- Nikos Kavvadias was born in 1910 in Harbin, Manchuria. His parents were Greeks and when he was very young they returned to their homeland. From his early years he started to write and eventually became a significant poet in Greece. He published three collections of poetry: "Marabou" (1933), "Pousi" (1947) and "Traverso" (1975). He also published "Vardia" (novel, 1954) and "Tou Polemou kai Li" (short stories, 1987-after his death). "Li" is the story that the scenario of "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" is based upon. He died on February 10th 1975.
