For many, pairing up fictional characters is more than just frivolous fun. Shipping isn't just a pastime; it's a playground filled with possibilities, and it's serious business. You get a surge of serotonin when you revel in your romantic headcanons — as long as you're not toxic when you preach your personal shipping gospels to creators and fellow fans.
Eros, or romantic love, is a powerful Force in the galaxy far, far away. "Star Wars" fans have witnessed Han Solo and Leia Organa's will-they-or-won't-they tango, Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala's star-crossed love, and a rather controversial relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren, which culminated in a kiss. Now, it's time to indulge in some imaginary (or maybe not-so-imagined) romances. If you don't see your chosen "Otp" (one true pairing) here, the glorious thing about shipping is that you can conjure your own ships elsewhere, be it your imagination, fanart, or fanfic.

Chinese director, screenwriter and producer He Ping, best known internationally for his hybrid ‘Chinese Westerns’, has died aged 65. Local press reported that he died of illness in Beijing on January 10.
He Ping was well known on the international film festival circuit and was one of the first Chinese filmmakers to work with a U.S. studio, directing Warriors Of Heaven And Earth with backing from the now defunct Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia (Cpfpa) in 2003. Similar to two award-winning films he made in the 1990s, the film was shot in the Western deserts of China and combined elements of classic Westerns and Chinese wuxia (swordplay) movies.
Born in Shanxi province, He started his career in the 1980s, initially directing stage productions and documentaries, and later transferring to the state-owned Xian Film Studio, where acclaimed directors such as Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige had also started their careers. His early fiction...

The Movie: "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"

The Pitch: "I'm beginning to think the Force and I have different priorities." This is a simple throwaway line that Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) utters in "Rogue One," but anyone who's spent enough time in the galaxy far, far away, may have felt the same sentiment toward Disney, Lucasfilm, or George Lucas himself, somewhere along the way.
It's only been six years since the theatrical release of "Rogue One," but already that feels like a lifetime ago. So much has happened since 2016, in both the "Star Wars" franchise and the world at large, with the highs and lows of fandom playing out with the Skywalker sequels — as...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Andor."
Most of those involved with "Andor" have stressed that the series will be light on Easter eggs and references to other "Star Wars" projects. But seeing as "Andor" is still a prequel at the end of the day, it still manages to allude to future events where appropriate. While the references up to this point have been few and far between, it's getting harder to ignore the parallels between "Andor" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" — especially where the series' explosive Aldhani arc is concerned.
It's fitting that one of Cassian Andor's first missions for the Rebellion mirrors his very last. Both involve infiltrating Imperial bases, sure, and end with disappointing casualties, but so many of the rebels on the Aldhani mission also share traits with the rebels of "Rogue One." Take Taramyn (Gershwyn Eustache Jnr), who, like Bodhi...

Disney+ is gearing up for the upcoming release of their new Star Wars series, Andor. This new spin-off is based off of the character Cassian Andor who audiences were first introduced to in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which took place before the events of A New Hope. To help reacquaint audiences with the character, Lucasfilm is re-releasing Rogue One in IMAX theaters in the United States and Canada for one week starting on August 26.
This re-release of Rogue One will be using IMAX Dmr. This is the digital technology used to remaster the movie into the image and sound quality of the IMAX experience. In addition, audiences will be treated to new exclusive footage of the upcoming Disney+ show.
Andor will see the return of Diego Luna as the titular character. The 12-episode series will take place five years before the events of Rogue One. In this story,...

As hotshot pilot Kazuda “Kaz” Xiono in Disney’s new animated series “Star Wars Resistance,” Christopher Sean is the first Asian-American actor to be the lead in the “Star Wars” universe. It’s an impressive achievement, unless you’re his parents.
Said Sean, “In my family, it’s like, ‘Dad, Mom, I’m on “Days of Our Lives” and I’m on “Hawaii Five-o.”’ ‘But do you have an Oscar?’ ‘What? I’m on two shows. It’s not enough?’ With Kaz, it’s the same thing. His own father is an Asian father. He’s tough. He expects the best. He expects more. It’s never enough. ‘You’ve got to be doing more. You’re always getting into trouble.’ He’s got that relationship with his father and he’s trying to overcome adversity even at home.”

