The release of revered Indian filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s hugely anticipated epic adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s classic Tamil-language novel “Ponniyin Selvan” is the realization of his childhood dream.
One of India’s most celebrated filmmakers whose films include “Nayakan,” “Bombay” and “Iruvar,” Ratnam read the novel when he was in high school and wanted to make it ever since. Post the tremendous critical and commercial success of “Nayakan” (1987), when that film’s lead Kamal Haasan wanted to make another film with Ratnam, the filmmaker considered “Ponniyin Selvan,” but the stars did not align at that time.
Ratnam’s last film, “Chekka Chivantha Vaanam” (2018), was co-produced by his Madras Talkies and Subaskaran’s Lyca Productions (“2.0”).
“After ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam,’ it happened – when Lyca asked what I was planning to do next, I told them, not planning anything, but I would like to do ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ and Subaskaran said yes – and that’s when it started,...

Film Review If director Mm Chandramouli had given half the time spent on focusing the camera on Shalini's navel to the script, maybe the movie would have been passable.Priyanka ThirumurthyOn this exact day last year, I sat down exhilarated in front of my laptop, set to type the review for a love story that stirred my soul - 96. So, it is almost a cosmic catastrophe that 100% Kadhal (the remake of a Telugu film), an incorrigible romantic comedy, starring Gv Prakash and Shalini Pandey, would release a year later, forever scarring this day (and my mind). Here is where we usually warn readers of spoilers that will follow, but considering that the sole purpose of this movie is to ruin your mood and spoil your day, it barely deserve this leniency. 100% Kadhal (more like 100% Nonsense) follows the love-hate relationship between its leads Balu (Gv Prakash), a self proclaimed genius, and...

KollywoodThe film begins with ‘Agila Ulaga Superstar’ Shiva’s voice-over and this is the only portion during the entire film that sounds mildly funny. Anjana ShekarCharlie Chaplin starring actors Prabhu Deva and Prabhu that released in 2002 became so popular that it was remade in Hindi, Telugu, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada and Bengali! Actor Prabhu, in fact, won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for his performance in this film. Can the same be said for Charlie Chaplin 2 that has just released? Not in a million years! Besides, it was not as though the 2002 film was a particularly great one either. Charlie Chaplin was inspired from the 1975 Tamil film Yarukku Maappillai Yaro, directed by Sp Muthuraman and starring Jaishankar, Jayachitra, Sreekanth and Fatafat Jayalaxmi. The plot-line of both the films revolved around a lying husband and his suspicious wife. In Charlie Chaplin, Prabhu and actor Abhirami played the husband and wife roles respectively.
