The restored version of Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal’s 1976 masterpiece “Manthan” (“The Churning”) is screening at the Cannes Film Festival’s Cannes Classics strand.
Shot by DoP Govind Nihalani in rural Gujarat, western India, the film is produced by 500,000 farmers who contributed towards its making, under the banner Gujarat Milk Co-Op Marketing Federation Ltd. The film is a fictionalized version of the beginnings of the dairy cooperative movement that transformed India from a milk-deficient nation to the world’s largest milk producer, inspired by Dr. Verghese Kurien. It also examines issues like caste, class, gender and economic discrimination. The cast includes Girish Karnad, Smita Patil, Anant Nag, Mohan Agashe and Naseeruddin Shah.

The title of Girish Kasaravalli's 1977 film "Ghatashraddha" is directly translated as "The Ritual," although the on-screen English title is "Ritual of Excommunication." Both titles reflect the bleak circumstances of the film's protagonist, even though "The Ritual" implies that women are abused and discarded as a matter of course. "Ghatashraddha" is a bleak tragedy about a woman named Yamuna (Meena Kuttappa) who lives with her religious schoolteacher father (Ramaswamy Iyengar) and who is already a widow at a young age. Yamuna is already seeing another man, also a schoolteacher, although their affair is secret ... as is her pregnancy. The only person who treats Yamuna with any friendliness is a young boy named Naani (Ajith Kumar), who serves as a witness to the story.
When her father goes out of town to raise money for his school, everything falls apart. The school deteriorates, gossip begins to spread, and Yamuna becomes an outcast.

Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and the Film Heritage Foundation (Fhf) have partnered to restore Girish Kasaravalli’s seminal Indian film “Ghatashraddha”.
The landmark Kannada-language film is based on a novella by litterateur U.R. Ananthamurthy that left a deep impression on Kasaravalli when he read it in high school. Set in southern India, the film describes the ostracism of a young woman who transgresses the rigid sexual code of the orthodox society. It follows Yamuna, a child widow living with her father in the religious school which he runs. Seduced and made pregnant by the teacher of the local government school, Yamuna attempts suicide but is rescued by a young student of her father’s with whom she has a deep affection. She agrees to an abortion and is made an outcast by her father, who performs a funeral ritual for his still-living daughter. In this rite, an earthen pot, symbol of fertility,...

The late Govindan Aravindan’s 1978 masterpiece “Thamp̄” (“The Circus Tent”) is one of two Indian films at this year’s Cannes Classics selection, alongside Satyajit Ray’s “Pratidwandi” (“The Adversary”) from 1970.
“Thamp̄” was painstakingly restored by India’s Film Heritage Foundation (Fhf), an organization founded by filmmaker Shivendra Singh Dungarpur in 2014. Dungarpur facilitated the restoration of Uday Shankar’s landmark film “Kalpana” (1948) by Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation, the restored version of which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. He also collaborated with the World Cinema Foundation again for the restoration of the 1972 Sinhalese film “Nidhanaya” directed by eminent Sri Lankan filmmaker Lester James Peries. “Pedro”, the interesting debut feature of a young Kannada director Natesh Hegde, is an engaging glimpse into a closed rural community of a village located amidst Western Ghat’s dense forest. It drifts away from the usual slice-of-life documentarian style of this type of tale toward intimate psychodrama and introspective portrayal of a character, whose passiveness, alienation, and apathy are largely anti-heroic.
“Pedro” is screening at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles
Pedro is a middle-aged electrician, doing odd contracted jobs, who lives with his mother, sister-in-law, and her little son in a cramped house. He replaced his estranged brother, a troublemaking feisty drunkard, as the head of a family, and the former often bangs at the door, manifesting his anger and shouting his frustration off. Pedro’s looks are ordinary, he hardly ever speaks, and drinks a bit too much, like most of the males he knows. Despite a...

Cinemapreneur is a pay-per-view Ott with a library of independent films available to stream online globally.
India has made its mark in world cinema with the work of talented filmmakers like Chaitanya Tamahe, which recently got into the list of competing films for the Venice International Film Festival. However Indian independent films remain limited to festivals as avenues for a proper release and monetization are localised and few. A traditional release through theatres is very expensive and it’s tougher for small-budget films to find a place in major Ott platforms. Many are available for viewing outside India but there is a lack of spaces within the country itself which can take these films to the right audience.
To change this, Cinemapreneur decided to launch an online pay-per-view platform exclusively for Indian independent films. While the Ott was being set up, they also organised offline screenings for films like Achal...

