He was granted a songwriting credit along
Donald Fagen and
Walter Becker for Steely Dan's song "Gaucho" after a lawsuit. When the title track of Dan's 1980 album was becoming popular, a magazine reporter noted the similarity between the song and Jarrett's composition "Long As You Know You're Living Yours", released in 1974. Fagen and Becker admitted liking the tune and having used it as inspiration to compose "Gaucho". Jarrett sued, won the case and received not only the writing credits along with the duo but also receives the song's royalties.
