“We all have our own instincts. What we have to do is back up that instinct with something called craft,” explains Ron Howard in the trailer for his first ever online directing course, brought to you by MasterClass. In the class, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind “Apollo 13” and “A Beautiful Mind” will cover topics such as camera technique, casting, working with actors, evaluating ideas, and collaboration. From the nuggets of wisdom he drops in the trailer alone, this is one you won’t want to miss.
“You have to understand one thing about directing,” says Howard. “Every project you get involved with, ultimately, is just going to find its way to breaking your heart.”

Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip To Spain expands his foodie-humor franchise into a three-course experience. Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon first jested their way through northern England, then conquered Italy’s coastal delicacies while trading wits. So how does Winterbottom’s third helping measure up to previous cuts? With a bit more fat and gristle than hoped, overcooked until the comedic juices have all but dried out. That’s not to say a dash of Coogan and handfuls of Brydon fail to salvage this slab of comedy, but comparatively, Spain is the least appetizing trip so far.
Which, for the record, is like saying you prefer Gordon Ramsay and Anthony Bourdain to Thomas Keller. It’s still all gravy, baby.
Coogan and Brydon find themselves once again traveling afar, sampling native delicacies and writing about their exploits (Coogan through novelization, Brydon by critique). Spain’s landscape offers an abundance of seafood,...

The release this week of Jon Favreau’s Chef provides a new addition to the popular sub-genre of Food Cinema. From Eat, Drink, Man, Woman (1994) to Julia & Julia (2009), film directors have often created meals so mouth-watering that the thought of another handful of chewy, over-toffeed popcorn makes a mockery of one’s very soul.
Here then is the ultimate HeyUGuide to the ultimate Cine-Banquet, for any budding chefs out there to prepare for like-minded friends (please consult Alexander Payne’s Sideways for your wine selection).
Amuse-bouche: ‘Rillettes du Canard’ Red Dragon (2002)
“Hannibal, confess. What is this divine looking amuse-bouche?” Dr. Lecter is perhaps wise to keep back some of the secrets of the lavish banquet he has prepared for The Baltimore Opera Society. Few of them would suspect that the missing (and talentless) flutist from their own woodwind section is not just the ghost at the feast, but the key ingredient.

When this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony airs on HBO Saturday night, Rush, Heart, Public Enemy, Donna Summer and Randy Newman, among others, will be seen joining those already enshrined in the Cleveland museum. But one group that won't be represented, yet again, is the self-proclaimed "hottest band in the world," Kiss.
Longtime fans can't believe the group that taught America how to rock and roll all night and party every day still hasn't made the cut. The Huffington Post asked lead singer Paul Stanley if there's hope of a reprieve.
"Well, it depends on who lives longer, us or Jann Wenner," Stanley said, referring to the Rolling Stone editor-in-chief who co-founded the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in the mid-1980s.
Fans have a tendency to blame Wenner for the Kiss snub. (One brave loyalist even confronted Wenner on the street to demand answers.

Thomas Keller has finally taken the TV plunge.
The famed French Laundry chef is reportedly helping television producer Phil Rosenthal (of "Everybody Loves Raymond" fame) launch a food and travel reality show. The duo is currently in London filming the pilot.
Rosenthal and Keller exchanged tweets about the trip earlier this month. "Just started packing my bags for our trip next week," wrote Keller. "Have you?"
"Can't think of a better guide than @Chef_Keller," wrote Rosenthal. "I'm packing a big fork."
Later, Rosenthal posted pictures on his Facebook page with Keller at St. John and Murano restaurants in London.

Washington — Walk into any Sweetgreen restaurant and alongside your locally grown mesclun topped with organic dressing you're likely to get a helping of Hot Chips – the band, not the food.
"Music for us is part of our DNA," says Jonathan Neman, the 27-year-old co-founder of the Washington restaurant chain. In fact, he and his two partners care so much about the music that plays in their dozen locations, they personally crafted the playlists, creating eclectic blends that run from The Cure to today's British indie Blood Orange.
"When you're dining the food is important, the smell is important, the way it looks is important. And what you're listening to is important," he said.
Until recently, many restaurants were content to turn on the radio or let the manager fire up his iPod. But for a growing number of foodies and restaurateurs, what's on the playlist is almost as important as what's on the menu.

I do not know if it will be playing in theaters before theatrical prints of Straw Dogs or whether it was just something to get the film critics/pundits excited.
The footage is basically a primer for those completely unfamiliar with the franchise. We meet the main characters, we see Christopher Plummer lay out the primary mystery, and we get a look at our heroes in action, both when on the case and on their own time. First and foremost, let me just say that the footage looks absolutely breathtaking. While the pallette of choice is dark (think grey skies), there is a haunting and epic feel to the film that arguably surpasses its TV-movie of the week subject matter.
