We all know that Sundance is a welcoming launchpad for first-time filmmakers — and this was indeed the case for Daniel Minahan who shored up all the way in 2001 with Series 7: The Contenders. a gnarly comedy noir thriller that reminds us of The Running Man. Almost a quarter of a century later and tons of television series work later, the filmmaker might bring On Swift Horses — a period piece item featuring strained relationships, horses, gambling and the likes of Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Elordi and Will Poulter. Written by Bryce Kass (Lizzie), production took place in at the beginning of the year in.…...

Andrew Garfield is heading for the stars. Reports indicate the Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hacksaw Ridge actor Andrew Garfield is playing astronomer Carl Sagan in Voyagers, a new film from Sebastian Lelio. In addition to Garfield, Daisy Edgar-Jones joins the cast as Cosmos filmmaker Ann Druyan. The project is going to the Cannes market this month, courtesy of FilmNation Entertainment.
The Voyagers story takes place in 1977 at NASA, where Sagan’s team is preparing to launch humanity’s first interstellar probes. The launch includes a message from the team responsible for the monumental devices, dubbed The Golden Record. Colette (Wash Westmoreland)
Keira Knightley is back in her beloved genre, the period piece, for Colette, and it looks to be one of her strongest roles. The story of the famous French author finds her trying to balance her newfound success, her exploration of her sexuality, and a marriage to her dominating husband Willy (Dominic West). Coming from Still Alice co-director Wash Westmoreland, whose husband and co-director Richard Glatzer passed away in 2015, Colette is now on VOD following a fall theatrical release and acclaim from Sundance.
Where to Stream: Amazon, iTunes, Google
Inception (Christopher Nolan)
Inception is an arthouse movie with blockbuster aspirations. Or perhaps it’s the other way around.

The tale of Lizzie Borden has been told in rhyme and on screen before. In 1975, Elizabeth Montgomery led TV movie The Legend of Lizzie Borden. The less said of 2013’s “nude film” Lizzie Borden’s Revenge, the better. Finally, in 2014, Christina Ricci played the titular tool wielder in Lizzie Borden Took an Ax, followed by a series. After these average to abysmal affairs, director Craig William Macneill (The Boy) and screenwriter Bryce Kass have fashioned what’s close to a prestige feature, and the first big screen film version of Borden’s bloody tale.
Instead of lazily charting the pre-trodden path from a grimy, exploitative perspective, Kass crafts multifaceted characters, fortified by disturbing family drama and taut plotting. These, when mined under Macneill’s burrowing eye, and with outstanding performances, make Lizzie (the film) a disquieting, absorbing and unforgettable drama/thriller, topped with the obligatory mum and dad hacking.

Lizzie Borden and the gruesome murders of her parents remain in the public imagination, due in part to that memorable childhood rhyme about 40 whacks. Andrew and Abby Borden were found brutally murdered in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts on August 4, 1892, when no one else was there except Lizzie and a servant girl. Yet Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the murders, partly because the jury just could not believe that such a well-brought up young lady from a respectable family could possibly have committed such a horrible crime.
Over the years, there have been lots of theories about what happened that day. Lizzie is a psychological thriller that tells one possible version, one that delves into the family dynamics within the Borden family and the restrictive lives of women in that patriarchal era,...

The morning of August 4, 1892, Lizzie Borden discovered the bodies of her father and stepmother who had been axed to death in their house. She went on to become the prime suspect in the murders, and even though she was eventually acquitted, history turned her into a folk tale used to instill fear in little children who shudder at the idea of her cursed axe. How could it not? After all, Borden became the embodiment of everything a woman was not supposed to be: wealthy, outspoken and unmarried.
In Lizzie, director Craig William Macneill and screenwriter Bryce Kass don’t attempt to further acquit her, but sticking to the idea that Borden indeed murdered her parents, they create a feminist case for her. Not that murder is justifiable of course, but rather than focusing on Lizzie as a figure out of a horror movie or creepy folk tale, she is portrayed...

A lesbian spin on the legendary Lizzie Borden murder case is nothing new — Ed McBain posited the notion in a 1984 novel — but the stylish and haunting “Lizzie” paints a provocative portrait of a woman driven by passions and left with few options in a society that gave her little agency.
In “Lizzie,” we come to know Borden’s inner turmoil, not only by her periodic “spells” but also in the way that the camera captures a bewitching Chloë Sevigny. She’s often off-center in the frame, or reflected in mirrors, or out of focus in the foreground as she imagines what’s happening far behind her.
Screenwriter Bryce Kass (“Outlaw Prophet: Warren Jeffs”) and director Craig William Macneill (2015’s “The Boy”), like everyone else who has tackled this story, are left to their own conjectures and theories as to the how and the why behind the murder of Borden’s father and stepmother,...

Filmmaker Craig William Macneill hasn’t been one to shy away from creating compelling, layered characters led by their darker impulses, and his latest feature, Lizzie, is another startling reminder of how isolation can drive people to do terrible things. Starring Chloë Sevigny in the titular role, and featuring a talented ensemble that includes Kristen Stewart, Fiona Shaw, Jamey Sheridan, and Denis O’Hare, Lizzie doesn’t dawdle on the shocking events that transpired that fateful day when Mr. and Mrs. Borden were brutally murdered with an axe—instead, it turns its focus inward on Lizzie and how the repressive society she was brought up in caused her to live a life of isolation and bottled-up rage.
Daily Dead recently caught up with Macneill for a Q&A in honor of Lizzie’s release this Friday via Saban Films and Roadside Attractions, and he discussed what drew him to the project,...

