Every makeup effect has a story behind it, but even more fascinating are the stories behind the makeup effects artists themselves. For years, Heather Wixson has shared her passion for the horror genre as the Managing Editor on Daily Dead, and we couldn't be more thrilled by the official release of her new book, Monster Squad, a celebration of practical effects artists and their incredible creations that made so many of us believe in the magic of movies and gave us nightmare fuel forever.
Now available from BearManor Media, Monster Squad: Celebrating the Artists Behind Cinema's Most Memorable Creatures shines a light on the artists who have worked tirelessly in the shadows behind the camera to create the jaw-dropping creatures that have haunted big screens and warmed our hearts.

The French Open second round win for American tennis star Steve Johnson was a bittersweet one.
The 25th-seed, who recently lost his father Steve Johnson Sr., had trouble containing his raw emotion after saving two set points in the fourth-set tiebreak to beat Borna Coric 6-2, 7-6(8), 3-6, 7-6(6).
After the victory, Johnson sunk to his knees, tears in his eyes.
His late father, a well-regarded tennis coach from Southern California, unexpectedly passed away in his sleep at the age of 58 just three weeks ago.
“I just miss my dad,” Johnson said after the match.

Scream Factory has released Bad Moon to Blu-ray, and they’ve included both the theatrical cut, as well as the rarer director’s cut. I don’t want to oversell it, this isn’t Nightbreed, the director’s cut of Bad Moon actually clocks in at a few seconds less than the theatrical. That I can tell, the only difference throughout the entire film is that transformation scene, which really makes little difference. The werewolf genre is criminally unappreciated in the first place, and a lot of the really good ones are just obscure enough that they never really capture the attention of the mainstream. Bad Moon is a solid werewolf movies. And Scream Factory has released the most complete version to date.

The greatest movies never made is up for debate. Depending on your cinematic oeuvre, you might be more inclined to champion Vincent Ward’s ‘wooden planet’ concept for Alien 3. Or Joss Whedon’s Wonder Woman. For some fans, there’s only one unmade movie to contest. A movie that over the years has accrued such mystery and intrigue that the story of its unmaking has now been turned into a documentary: The Death Of Superman Lives: What Happened?

Prince William and Kate surprised commuters at a London tube station Thursday when they visited volunteers raising money for war veterans. They took a specially chartered red London bus a short quarter mile from their palace home to the High Street Kensington station. There, they met and chatted with charity workers who were selling the traditional red poppy emblems Britons wear to commemorate casualties of war. William and Kate, both 31, were helping to promote a Royal British Legion bid to raise £1.6 million (or $2.5 million) for the charity in a single day in the capital. The couple, who had left aides watching their 3-½-month-old son,...

While Christoph Waltz did a great job hosting "Saturday Night Live" ("Djesus Uncrossed," anybody?), it was Grammy-nominated band Alabama Shakes that made quite an impact as the episode's musical performer. If you weren't familiar with the rock group before Saturday then you weren't paying attention during 2012, and it's time to start playing catch up.
Here are a few things to know about the band:
- Alabama Shakes was formed in 2009, but didn't release their first full-length album until 2012's "Boys & Girls."
- Brittany Howard acts as lead singer and guitarist, Zac Cockrell is Alabama Shakes' bassist, Heath Fogg is also a guitarist and Steve Johnson is the drummer.
- Their song "Always Alright" (which they performed during "SNL") was written for the "Silver Linings Playbook" soundtrack.
- Alabama Shakes earned three Grammy nominations in 2012: Best New Artist, Best Rock Performance for "Hold On" and Best Recording Package for "Boys & Girls.

The 61-year-old has been a soap-opera actor since the 1980s, when he appeared on two episodes of "Dallas." Nichols had his first big role on "Days of Our Lives," playing Steve Johnson for 579 episodes between 1985 and 2009. He was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Lead Actor in 1988. Between 1997 and 2003, he starred as Stefan Cassadine on "General Hospital." Nichols joined the cast of "The Young and the Restless" in 2010 and has since appeared in almost 200 episodes.

Kyle Bennett, multi-time BMX world champion and member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic BMX team, suffered fatal injuries in relation to a single vehicle accident in Conroe, Texas shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 14.
In addition to his three Uci World championship titles, Bennett was a three-time Nbl champion and an Aba champion. He was inducted into the BMX Hall of Fame earlier this year, along with his 2008 Olympic teammates.
Espn reports Bennett was apparently responding to a break-in of his fiancee's vehicle and traveling at a high rate of speed, when his 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup truck left the roadway and struck a culvert pipe and several trees before landing upside down. Police at the scene say Bennett was not wearing a seat belt.
"All of us at USA Cycling were deeply saddened to learn this morning of the tragic and untimely loss of Kyle Bennett," says USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson in a statement.