Ok, confession time: I make mistakes. Yes, yes, they rarely happen (kidding). I believe I made an illogical one when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story first came out, as I basically said it was terrible. My complaints were the same as many; no characters survived, no opening crawl, poor characters, and a terrible villain.
If you don't know, it is showing on Netflix currently in 4k, and I had the pleasure of rewatching it.
I had arguments with fans on Disqus, and many supported me, but others held their ground. I think the rewatch gave me a pause to examine exactly what was happening with my Star Wars brain.
1. I was expecting the typical Star Wars story where some character survives, at least one, that we would see down the road. This did not happen. To me there felt like the movie had no redeeming qualities, which brings me to point two,...

Hong Kong-based Emperor Motion Pictures (Emp) has acquired remake rights to TF1 Studio’s 2016 box office hit Penny Pincher! (Radin!), which it is setting up as a project for leading Chinese actor Ge You.
Produced by Paris-based JericoFilms, the original film [pictured] starred Dany Boon as a miserly music teacher in a small town, whose life is turned upside down when he falls in love. Directed by Fred Cavaye, the film was the fourth biggest local release in France last year, grossing €17.7m.
Emp’s Chinese-language remake is scheduled to go into production at the end of the year for a wide release in 2018. Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Something I've been tracking here on Lrm for the last couple of weeks is how well Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is going to do financially. We already know it's a critical success, and we already know that fans are high on the first standalone film set in the Star Wars galaxy. But coming a year after Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke all kinds of records, many have wondered how Rogue One would compare. And I'm not just referring to fans and bean counters. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy has said that the relative success of Rogue One will heavily influence how the company proceeds with the Star Wars franchise post-Episode IX.

The Star Wars franchise now has as many balls in the air as the Marvel Universe, and that means that there are going to be titles that exist almost exclusively to get fans to cheer. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is such an effort, and even if the fanservice gets boring and the plot development is largely sad, it’s hard to deny the fun of sitting through the whirlwind.
Felicity Jones plays Jyn Erso, who will eventually lead the mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, because, as we know from the original film, we need those plans to learn about the fantastic flaw in the design that will blow up the moon-sized weapon/base. The fan fawning begins there, as the entire premise of the film is a grand scale rebuff of one of the most complained about “plot flaws” that’s been floating around for forty years.

Before I jump into my main point about the latest live action Star Wars adventure known as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, I’d like to make some things clear. First, I loved it. By noon this past Friday I had seen it twice. I enjoyed it more than The Force Awakens. I’d be more than happy to go out and spend the money to see it again.
Now that I made that very clear, I’d like to go into two of my observations. While I wouldn’t necessarily consider anything I’m about to state as a spoiler, that doesn’t mean you won’t. If you are very sensitive to anything even remotely resembling a spoiler, please watch Rogue One before you continue reading.
We’re all on the same page now? Great!
The first observation I’m going to make revolves around foreign markets.

MaryAnn’s quick take… There’s genuine fun here, but the humor is cynical, the heroics are tinged with regret, and it’s all delivered with a cold smack of — yes — political relevance. I’m “biast” (pro): massive Star Wars fan, don’t even get me started
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Damn.
Did we think, at the end of the very first Star Wars movie, that Luke Skywalker was a hero? He was nothing. Nothing.
Did we think Luke Skywalker was a hero? What he did was nothing to what we see here.
Okay, not nothing. But, as Rogue One reveals with brutal clarity, Luke’s lucky Force-assisted like–bulls-eying–womprats bombing run at the Death Star was only the final link in a very long chain of people doing way more brave and way more daring things.

Well, those twelve months blasted past us at “light speed”! Film fans were all a flutter (and full of the “force”) when Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens exploded onto multiplex screens at this time last December and proved that the power of this franchise had not weakened. Now that original trilogy (episodes IV through VI) that began in 1977, and its prequel flicks (episodes I through III) which resumed in 1999, were released in three-year spurts. All that changed when the Disney company bought the series’ home, Lucasfilm, a few years ago. It was announced that new “episode” installments would come out every other year. So just what is this new movie then. The “mouse house” game plan is to have a film “set in the Star Wars’ universe” in theatres every year. In between the episodes there will be “back story” and ‘spin-off” flicks, like the “currently in pre-production” young Han Solo adventure.