“Bisbee ’17” (September 5)
On July 12, 1917, nearly 2,000 striking miners — most of them Eastern European and Mexican immigrants — were rounded up by their deputized friends and neighbors, herded onto cattle cars, and abandoned in the middle of nowhere. Known as the Bisbee Deportation, this traumatic event has since benefited from an impressive act of collective forgetting, as many of the locals are descendants of those responsible and would rather ignore (or erase) that chapter of the history books. “Kate Plays Christine” filmmaker Robert Greene wasn’t going to let them do that. Lizzie Borden took and axe and, well, maybe. We don’t actually see the deed in this chilling new trailer for Craig William Macneill’s Sundance Fest hit Lizzie starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, but we do get a Lizzie who can wield a wicked retort.
Asked by an interrogator whether her murdered father had enemies, Sevigny’s Lizzie responds, “This is America, sir. Every man with a pulse has enemies.”
Co-starring Jamey Sheridan as Borden patriarch Andrew Borden, Lizzie, judging by this footage, certainly doesn’t shy from speaking ill of the slaughtered. We see a sinister Andrew Borden abusing family maid Bridget Sullivan (Stewart), smacking around Lizzie and slaughtering what seems to be Lizzie’s pet pigeon.
The trailer also portrays the developing intimate relationship between Lizzie and Bridget. Maybe more than one woman took an axe and handed out those 41 whacks?

Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, Lizzie is a period drama with a dark twist, and it’s all based on a true story. Starring Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, we won’t dive fully into what the said twist is, in case you haven’t been privy to the real story by glancing at Wikipedia, but rest assured, it made for a divisive response upon its premiere.
Directed by Craig William Macneill and scripted by Bryce Kass, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of a release next month from Roadside Attractions, which shows off Sevigny and Stewart’s characters forming a deadly bond. Also starring Jamey Sheridan, Fiona Shaw, Kim Dickens, Denis O’Hare and Jeff Perry, see the trailer below.

For nearly a decade, actress and producer Chloe Sevigny dreamed of bringing one of America’s best-known tales to the big screen, a Lizzie Borden biopic that delves deep into the psyche and motivations of the notorious (alleged) axe murderer. What became “Lizzie” — directed by Craig William Macneill — bowed at the Sundance Film Festival this past weekend, featuring Sevigny as the infamous maybe-murderer, with Kristen Stewart in a restrained supporting role as the Borden family housekeeper that Lizzie falls in love with. But it’s not the film Sevigny always dreamed of.
In a revealing new interview with HuffPost, Sevigny opened up about the long process to get the film made, and why Macneill’s final product isn’t exactly what she envisioned for all those years. Originally imagined as a miniseries scripted by Sevigny’s long-time friend Bryce Kass, the pair first took the project to HBO, home of Sevigny’s “Big Love,...

Before walking into this movie, the only thing I knew about Lizzie Borden was that she murdered her parents. But in Lizzie, director Craig William Macneill (The Boy, Channel Zero) and screenwriter Bryce Kass offer a different take on the still-unsolved killings that totally rewrites Lizzie’s narrative, casting her as a righteous heroine instead of […]

The murders have already been committed by the time Craig William Macneill’s “Lizzie” opens, two bodies lying dead in the cursed Borden family home in Fall River, Massachusetts, a shell-shocked Lizzie Borden (Chloe Sevigny) being questioned by the police, and a terrified young maid (Kristen Stewart) milling at the corners. A revisionist take on a classic American legend that’s already gotten plenty of revisionist takes (the Lifetime channel alone made one film that proved so popular that the cable outfit turned it into an entire limited series), Sevigny’s longtime passion project infuses new insight into the story of Borden and her 40 whacks, but a listless quality keeps it from exploding into the kind of drama necessary for a story rooted in so much rage.

Some spoilers for “Lizzie” ahead.
Leave it to Chloe Sevigny and her long-time passion project “Lizzie” to unleash the first truly jaw-dropping scene of Sundance 2018. In Craig William Macneill’s take on the 1892 murders of Abby and Andrew Borden, long believed to be at the hand of Andrew’s daughter Lizzie (Sevigny), the infamous American criminal (she wasn’t ever convicted, but the court of public opinion is another matter) gets the chance to redraw her own history and motivations.
While Macneill’s film, which premiered at the Library theater on Friday night at Sundance, opens with the murders already completed in seriously bloody fashion, it then flashes back to the six months leading up to the horrific deaths. By the time Andrew and Abby bite it, Macneill and Sevigny, aided by Bryce Kass’ script, have made a strong case for why Lizzie did what she (might have) done, motivated...

Lizzie Borden took an axe / And gave her mother forty whacks / When she saw what she had done / She gave her father forty-one.
The story of Lizzie Borden and the brutal murder of her father and stepmother has long been one of early America’s signature — and very bloody — folk tales, and one that has inspired scads of adaptations for both the stage and screen, including a 1965 opera and a recent Lifetime made-for-tv movie and its subsequent limited series sequel, both starring Christina Ricci as the accused murderer.

But popular culture isn’t done with Lizzie yet, and a new film from “The Boy” director Craig William Macneill and newbie screenwriter Bryce Kass (he previously penned the 2014 TV movie “Outlaw Prophet: Warren Jeffs”) looks to revisit the enduring tale, with a brand new twist.