It's not exactly a stretch to say the Alabama Shakes have come out of nowhere — it would, however, be incorrect.
After all, they hail from the town of Athens, Alabama (pop. 21,897), and, since forming in 2009, they've logged thousands of hours playing sweaty, soulful gigs throughout the Southeast — though Egan's Bar in nearby Tuscaloosa remains their spiritual home. Since January 2011, they've been working on their debut album, paying for recording sessions themselves using money from their various day jobs (painting houses, delivering mail), and slowly but surely building a bit of buzz, namely on blogs like Aquarium Drunkard, which posted an MP3 of the band last summer and inadvertently got them a deal with Ato Records.
In November 2011, they finished that debut disc, and in March 2012, the Shakes tore through the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin,...

In anticipation of their debut album, Boys & Girls, that’ll be available next week, the Alabama Shakes have released an official video for first single, “Hold On.” While the simple clip just features Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg, Zac Cockrell, Steve Johnson and Ben Tanner all jamming in a small room, the song’s sheer force lies in its simplicity (and thanks in good part to Howard’s powerful pipes).

Steve Johnson sat down with Fearnet to talk about his wonderful 30 year career in the VFX industries. While talking with them he was asked about Tim Burton's Superman Lives project, and more specifically about the suit he was designing for the film. "Don't start with me on that! I've had it with these things on-line saying 'this suit is probably why the movie didn't get made' and blah blah blah. What people don't understand is pretty straight forward," said Johnson. He went on to explain that the suit that people have seen photos and video of was not the actual suit for the film but was a suit they designed to regenerate Superman with the help of an alien. Said Johnson, "It was never meant to be the actual Superman suit. Superman dies, in Tim Burton's version. He's wrapped around by this alien presence which I would assume...

If overnight sensations The Alabama Shakes, with fans like Adele and Booker T. Washington, are good enough for Zales to use to hawk their diamonds, then they're good enough for me. Since releasing their debut four-song Ep last September, the Athens, Alabama group (yup, Athens again), led by soulful frontwoman Brittany Howard, have quickly established themselves as future 2012 best-of candidates. The twenty-three-year-old Howard (who was a postal worker mere months ago) grew up under the spell of artists like Elvis, Dion, James Brown, Loretta Lynn, and Otis Redding, and her throat-scarring delivery makes Janis Joplin comparisons inevitable. Her fellow Shakes introduced her to bands like T-Rex and AC/DC, as well as punk, and the rest is history. The band (guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Steve Johnson, and newest member, keyboardist Ben Tanner) recently did their thing on NPR's World Cafe, which included tackling Led [...]...

The sports world is abuzz Monday (Nov. 28) with talk of Buffalo Bills wide receiver Steve Johnson's touchdown celebration, in which Johnson mimed shooting himself in the leg with a gun. Why is this controversial? Because he was mocking opposing player Plaxico Burress, of the New York Jets, who three years ago accidentally shot himself in the leg in a night club with a gun stuffed in his sweatpants. Burress subsequently spent 20 months in jail on an illegal weapons charge.
Was it tasteless? Funny? Creative? How about all of the above? But it was also pretty foolish. The NFL has been cracking down on excessive Td celebrations in recent years and this particular gunshot really shot the Bills in the foot. It handed them a 15-yard penalty and helped the Jets score the game-tying touchdown. The Jets would go on to win 28-24, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Men in Black III, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Fantastic Four are big time films that make-up/visual effects artist Bart J. Mixon has had a hand in. Today we go old school with Bart and look at the southern fried zombie flick The Supernaturals.

I was a member of a comic book club (the Hcca) and one of the other members new some very basic information on make-up effects – taking life casts with plaster, slip latex casting, etc. – so I...

Maybe it’s the old-school film fiend in me talking out loud, but I prefer traditional makeup effects over computer-generated images any day of the week. One of the biggest complaints I had about the Will Smith sci-fi actioner “I Am Legend” was the director’s decision to create the film’s “zombies” using CGI. They stuck out like a sore thumb, causing yours truly to bitch and moan at length to anyone who would listen. Special effects wizard Steve Johnson recently released a video which shows what the filmmakers originally had in mind for the picture’s monsters, and I must say I would have loved the film a lot more had they stuck to the original design. Would this have solved all of the movie’s problems? Of course not. But it would have been a hell of a lot creepier. See for yourself by investigating the embedded video below.

You've got to check out this great video test footage from makeup FX artist Steve Johnson that shows us what the zombies from Francis Lawrence's I Am Legend could have looked like if they didn't take the road of crappy CG animated zombies. It all came down to the fact that the director couldn't get the performances he wanted from the actors playing the zombies. I can understand that, but I think there was a much better way of doing it than using bad CG. Even though these effects an make-up didn't really work out for the film, I still think it's pretty cool.
Johnson is the same guy that released the Tim Burton's Superman Lives costume stuff. It's awesome that he's releasing this unseen and unused movie effects stuff. Check out the makeup test footage below and tell us what you think!