Over the weekend, a huge premiere in Los Angeles was held for the blockbuster Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That’s not the notable part though. What’s notable is that the initial buzz out of it was extraordinarily positive. This week, audiences get to see what critics have seen already, which is a brand new Star Wars movie. That alone is a huge deal, even if it’s going to be a yearly occurrence now. It still feels special, which is only helped by how this is getting strong reviews. On the heels of the warmly received Star Wars: The Force Awakens last year, this should also be a huge hit for Disney. That $4 Billion investment is looking pretty good right about now. The film is the first Star Wars movie not to be a direct prequel or sequel. It’s not a “saga” story, so it...

The new revival of the Star Wars franchise, post Disney purchase, seemed at first to be set to milk the sci-fi series for all it’s worth. And nowhere was that more evident than when Rogue One was announced… I doubt anyone was eager to see how the Death Star plans got into the hands of Princess Leia in the original 1977 movie, except maybe hardcore Star Wars fans – who would probably have settled for a novelisation or perhaps an animated series (where the Star Wars universe has really flourished outside of the movies). However having seen Rogue One, I don’t know how we ever lived without this particular Star Wars tale!

Its almost that time, Star Wars fans: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be released on Dec 16, 2016 which is less than one week away from this writing. Lrm has been all over every detail of the upcoming film, and we were ecstatic when 3 more short, but juicy, clips were debuted. Check out the first clip below, and we’ll catch you on the other side for commentary!
In this first clip we see the apparent origin of the film title (which is a scene we saw a snippet of in one of the trailers). Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) is on the radio with an imperial officer who is curious as to why an "impounded imperial ship" is trying to disembark from the bay. It still starts “long ago in a galaxy far, far away,” but the newest “Star Wars” film — and the first in a planned series of standalone spinoff features — has done away with at least one classic element from the beloved franchise: The opening crawl.
As has long been rumored, the opening of Gareth Edwards’ “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” won’t kick off with a scrolling summary of the backdrop, instead opting to drop the audience into its brand new story, albeit one that pulls from the pivotal event (the secretive theft of the Death Star’s building plans) that set the course of “A New Hope” into action so many years ago.

The latest sneak peek shows the group of unlikely heroes who band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star. Android K-2So, voiced by Alan Tudyk, shows his support for Jyn (Felicity Jones) after Captain Andor (Diego Luna) said “he had to.” We also see more of Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Îmwe, Wen Jiang as Baze Malbus and Riz Ahmed as Bodhi Rook. The trailer also shows how difficult it is to take down the All Terrain Armored Cargo Transport (At-act).

A couple of months ago, we noted how it’s been a seriously underwhelming year for Chinese-language cinema – an assessment that stands despite the recent release of Berlinale-winner Crosscurrent. Well, turns out the Middle Kingdom might have a year-end surprise or two up its sleeve after all. Having scored a Fipresci prize at Toronto and the prestigious Golden Seashell at San Sebastián, I Am Not Madame Bovary is a healthy return to form for veteran director Xiaogang Feng that, while not exactly hitting the ball out of the park, delivers a genuinely funny, slyly observant diagnosis of contemporary China complete with lush, absurdist flair.
The many cultural references that give a societal satire like this its texture but inevitably get lost in translation begin with the title. Instead of Flaubert’s world-known creation, it’s actually Pan Jinlian that our heroine Li Xuelian (played by Bingbing Fan) denies of being.

As usual, two of the most dependable martial arts action stars do not disappoint. The newest DVD release of Anchor Bay Entertainment’s The Lost Bladesman starring Donnie Yen and Reign of Assassins with the lovely Michelle Yeoh are both hypnotizing and chalked full of heart pounding action. The Lost Bladesman
The Lost Bladesman takes place during tumultuous times when the three kingdoms of ancient China were drowning in warfare. It’s a daring and gripping story peppered with heroic battles. In a struggle for power, only one can obtain it. The strength of one man’s blade would decide it all then deliver him into an unyielding fate.
Even though his character is an unstoppable force, Donnie’s humbling approach to Guan Yuanchan (Guan Yuan) truly defined “a wolf with the soul of a lamb.” He is masterful with the blade. Though not without compassion as only his enemies experience its fatal wrath.

