GÖTEBORG, Sweden — Established Nordic prodco Sagafilm is producing Icelandic crime series “Sisterhood,” in association with Sky Studios, for commissioners Nent Group’s Nordic streamer Viaplay and Iceland’s Ott service Síminn.

Exclusive: Icelandic companies plan joint slate of Icelandic and English-language films including Óskar Jónasson’s Habeus Corpus.
Icelandic production companies Truenorth and Mystery are partnering on an ambitious slate of eight films to be shot over the next five years.
“Both companies were looking to expand into more European co-productions so we decided to join forces,” said Kristinn Thordarson, head of production at Truenorth.
David Oskar Olafsson of Mystery added that the slate’s eight productions are five in English and three in Icelandic.
“We had the same goals and ambitions,” Olafsson said “By joining teams, we felt we could be working on broader profile films.”
Leifur B Dagfinnsson of Truenorth said that both companies would continue to work on their own projects as well as the joint slate, and they would continue to have separate offices in Reykjavik.
The plan is to have eight to 10 films on the joint slate continually.

The funny thing about reviewing films not in the English language is that it can be all too easy to assume that just because you’re reading subtitles, you’re watching a work of major artistic quality. This can simply be because somewhere in your mind you make the equation ‘subtitles = clever’, or in slightly more complex terms, why would distributors bother releasing a film in a foreign territory if there wasn’t something special about it that will attract an audience?
Reykjavík-Rotterdam is an Icelandic thriller about a former smuggler who takes on ‘one last job’ when faced with considerable financial difficulties. The thing is, whilst it’s a fairly competent film in its own right, it’s not really clear what makes it stands out from your...

Ben Foster, Contraband According to Deadline.com, this four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend the North American box office could reach $165 million — or up about 4% compared to last year. Considering the disappointing returns in late 2011, a modest increase is good news indeed for the jittery Hollywood studios. Helping things out are the Mark Wahlberg crime thriller Contraband, which earned an estimated $9 million on Friday and may reach $30 million by Monday evening. Box Office Mojo was expecting the film to bring in only $18.5 million. Anyhow, if those early estimates are correct, that's a solid start for a movie that reportedly cost $25 million (not including marketing/distribution expenses). A remake of Óskar Jónasson's 2008 Icelandic hit Reykjavik-Rotterdam, Contraband was directed by Baltasar Kormákur, the original film's star-producer. In addition to Wahlberg Contraband features Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi, Diego Luna, Ben Foster, Lukas Haas, Caleb Landry Jones, and J.K. Simmons. Disney's 3D-ification of...

Five new preview clips from Mark Wahlberg's new action-thriller, Contraband, have been released online. A remake of Icelandic writer-director Óskar Jónasson's 2008 thriller Reykjavík-Rotterdam, Contraband was directed by Baltasar Kormákur, who also starred in and produced the award-winning original.
In the movie, Wahlberg plays Chris Farraday, a former smuggler who is trying hard to walk the straight and narrow path. However, when his brother-in-law (Caleb Landry Jones) runs into trouble with a drug lord (Giovanni Ribisi), Farraday is forced to run contraband in order to try to settle his debts. As detailed in the preview clips, Farraday's decision to return to crime not only lands him in hot water with the drug lord, but also with the police and with his wife (Kate Beckinsale), who fears he will end up in prison or dead, leaving her to raise their sons on her own. Ben Foster, J.K. Simmons, and Lukas Haas also star.

At first glance, Contraband might seem a bit like The Town meets Taken, as a former criminal turned straight is forced to do one last job in order to protect his family. As it turns out, the movie is yet another remake of a hit foreign language film: Óskar Jónasson's Reykjavík-Rotterdam. Strangely, in this case it is the original Icelandic film's lead actor Baltasar Kormákur who has taken the reins for the U.S. version. Mark Wahlberg stars as Chris Farraday, a legendary drug runner who has tried to clean up his act. When his brother-in-law Danny (Caleb Landry Jones) flubs a deal for ruthless crime boss Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi), Chris assembles a team with the help of his buddy Sebastian (Ben Foster) in order to make things right. With a cast that also includes Kate Beckinsale, Diego Luna and J.K. Simmons, and a group of smugglers who...