He's blown the "What If" doors off Tim Burton's Superman Lives [1], Ang Lee's Hulk [2] and next up in Francis Lawrence's I Am Legend. Special Effects guru Steve Johnson has just released a video that shows an unused makeup test for the zombies in the 2007 Will Smith hit. Apparently Lawrence wasn't entirely happy with how the actors looked in this makeup and eventually just went to full CG creations. After watching the videos below, though, it's hard to imagine something grosser than the practical effects. It would have been a whole different movie. Check out the creepy video after the jump. Thanks to Shock Till You Drop [3] and /Film reader Kevin McCarney for the heads up. Here's the video. Now watch this scene from the final movie and try and figure out if it would have been more effective with those suits. It's pretty obvious why the effects weren't used.

Throughout the years, there has been many movie adaptations or at least films inspired by Richard Matheson’s iconic post-apocalyptic novel I am Legend. The book was influential in the development of the zombie genre and in popularizing the concept of a worldwide apocalypse due to disease, and was such a success it spawned such films as The Last Man on Earth in 1964, as The Omega Man in 1971, and I Am Legend in 2007. Yet to this day, no filmmaker has been able to capture the creatures to the satisfaction of fans of the novel.Well recently a video was discovered online that shows a very different and much improved creature designed to best match Matheson’s original vision. It comes from special effects artist Steve Johnson and was a test for Will Smith’s I Am Legend, but the makeup effects never made it into the final film, and instead they were replaced with CGI.

Considering Richard Matheson's "I am Legend" is one of the most iconic post-apocalyptic literary visions ever, you can imagine how excited we all were for the modern retelling. Then it starred Will Smith. And then it featured bad CGI vampires with stretchy mouths.
Even people who really like the latest I am Legend movie starring Will Smith complain about those stretchy, laughable CGI vampires in it. But would it surprise you to know that they weren't always envisioned that way?
A video has been dug up that shows a creature makeup test and it's hauntingly articulate and realistic. It from special effects artist Steve Johnson and you can't help but wonder how awesome these things would have been in action.
Check out the early makeup test for I Am Legend after the break and tell us how you think it compares to what we got.

Makeup FX artist Steve Johnson has been posting videos online, some of which have featured footage of FX that never made it to the screen (his suit for Tim Burton’s Superman Lives and an animatronic Hulk for Ang Lee’s film). Special effects artist Steve Johnson has been unveiling concept art, costume design and animatronics tests for such movies as Ang Lee's 2003 "Hulk" and Tim Burton's scrapped "Superman Lives." And now, Johnson has posted a video showing his work on Will Smith's 2007 sci-fi film "I Am Legend." Apparently director Francis Lawrence initially wanted the "infected" zombies to be played by actors. But after a few tests, the helmer realized that he wouldn't be able to get the performances that he's looking for and opted to go entirely CG. Johnson's video shows what the actors would have looked like in the movie. Yep, prepare to be annoyed. Before we get to that, though, you may be wondering why we're covering the Will Smith flick I Am Legend years after its release. Believe me we're just as shocked. Still, something really cool has surfaced online that should not be ignored.
I Am Legend was a sketchy at best loose adaptation of the Richard Matheson masterwork of the same name about a lone surviving man left to fend for himself against legions of vampyric creatures.
One devastating strike the film had going against it was the horrid CGI monsters. Yeah. They were that bad. It didn't have to be that way though. As you'll see from the video below, special effects artist Steve Johnson had created some really bitching looking physical creatures for the movie that unfortunately were thrown completely out into the trash in favor of their cartoonish looking cousins.

Makeup FX artist Steve Johnson has been spending his time exhuming old footage from his shop and posting it all online. The goodies range from gigs that didn't fly (like his costumes for Tim Burton's Superman Lives ) or projects that ultimately succumbed to CGI (an animatronic Hulk , for instance). By now you've probably read the news that relative unknown Brit actor Henry Cavill (Stardust, The Tudors, Tarsem’s upcoming Immortals) has been cast [1] as the titular alien superhero in Zack Snyder's forthcoming Superman reboot, beating out contenders such as Watchmen's Matthew Goode and The Social Network's Armie Hammer. What you may not know, however, is that this actually isn't his first time being selected to don the red cape and booties. Prior to Bryan Singer taking the helm on what would eventually become Superman Returns, Cavill was set to lead the Jj Abrams-scripted franchise revamp in '03/'04 for Charlie's Angels and Terminator Salvation director McG. But when McG abandoned the project, Cavill vanished along with him. Learn more after the break. Cavill has spoken openly about being cast in prior incarnations of Superman on several occasions, but for obvious reasons, it took until now for the discussions to become pertinent.

I watched the second half of that Bcs "championship" game the other night.
Yes, Bcs, you have caught me on the record. I did watch your game. I admit I enjoy a quality match-up between two excellent teams for all the perceived marbles, and in that respect you delivered. However, that is the only college football postseason game I watched with anything beyond a passing eye. Just imagine, profit-hungry advertisers, if some silly playoff system compelled me to watch 15 single-elimination games instead of only one. I digress.
In the rapture of victory, these were the very first words from Auburn football coach Gene Chizik's mouth to an on-field interviewer: "I just can't be more blessed to be part of a whole team like this. Man, God was with us."
It was a brief acknowledgment to that big deity upstairs, and Chizik then immediately complimented his team's work ethic and talent.