With its release date quickly approaching, Disney continues to push the marketing machine for Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story into high gear, giving fans even more to chew on with this brand new international trailer for the film, which hit the web earlier today.
Surprisingly, we actually get a fair amount of new footage from the Star Wars spinoff here, including a great shot of Darth Vader at the end. For the most part, the new preview focuses on Felicity Jones’ rebel leader Jyn Erso, and understandably so, but there’s also tons of explosions, dialogue which we haven’t heard before and the promise of a truly epic adventure come December.

While some felt it strayed too close to the tried and tested formula – droid holds MacGuffin, Rebels lay siege to Death Star-esque weapon, cue credits – few would argue that The Force Awakens was crafted in such a way that it almost perfectly captured the look and feel of Star Wars.
It was a conscious decision from both J.J. Abrams and the Powers That Be at Disney, as all involved looked to turn a blind eye to the effects-laden duds known as the prequels. With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, director Gareth Edwards takes that creative process one step further, constructing practical effects and dynamic sets that evoke memories of A New Hope in the best possible way.

It's finally here! Lucasfilm has released the new full trailer for Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and it's incredible! I know Disney and Lucasfilm don't think that this is going to be as big a hit as The Force Awakens, but as much as I loved that movie, this one looks like it could be a better Star Wars film! The trailer is packed with awesome new footage and more insight into the story and characters that just left me breathless. I can't wait to see more! I just want to scream with excitement!

Even though I'm extremely excited about Lucasfilm's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the poster art has been pretty disappointing. Today we have a new Russian poster to share with you for the film and it looks like someone actually gave it a little effort and thought. I especially like the shadow of the rebel helmet in the water.
I also included a series of Topps trading card art featuring various characters including Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), K-2So (Alan Tudyk), Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen), Baze Malbus (Wen Jiang), Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), and Darth Vader (James Earl Jones).

Star Wars Celebration: How ‘Rogue One’ Fits Into the ‘Star Wars’ Universe, According To Its Creators
The “Star Wars” franchise has never been one to adhere to doling out its offerings in linear fashion — you name another franchise that starts with its fourth film, heads back to its story’s start 22 years later, then crafts an entirely new trilogy to follow all that still more years later — and its first standalone feature, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” won’t be breaking that tradition. But while Gareth Edwards’ new film isn’t actually a part of the three trilogies that make up the current entire existence of the “Star Wars” cinematic universe, it will fit into its timeline.

The first trailer for Star Wars: Rogue One is officially here. We take a closer look at what it all means...
If The Force Awakens had one herculean trial to undertake - relaunch the Star Wars franchise for a new generation of moviegoers - then Rogue One has a mighty task of its own. This is, after all, both a spin-off from the numbered Star Wars entries and also a prequel to 1977's A New Hope.
As history has already taught us, Star Wars sequels aren't necessarily easy to get right.
What Rogue One does offer, however, is the possibility of opening up the Star Wars universe in ways that were previously confined to books, videogames and other media. Director Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) has pitched his movie as a mash-up of Dirty Dozen and space opera; its basic plot involves the Rebels' attempt to steal...

The first trailer for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" just arrived with a rebel yell and some welcome throwbacks to the Og era.
"Good Morning America" debuted the teaser trailer for the first standalone story in the "Star Wars" universe, which stars Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Wen Jiang, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk, and hits theaters in December.
Felicity Jones's Jyn takes center stage, like Daisy Ridley's Rey in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." We hear a younger Mon Mothma describe Jyn as on her own from age 15, reckless, aggressive, undisciplined. "This is a rebellion, isn't it?" Jyn quips. "I rebel."
Damn right, she does, and she accepts her mission: A major weapons test is imminent, and they need to know what it is and destroy it. This story is set just before the events of Episode IV, "A New Hope,...

