Several usual suspects -- "30 Rock," "Mad Men," "The Office," "The Simpsons" -- picked up multiple nominations for the 2010 Writers Guild of America Awards -- but a couple of new shows broke through too.
"Glee" and "Modern Family" are both up for best comedy and best new series at the guild's awards, which will be presented Feb. 20. "Modern Family" also picked up an episodic comedy nomination for its pilot, written by series creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd.
The other comedy series nominees are "30 Rock," "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Office." For drama series, the contenders are "Breaking Bad," "Dexter," "Friday Night Lights," "Lost" and "Mad Men." Someone from "The Simpsons" will win in the animation category, as its writers swept all five nominations.
Below is a partial list of the nominees in the TV and radio categories (movie nominations will be announced later). The complete list is at WGA.org. »

The Pastors are attached to direct the project mounted by GreeneStreet Films and Civil Dawn Pictures' Ross Katz and Fred Berger. - Nice to see that filmmaking brother duo David and Alex Pastor haven't been eradicated from business - their first feature film made less than 100 grand at the box office - Paramount Vantage pulled Carriers after one week in theaters. The Pastors are attached to direct the project mounted by GreeneStreet Films and Civil Dawn Pictures' Ross Katz and Fred Berger. Strange, but True is based on John Searles' offbeat mystery novel that begins when a teenager's girlfriend arrives at his family's home five years after his death insisting that she is pregnant with his child. Sort of sounds like Shana Feste' The Greatest put without the shrouded in mystery component. Eric Garcia penned the screenplay. David Pastor mentioned to Variety that the screenplay »

In May of 2007, I was in pre-production on a film I had co-written and would direct, Taking Chance. All of the usual pre-production mayhem was ensuing. Where to shoot? How can we access all of these airport tarmacs (note to self: next time don't write a movie with so many airports!). Who was the crew we would hire? How could we make this incredibly aggressive shooting schedule? In one short moment, every one of those questions were sucked from my mind. You see, the impossible work of making a movie had proven to be a force field for me. A natural way for me to stay so distracted with the nuts and bolts, that I need not face the overwhelming, gut-wrenching emotion that was lurking within me. This was the story of a brave, magnificent Marine, LtCol Michael R. Strobl, Usmc (Ret.). LtCol Strobl co-wrote the screenplay (he's a brilliant writer), but more daunting, »

Today is Veteran's Day, a day set aside to remember and honor those who served our country. I am personally deeply grateful to our troops and delighted to share highlights from three of this year's films that are moving tributes to our military.
"Taking Chance" is a riveting, unforgettable film directed by Ross Katz that stars Kevin Bacon and pays tribute to the sacrifice of a 19 year old Marine killed in Iraq. The movie is one of the most powerful and moving films I've ever seen. Based on the real-life experience of Lt. Col. Michael Strobl and the essay he wrote to remember his journey, "Taking Chance" follows Bacon (Lt. Col Strobl) who volunteers to escort the remains of a young Marine killed in Iraq across the country to his family. It is a simple story, yet an amazingly powerful film that showcases the dedication, professionalism and commitment of our »

Author John Searles has only written two novels, but already his second, Strange but True, has been picked up for the big screen treatment. And, continuing our theme of "two", it will be the sophomore directorial project of Spanish brothers Alex and David Pastor, whose debut, Carriers, was somewhat mishandled by Paramount Vantage.
Let's hope they have better luck with Ross Katz and Fred Berger’s Civil Dawn Pictures and John Penotti and Tim Williams’ GreeneStreet Films, the production team behind Strange.
Per Variety, the screenplay is being co-written by Searles and novelist Eric Garcia. Strange centers on a young woman who, five years after the death of her boyfriend, tells his parents she is pregnant with his baby. "It’s a dramatic thriller with a big heart in the line of 'Fargo' and 'A Simple Plan'," Alex Pastor told the trade.

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.

Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as »
