars.

You’ve got to love the fact that Sherlock Holmes just isn’t going anywhere. Now, a new take on the subject with Mr. Holmes, starring Ian McKellan as the aging detective with one more case to work through.
Not quite the action-packed vehicle we’ve seen of late, but one that appears to be a little deceptive when it comes to how much is going on. At least, considering the trailer, which appears to show a Holmes with diminishing capacity, who does little more than tend to bees. Of course, that does actually describe the events of the film, to some degree, but there are hints that we’re in for something a lot more complicated, and if a movie is going to do the sleuth justice, we better be.
You can finally mark your calendars, as the film will hit July 17th, and be sure to catch the trailer below.

Chicago – I’m on board with Jude Law leading a film and neutral about submarine movies as a genre. My primary pre-screening interest in the quietly marketed thriller “Black Sea” was what Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald would do with this material following his hit with the hard-hitting drama “The Last King of Scotland”.
As it turns out, Jude Law as a desperate, angry and greedy skipper is not nearly as impactful as Forest Whitaker’s brutal Ugandan dictator. And “Black Sea,” which dives down to oceanic hull break point, isn’t propelled by nearly as deep of a story as the Oscar-winning Whitaker film.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
As for standing the test of time, “Black Sea” won’t. The film will not appear on favorite submarine film lists in the company of greats including “The Hunt for Red October,” “Crimson Tide,” “U-571,” “K-19: The Widow Maker,” “The Abyss” and “20,000 Leagues Under...

There is an ad for the movie Austenland that has been running in newspapers. The critic’s blurb urges readers to “Grab Your Girlfriends and Go!”
Don’t do this. She’s a reviewer for She Knows. She knows not. Neither does the marketing executive who thought this would be a persuasive pitch.
It’s understandable that said executive would assume Austenland is a “chick flick” a la Sex and the City, but that assumption would reveal he hadn’t seen the movie. It’s not a “chick flick,” nor is it entirely a “rom-com;” it’s simply a comedy, one that can be enjoyed by women and men.

Hunted centers on Sam Hunter (Melissa George), she’s an elite operative (meaning she can kick some serious butt) working in the private intelligence sector.
However, things go wrong on a mission, leaving Hunter critically injured. After disappearing off the intelligence radar for a year, she surprises her co-workers by returning to work – ready for action.
Here are 11 photos featuring the stars of Hunted: George, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Stephen Dillane, Stephen Campbell Moore, Patrick Malahide, Oscar Kennedy and Adam Rayner.
After Strike Back‘s Season 2 finale, the network aired a 10-minute advance preview of Hunted. This clip features some additional footage of Sam Hunter on a rescue mission.

Chicago – In the sure hands of director Lone Scherfig, the underrated film “An Education” brought Carey Mulligan to full light. Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess generate similar radiance in Scherfig’s new film, “One Day.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The narrative does apply some clichés of romantic comedies that could best have been avoided, but it also challenges those conventions with a shocking turn of events that deepens the emotional landscape. It is split into two halves, even though the more serious portion is only about a quarter of the proceedings. The low-key skill of Lone Scherig in mining new depths of purpose from her direction makes One Day a cut above the usual.
Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess) are university classmates who have a close encounter on graduation day. They agree to continue their friendship, and the date the story drops in on them is July 15th, depending on the events of the particular year.

Anne Hathaway knows you have your doubts about her, but she's ready to impress you with "One Day."
The actress is no stranger to adapting well-loved literature to the big screen, having starred in "The Princess Diaries" and "Brokeback Mountain." But having to speak in an English accent and co-helm a romance novel that fans were so protective of certainly put the pressure on when she was filming "One Day."
Fortunately, the response from fans has been positive so far. MTV News caught up with Hathaway and her co-star Jim Sturgess recently, and "The Dark Knight Rises" actress said that people have received her performance in the flick positively.

Chicago – Director Lone Scherfig has a rare delicate touch when it comes to portraying the subtlety of human relationships in films. After a triumph in 2009 directing Carey Mulligan in “An Education,” Scherfig returns with Anne Hathaway in the new film “One Day.”
Again, Lone Scherfig is a Danish director guiding an American actor (Hathaway) as a British character (she similarly worked that way with Peter Saarsgard in An Education). Both films feature women in transition having to do with relationships, but in One Day the story is as much about the male lead (Jim Sturgess) as Hathaway’s character.
The title One Day refers to July 15th, the designated day that Emma and Dexter (Hathaway and Sturgess) get together through the years from their college days to middle age. In that interim they experience many stages of their relationship, coming in and out of their coupling in various degrees of importance.

Giles Keyte / Focus Features Millions of readers have turned David Nicholls' romantic novel One Day into an international bestseller, published in 31 countries. Director Lone Scherfig (An Education) has taken Nicholls' screenplay adaptation to the big screen, with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess (The Way Back, Across the Universe) in the lead roles. Rounding out the cast are Patricia Clarkson, Romala Garai, and Rafe Spall, each in memorable cameos. One Day traces the lives of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew over the course of two decades, starting on the day of their college graduation in Edinburgh in midsummer 1988. We then check back in with the pair every July 15 (thus the title) - the date becomes the lens through which we learn about their ups, downs, careers and relationships. Will they ever find the right time to take their friendship to the next level? From its inception, the sprawling, tender novel...

Check out the new photos from director Lone Scherfig’s (An Education) motion picture One Day - adapted for the screen by David Nicholls from his bestselling novel One Day.
“The wit of David Nicholls’ writing appealed to me,” says One Day director Lone Scherfig. “But what compelled me was just how much of a real love story the piece is . and at a level you rarely come across.”
Film producer Nina Jacobson (The Hunger Games, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid), well-versed in recognizing books’ potential as movies and shepherding them to the screen, was struck by how much One Day affected her as she read it. She says, “I fell in love with the characters. The story is very universal. These characters, Emma and Dexter, and their journey truly speak to the way in which you transform after graduating from college and living your life; who you are then,...

Photo by Giles Keyte/IFC.If you’re a fan of David Cross, it’s going to be a busy month of TV watching. The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret, Cross’s latest attempt at being on a television show that isn’t unfairly cancelled, premiered last week on IFC and continues tomorrow night at 10:00 p.m. He also has a small role on the new Fox sitcom Running Wilde (Tuesdays at 9:30pm) which in the span of just three episodes has inspired a gamut of critical reaction from seething disparagement to lukewarm indifference. On the non-tv front, he released a new album in June, Bigger and Blackerer, and the paperback edition of his book, I Drink For a Reason, in August. That’s a lot of David Cross for your eyes and ears and brain. If the name David Cross doesn’t ring any bells, well,...

In Part Deux of our conversation with Shane Acker (for Part I, see here), the 9 director talks about his all-star vocal cast, the films and filmmakers that influenced the movie’s look and his relationship with Focus Features as a first-time feature director making a risky, more adult CG-animated film (which hits theaters, by design, 9/9/09).
In addition to a pair of big-name producers (directors Tim Burton & Timur Bekmambetov) to help guide 9 to completion, Acker managed to nab a quality voice cast that includes Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover. “We were trying to find actors who in some sense or essence best represented the characters in the film,” explains Acker (pictured working with Wood during a recording session). “We wanted a slightly more naturalistic approach to it as opposed to other animated films. We wanted the actors to speak in their regular voices,...