And we do mean a teaser.
Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that the very first trailer for Godzilla director Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will debut during Good Morning America on Thursday April 7th, and they’ve released literally one second of footage from the movie to hype it.
It may be brief, but we still get our first official look at some brand new black-armored Stormtroopers that’ll feature in the prequel to A New Hope. One of the many rumors surrounding the production of Rogue One had these guys pegged as “Deathtroopers,” but obviously that’s yet to be confirmed.
More News From The Web
Aside from that, the teaser tells us absolutely nothing about the plot – but we do already know that the story will revolve around a team of rebels led by Felicity Jones’ character, who embark on a dangerous mission to retrieve...

From the late 80’s until the early 00’s, Chinese cinema has been a mainstay at A-list film festivals worldwide, picking up trophies left and right. Things changed, however, as the Mandarin film market experienced an exponential growth in the last decade, inspiring many award-winning “underground” filmmakers to go “mainstream.” While making movies for a mass audience is in itself a perfectly valid pursuit, the drastic decline in quality of these auteurs’ commercially-oriented work has been more than disheartening. Golden Bear (Red Sorghum) and two-time Golden Lion (The Story of Qiu Ju; Not One Less) winner Yimou Zhang, for example, has given us splashy CG-extravaganzas like House of Flying Daggers or Curse of the Golden Flower that are a far cry from his earlier work in terms of subtlety and insightfulness. Palme d’Or winner Kaige Chen (Farewell My Concubine) crashed and burned with the much-maligned Sacrifice; and Cannes Granx Prix...

With all of the newly announced entries into the Star Wars universe beginning to take shape, only one of them stands out as different from the others, and actually seems to warrant fan’s attention.
That film is Star Wars: Rogue One, a “heist” film that will revolve around a rag-tag group of Rebel soldiers who are tasked with stealing the blueprints of the Empire’s disastrous planet destroying Deathstar. The cast of characters will be new for the film universe, and far more diverse than any other Star Wars movie sans-Force Awakens.
Just look at who’s in it: You’ve got Felicity Jones as the leader of “things,” Forest Whitaker sporting the ‘Forest Whitaker Eye,’ Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk, Diego Luna, Wen Jiang, Johnathan Aris, Mads Mikkelsen as ‘Hannibal the Fannibal,’ and Ben Mendelsohn as ‘That Guy Killed by Bane.’

With only a few weeks to go until the Berlin Film Festival unspools, much of the competition lineup still remains a mystery. However, today has added some clarity with several titles unveiled. Among them, Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi’s latest effort. The director, who is under house arrest and a 20-year filmmaking ban, nevertheless manages to get a movie out every couple of years. His last, Closed Curtain, stirred up controversy in Iran when it won the screenwriting prize in Berlin in 2013. This latest film, Taxi, stars the director, although other details were not immediately available.

Let the Bullets Fly was the biggest hit of all time in China when released domestically in 2011. Written and directed by actor Wen Jiang, the film takes place in a tumultuous time in China’s history in the early part of last century. A bandit known as Pockmark Zhang (Wen Jiang) descends upon the small province of Goose Town having kidnapped the new mayor and deciding to take the position for himself. Looking to make a fortune, Zhang soon finds himself up against the ruthless gentry Huang (Chow Yun-Fat) who will stop at nothing to remain in power.
With a title like that and the fact that it stars one of the coolest movie stars who ever lived in Chow Yun-Fat, you could be forgiven for expecting a kinetic Asian action flick that lives up to the best of the genre, except Let the Bullets Fly is kind of a spectacular mess.

Slapstick, drama and extreme gastronomy – this hugely successful Chinese film covers all the bases
Wen Jiang's crowd-pleaser swings on a scene in which a bandit disembowels himself to prove he's eaten one, not two, bowls of jelly. "Don't worry! I'll get a doctor!" yells a friend as the guts slide across the floor. Drama and slapstick are at play in this 1920s-set action comedy, in which Jiang plays Pockmark Zhang, an outlaw who infiltrates mob-ruled Goose Town to take on greedy crimelord Master Huang (Chow Yun-Fat). Between the kung fu, the gunplay, a gentle romantic subplot and the extreme gastronomy – there's something for everyone.