This was not only because acclaimed movies from the rest of the world were being screened, but also because, after a gap of nine years, the master filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli’s new film Illiralaare Allige Hogalaare (Confined Hither... Can't go Thither) was premiering. The Kannada new wave champion was present to greet the audience and introduce the cast and crew of the film at the screenings. When asked about the unusual time gap in a conversation over phone, Kasaravalli says, “I was disappointed with the way my last film (Koormavatara) was treated. Despite winning awards at many film festivals across the world, it did not receive much support in Karnataka.

SandalwoodWhile single screen theatres are not profitable for small films, multiplexes offer a very short window to decide a film's success.D Meera ChithirappaavaiThe Kannada film industry boasts itself as one of the very few industries that produce a good ratio of parallel/bridge/experimental cinema to that of mainstream commercial cinema. While its experimental films are usually way ahead of their time, the mass entertainers or the commercial flicks, as they are known, lack relevance when compared to the other industries. A huge part of the credit for the growth of experimental cinema goes to legendary filmmakers like Puttanna Kanagal, Girish Kasaravalli, P Sheshadri and the set of new wave filmmakers like Pawan Kumar, Rakshith Shetty and others. However, despite the quality and quantity of experimental films in Kannada, the going isn't easy for filmmakers who want to make such cinema. Nfdc Film Bazaar is introducing a new segment for films in need of gap financing this year. Eighteen projects will be pitched to potential investors to find finishing funds at the first Investor Pitch in Goa this year.

Here prospective investors can get to watch full films,” says Deepti DCunha, the curator of Investor Pitch.
In order to try out the idea, Nfdc invited selected filmmakers from the Viewing Room section last year for a pitching forum. Filmmakers were asked to showcase the trailers and talk about their films for about five minutes.

After loss of the print of Alam Ara and many other classics, a Film Heritage Foundation has now been set up by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, a popular filmmaker and film archivist. Manish Tewari
A delegation of independent filmmakers represented by Onir, Anusha Rizvi and Shonali Bose will meet the Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari today with the “Save Indie Cinema” Petition jointly filled by 45 award winning film makers and signed by about 10,000 people.
The petition seeks to address the threats that New Wave Indie Cinema of India faces today. One of the concerns of indie filmmakers is non availability of resources to exhibit their films. “High ticket pricing that is inappropriate for small budget films, inadequate number of shows and odd show timings further destroy the possibility of Indie cinema (regional and Hindi) to have any proper chance at being viewed. It defies logic that a 150 Crores film and a 1.5 crore film are priced by the multiplexes in the same manner,” reads the petition.

“Why should P.K.Nair not be a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award? After all, whatever we have of Phalke’s Raja Harishchandra, meaning just the first and last reels of the film, are there due to Nair’s unwavering vision and his endless efforts. Again, the only complete Phalke film available to us, namely, Kaliya Mardan (1919), is there because of Nair. If someone like him is not deserving of the Phalke Award, one wonders, who is?”

A Still from Kurmavatara
The preoccupations and the creative base of all the films of Girish Kasaravalli lie not only in capturing the tensions and anxieties of a community, but also in seeking ethical alternatives to the crises of an era. Many symbols are created in this process of capturing and seeking. The anxiety of each period of time gives birth to a conducive and correlating symbol. Such symbols that portray the spirit of the times are found in all films of Girish Kasaravalli. One can observe this from Ghatashraddha to Kurmavatara. In other words, a symbol which emerges in a specific period of time reveals the ideological, philosophical problems of that time. We must note that the symbols that appear before us are problematic ones. They are not emblems or unidimensional truths. Kurmavatara is a text which seeks to understand the inner self of Gandhi with openness.

The Tortoise, an Incarnation directed by Girish Kasaravalli will have its international premiere in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the Toronto International Film Festival 2012.
“In Girish Kasaravalli’s gently philosophical character piece, a humble, low-level civil servant cast as the lead in a popular TV serial chronicling the life of Gandhi finds uncanny echoes between his own life and that of the legendary leader — and sets out to correct their mutual failings,” is the synopsis of the film in an official press release.
Shambhavi Kaul’s 21 Chitrakoot, and Shumona Goel and Shai Heredia’s I Am Micro will be screened as part of ‘Wavelengths’, the festival’s curated presentation of the best in international avant-garde film and video.
“..Equally uncanny and visually enthralling is Shambvani Kaul’s 21 Chitrakoot, which exhumes a mystical land composed of 1980s chroma-key backdrops from a famous Indian television series. With barely tempered chaos, melancholia replaces nostalgia,...

The result is exciting, to say almost nothing, and should serve as a good takeoff point for the adventurous.
A crucial detail about the original Agneepath, starring Amitabh Bachchan and directed by Mukul Anand: It’s insane. Made during the limbo between Amitabh Bachchan’s infamous career in politics and his equally unsuccessful foray into film production, the film...
