Welcome to Valentine Bluffs, the little town with a big heart. Around those parts, though, that big heart might end up being stuffed inside a heart-shaped candy box by Harry Warden before February 14th is over and done with, but otherwise, it’s a great place to live.
As a kid, I only ever rented George Mihalka’s My Bloody Valentine once (for some dumb reason), and it was only until the remake was coming out in 2009 that I decided to rent it again, and was totally blown away, because 10-year-old Heather sure as hell didn’t appreciate just how great the original Mbv was and still is after all this time. One of those rare singular slashers that never made it into franchise territory, My Bloody Valentine is a pretty fantastic whodunit about a killer dressed up like a miner, similar to the M.O. of Harry Warden, a...

It’s that time of year for candy hearts, bouquets of roses, and, if you’re a fan of My Bloody Valentine, bloody pickaxes. The folks at Fright Rags certainly count themselves among the lattermost camp, and they’re paying tribute to the 1981 slasher film on February 8th with a new “Ballad of Harry Warden” apparel collection that would be right at home in Valentine Bluffs.
From Ben at Fright Rags: “Growing up, I was a fan of slasher movies more than any other of the various sub-genres of horror. If there was a deranged guy in a mask killing co-eds, I wanted to watch it. And goodness knows that the early 80s had their share of these films…

Horror fans are a unique sort of folk, because while many of us are the nicest & most generous, fun-loving people you’ll ever meet, we also delight in watching our fellow humans being massacred on TV and theater screens with alarming regularity. We deliriously cheer on the maniacs, monsters, and ill-mannered otherworldly visitors who make mincemeat out of our fictional peers, because that’s what we paid good money to see. And we’re usually less concerned with the so-called moral implications of such casually vicious entertainment than we are about how much soda or nacho chips we have left. I don’t wanna say we’re desensitized, necessarily… but we sure have grown to love our violent escapism. But what about those getting strangled, mangled, chopped up, beaten down, eaten, violently accosted, haunted, menaced, chased, threatened, and generally harassed at every turn? They do it all onscreen,...

In the small mining town of Valentine Bluffs things have not been the same since a freak mining accident claimed the lives of several men years before while the security was at the Annual Valentine's Day Dance. With a warning from one of the sole survivors of the accident never to hold the dance again, a group of local youngsters decide to hold the dance twenty years after the accident. Well needless to say (it is a slasher movie after all) on the eve of the Valentine's dance, people begin to be murdered by a killer disguised in a mining uniform and armed with a pick axe.
My Bloody Valentine was Canada's answer to the success of Friday the 13th and Halloween, and as the old cliche goes: Imitation is often the best form of flattery.

Miner that went crazy after being trapped in a mine for six weeks, as the result of his boss rushing to get to a Valentine's day dance, returns to his hometown decades later to kill those celebrating Valentine's Day.
Obviously a riff on John Carpenter's Halloween with the choice holiday switched from Halloween to Valentine's Day. My Bloody Valentine has it share of corny moments complete with some corny country western music and over exaggerated performances and attitudes that are supposed to convey small town living. My Bloody Valentine even has its share of soap opera moments that deal with the inner workings of a love triangle involving two guys vying for the attention of one woman complete with a dated music score that would be fitting in a soap opera sitcom. However, when...

Happy Valentine’s Day Bidite Nation!! We here at HorrorBid strive to bring out the horrors of all the holidays, and this one is no exception. I’m sure some of you have great quiet evenings planned with your loved one. Exchanging boxes of chocolates, arranging those roses so that they are just right, and even planning some intimate memories behind closed doors, all of these make Valentine’s Day truly special!...
Some, on the other hand, are just going to enjoy another night, one like every other. Dateless or not, you can still eat your own chocolate, light some candles, and even watch miners get slaughtered by Harry Warden in My Bloody Valentine. The question is which version do you watch? The 1981 Canadian version, or the 2009 American 3D one? Fear not fellow bidites! Today we will compare each film, so that in the end it will be clear as to which film to watch.

My Bloody Valentine (1982) D: George Mihalka. Paul Kelman, Neil Affleck, Lori Hallier. Holidays have long been prime fodder for slasher storytellers. From Black Christmas to Halloween to the dreadful Thankskilling, nary a festive day has been spared. Perhaps it's the juxtaposition of happy tidings with death and fear. Or maybe holiday parties are just a convenient excuse to gather teens together for slaughter. Probably the latter. In order to capitalize on the success of Friday the 13th, Paramount fired off a series of slasher clones, including My Bloody Valentine – conveniently...
