Colcoa is keeping up with the times. Now in its twenty-first year, the lauded French film festival, sponsored by the Franco-American Cultural Fund, has added a pair of forward-thinking new categories for its newest edition. This year will include a virtual reality program and a web series competition, in addition to its Cinema, Television and Shorts competitions.
“These two new popular formats offer more opportunities to showcase the creativity of French producers and filmmakers as well as the diversity of French production,” said François Truffart, Colcoa Executive Producer and Artistic Director. “While entertainment is still the key word for the program, with a balanced mix of comedies and dramas, several topical issues will cover the program this year, including the environment, discrimination, racism, terrorism, and the role of the artist in society. More than ever, Colcoa will offer a unique opportunity to see these universal topics from different angles.”

Inside Llewyn Davis (15)
(Joel & Ethan Coen, 2013, Us) Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Adam Driver, Garret Hedlund, John Goodman. 105 mins
Bob Dylan hadn't written Like A Rolling Stone when this is set (New York, 1961), but Isaac's eponymous hero could almost be the inspiration. He's the archetypal drifter: a complete unknown with no direction home and little prospect of realising his folk-star dream, despite, or perhaps because of, his artistic integrity. The Coens let us know exactly how it feels. This is their most mature drama to date: subdued, sincere, bleakly funny, and as finely crafted as we've come to expect.
August: Osage County (15)
(John Wells, 2013, Us) Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts. 121 mins
Heavy acting artillery is positioned for a full-on awards assault, with Streep's malign matriarch marshalling her fractured family for some mourning and bloodletting.

Another sappy movie about a lovable man-child who finds out he's fathered 533 kids via sperm donations? Oh, but this time it's French
Stop me if you've heard this one before: a feckless yet lovable man-child (José Garcia) finds out he's fathered 533 kids via sperm donations he made 20 years ago. Although he's fighting in court to maintain his anonymity, he can't resist surreptitiously meeting some of the children he sired, thereby discovering hitherto unsuspected wells of paternal feeling. Yes, it's the same sappy-sweet plot as director Ken Scott's 2011 French-Canadian movie Starbuck, which was recently remade (by Scott himself) into Vince Vaughn vehicle Delivery Man, using a story probably inspired by the 2010 documentary Donor Unknown (still the most interesting take on the raw material). The only major difference with Fonzy, which cleaves slavishly to Scott's template, is that it's set in France. Watch all of them back to back and it's...

It hasn't traveled yet as far as I know, and I know several of you expressed interest in it when we profiled it several months ago. Greed. It's one of the seven deadly sins for a very good reason. It can consume you. Dictate your actions. Make you act out in very violent ways. In short ... we love sin! Especially sin that ends in bloodshed and carnage.

Actor and comedian turned film producer Chris Rock has only just finished the remake of British comedy Death At A Funeral, which he produced and starred in, but he's already got his sights set on his next project: another adaptation, this time of 1963 drama High and Low, originally by legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa.
The funnyman has revealed that he is to replace David Mamet as writer, in a project first commissioned by Martin Scorsese back in 1999. It's not yet known whether Scorsese is still involved in the movie, which will be directed by Mike Nichols. In fact, very few details have been released about the remake, but it's understood that the plot will stick closely to the original movie's story of a businessman trying to make extra money in an effort to save a kidnapped child.
Taking on Kurosawa is a brave step, but Rock appears unfazed by such challenges,...

Paris – French Academy members got serious on Friday with two politically charged dramas heading the major categories for the 35th annual Cesar Awards that will see Jacques Audiard's "A Prophet" go head to head with Philippe Lioret's "Welcome." The nominees were announced Friday at a press conference in Paris.
While no one can foresee the winners, "A Prophet" looks bound to triumph with Jacques Audiard's prison drama nominated for 13 awards including best film, best director and a best actor and most promising male newcomer nod for the film's breakout star Tahar Rahim.
Academy voters also gave a hearty reception to Phillipe Lioret's "Welcome" with 10 nods and Xavier Giannoli's "In the Beginning" with 11 nominations.
Radu Mihaileanu's "The Concert" was also music to voters' ears with the tragicomedy about a washed-up former conductor of the Bolshoi orchestra who travels to Paris to make his career comeback scoring six nominations.

Chris Rock loves him some French cinema doesn’t he? This is the second French title he’ll be remaking. The first was the late Eric Rohmer’s L’Amour l’après-midi (Love In The Afternoon/Chloe In The Afternoon), which Rock remade as the horrible 2007 film I Think I Love My Wife.
Now Variety reports that Rock has optioned English-language remake rights to La premiere etoile (The First Star), directed by Lucien Jean-Baptiste, who also starred in it.
A comedy with a broad social commentary on race and class, 2009’s La Premiere Etoile is about a black family in France who leave their working-class hood to take to the ski slopes – something that’s considered a social faux pas in the stuffy, mostly white resort.
So, unlike Rohmer’s L’Amour l’après-midi, La Premiere Etoile already features a black family – a French black family, but a black family nonetheless.

Chris Rock, the American comedian and producer, has optioned the rights to the 2009 French film, La Première étoile (The First Star). He will be writing the remake's screenplay as well as produce the film.
The original film is pertinent social commentary in French society. It chronicles the story of a black family who leave their working-class neighbourhood and head to the ski resort that is normally only visited by a certain elite. The trip is considered a social faux pas by the usual crowd at the resort.
Lucien Jean-Baptiste's film was the tenth highest-grossing movie in France last year and Chris Rock will be hoping to achieve at least the same success in the United States. Will the original's success rub off the remake? Let us know what you think below...

I got to get this off my chest. I absolutely hated Chris Rock's most recent stand-up performance. He got way too political, and it didn't even look like he cared to be funny. Maybe he knows it, as he's decided that a better career choice would be to option the remake rights to the French film The First Star.
Chris Rock Remaking The First Star
Chris Rock isn't just going for producer credits either, as the comedian slash actor has taken it upon himself to write the remake's screenplay. The original follows a black family who leave their working-class hood to take to the ski slopes. That's considered a social faux pas in the stuffy resort. The film was directed by Lucien Jean-Baptiste, who also starred.

Chris Rock just can't keep his hands off French films. Not content with remaking Rohmer in I Think I Love My Wife, he's nabbed the rights to Lucien Jean-Baptiste's La premiere etoile, which translates to The First Star.Rock is planning to write the screenplay and produce the tale of a black family from a working class neighborhood who outage the stuffy rich types when they show up at their ski resort.Jean-Baptiste directed the film last year and it surged at the French box office, ending up the 10th highest earner for the year. Rock's clearly hoping that some of that magic will rub off on the remake - and he'll need it, since Wife saw little critical or commercial success back in 2007.

The year's first quarter on the international circuit ended with a whimper at the boxoffice as Summit Entertainment's "Knowing," a time-capsule sci-fi thriller with Nicolas Cage, grabbed the No. 1 spot with a relatively modest $9.5 million from 1,684 locations in 10 markets for an early overseas total of $14.1 million.
The biggest boosts to "Knowing" were first-place bows in the U.K. ($3.6 million from 391 screens) and Australia ($1.4 million from 204 sites) and a No. 2 placement in Mexico. Still, the weekend tally was the smallest so far this year registered by any No. 1 overseas finisher.
A very close No. 2 on the weekend was Warner Bros. International's "Gran Torino," which captured $8.9 million from 2,800 screens in 45 markets. A No. 6 Mexico bow for the Clint Eastwood vehicle registered $324,191 from 195 screens. Much stronger grosses were recorded in holdover engagements in France, Italy and Spain. The overseas total for "Gran Torino" stands at $73.3 million.