Details are still sketchy, but Latino Review are reporting that Kate Beckinsale has come aboard Contraband, the newly-monikered remake of Reykjavik-Rotterdam.The project was announced a year or so ago, with Mark Wahlberg producing and Baltasar Kormákur, who starred in the original, replacing Óskar Jónasson as director. The story revolves around a former smuggler turned security guard, lured back to the wrong side of the law when he finds himself in tricky financial straits: a plan that goes south when violent drug dealers get involved and his family is threatened. The original film won several Edda awards in its native Iceland, and was the country's submission in 2008 for the Best Foreign-Language Oscar, although it didn't end up bagging a nomination. The Working Title remake (with the name-change prompted by a shift in location, like what we predicted) has been adapted from the original by Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners). Wahlberg will play...

Mark Walhberg has signed up to star in a remake of an Icelandic film we haven't even seen yet, Reykjavik-Rotterdam, a thriller that's Iceland's submission to this year's Oscars. The remake's expected to relocate the action elsewhere, so be prepared for a possible title change there when this one becomes geographically misleading. The film centres on Christopher (well, Kristófer really), a former alcohol smuggler (what with the price of booze in Iceland being crazy-high) turned security guard who is lured back into the business by a dubious friend after he gets himself into a financial pickle. But of course it's not that easy: cue involvement with a violent drug dealer and danger for Christopher's family as well as himself. The original was directed by Óskar Jónasson, but this version will be directed by the star of the original, Baltasar Kormákur. Prisoners writer Aaron Guzikowski is on scripting duties, and will...

Oscar-nominated actor Mark Wahlberg, who recently starred in "Max Payne," is taking a trip to "Reykjavik-Rotterdam," Working Title's remake of Óskar Jónasson's 2008 Icelandic thriller of the same title.
The story follows a security guard and ex alcohol smuggler who considers returning to the illegal business after he runs into financial trouble. Aaron Guzikowski ("Prisoners") will write the script.
The Hollywood Reporter says Baltasar Kormákur, who starred in the original "Reykjavik," is in talks to direct the remake. The accalimed original film is Iceland's entry for the upcoming Oscars foreign film race.

Mark Wahlberg has signed on to star in Reykjavik-Rotterdam, a remake of an Icelandic thriller that has been set up at Working Title, according to THR tonight. The original film, directed by Óskar Jónasson, was released in 2008. Baltasar Kormakur, who produced and starred in the original, is attached to direct the English-language remake. And Aaron Guzikowski, who wrote the spec script Prisoners, is writing the new remake script. The plot centers on a security guard and former alcohol smuggler on the Iceland-Netherlands route who is tempted back into illicit business by a dubious friend after encountering financial problems. The original Reykjavik-Rotterdam is Iceland's submission for this year's Foreign Language Oscar race and won five of that country's film awards previously. The English version likely will be relocated to other places rather than Reykjavik, which is the capitol if Iceland, and Rotterdam, a port city on the edge of Holland. Baltasar...

Berlin -- Baltasar Kormakur's "White Night Wedding," a matrimonial comedy loosely based on Chekhov's "Ivanov," was the big winner at Iceland's Edda Awards, the country's top film honors, taking seven trophies, including best picture.
"White Night Wedding" also is Iceland's official candidate in the foreign-language Oscar race.
The other multiple winner at Tuesday night's Edda ceremony was Oskar Jonasson's thriller "Reykjavik-Rotterdam," which earned five awards, including best director.
Kormakur plays the lead in "Reykjavik-Rotterdam," further evidence that this young multihyphenate, who had his breakthrough with 2000's "Reykjavik 101," is quickly becoming Iceland's one-man film industry.

Director Óskar Jónasson is mostly known here in Iceland as a comedy director, having made the film Sódóma Reykjavík (Remote Control) in the early 90’s that shot him up to fame and the film has become a true comedy classic over here. He followed that up with another comedy and then went on to direct some of the more popular comedy sketch shows over here. So it came as a surprise that he was writing and slated to direct a straight thriller, co-written by the author of Jar City, Arnaldur Indriðason and starring the director of that film Baltasar Kormákur and even the lead actor Ingvar E. Sigurðsson (it’s a small country).
Now Icelandic thrillers do not have what you would call a rosy history. All past attempts have failed miserably so when Jar City came along and showed us that it could be done, if you put your mind to it,...
