HBO Set for Catskills Gas Rush Drama

7 September 2009 6:09 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

HBO has signed on Pulitzer Prize-winner Richard Russo to develop a drama about the Catskills Gas Rush.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Russo is writing the script and is executive producing with Mark Johnson and Will Gluck.

The untitled drama is based on a 2008 article in New York Magazine by David France, who will serve as a consulting producer on the project.

The Catskills are believed to hold the largest reservoir of natural gas ever discovered in America. Geologists have known about it for more than a century but it had been largely ignored because the location made it prohibitively expensive to exploit.

But the recent discovery of a drilling technique suited for Catskills' terrain and the fact that gas prices have tripled over the past decade suddenly made the region red hot.

However, to make it feasible for exploitation, gas companies have to secure vast swaths of land near »

Producer Mark Johnson has revealed that the forthcoming third instalment to Narnia is "a whole new franchise". Filming recently got under way in Queensland, Australia on next part The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader. 20th Century Fox agreed to back the film after Walt Disney Pictures decided not to produce further adaptations of the C.S. Lewis novels. Johnson said that the switch in studios has given the picture a look that differs from the first two chapters of the series. He told Coming Soon: "It's a whole new franchise, I think it's really benefiting from it. "It's a slightly different look. This one is different from the others, (more) »

Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

25 August 2009 11:39 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Website ComingSoon.net recently spoke to producer Mark Johnson about the third installment to the Chronicles of Narnia franchise, Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.. The third chapter finds Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their cousin Eustace, swallowed by a painting and mystically placed aboard the Dawn Treader ship. Along with friend Prince Caspian, the children sail to the far off Lone Islands where they duke it out with slave traders and other enchanted villains. Unlike the first two Narnia films, the third, directed by Michael Apted, will not be a direct adaptation. Instead, Apted wanted to create a new vision by giving the next installment a genuine feel. “I want to make a movie based on my recollection of it [as a child]” ha said. Taking on the imagination of a child, Apted felt that more would come out of the book and more imaginative thought would be put on screen. »

25 August 2009 12:50 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

After "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" failure to meet expectations, filmmakers will take different direction for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader". The producer of the third installment of the adventure movies, Mark Johnson, recently told Coming Soon, "It's a whole new franchise, I think it's really benefiting from it. It's a slightly different look."

Explaining how "Narnia 3" will be different from the other two movies, Johnson said this "Narnia" film has similarity with Ray Harryhausen's 1958 film "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad". "This one is different from the others, it's in that ['The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad'] league and they go from island to island having adventures. I'm very excited about it," he noted.

Johnson later credited his co-producer Andrew Adamson for the idea of a different "Narnia", recalling "Adamson said something that was so smart early on. I had just re-read the book and he said, 'I don't »

Excl: Producer Offers Hater Update

22 August 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Producer Mark Johnson, who is currently balancing duties between the next Chronicles of Narnia picture and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark , told me earlier today that progress continues on Hater , an adaptation of the David Moody novel he is co-producing with Guillermo Del Toro. "The script is getting turned in this week, actually," he said. The Shield 's Glen Mazzara is adapting the book. "I describe it as a zombie movie without zombies. So we'll see what we get. It's one of the few ones that focuses on an outbreak that affects people where it's never explained. A really good one. Others may do the same thing and be metaphors for AIDS or whatever, but, in this particular case you, can read all kinds of interpretations into it but at the end of the day it is... »

John Grisham Wants His Own 'Testament'

After resisting overtures for a decade, a best-selling author received an offer he couldn't refuse. John Grisham has finally allowed his 1999 novel The Testament to be optioned, according to Variety. Grisham will have "the right to provide creative input, which he didn't always have in the past -- one of the factors that pushed him away from Hollywood until about three years ago, when his fans prodded him to end his self-imposed movie moratorium."

The Testament revolves around a self-made billionaire who leaves his entire fortune to his illegitimate daughter, a young woman who lives and works "with a primitive tribe of Indians in the deepest jungles of Brazil." An attorney who's seen better days helps her battle the billionaire's relatives for the fortune. Producer Mark Johnson says: "It had the best of the courthouse stuff that John writes so well, plus this exotic adventure in deepest Brazil."
