Jamie Foxx will be working once again with Ray helmer Taylor Hackford as he has joined the cast of his latest film project Signal Hill. The cop scandal drama was written by David McMillan and Foxx will join the previously cast Anthony Mackie as attorney Johnnie Cochran, and Elizabeth Banks as an investigative newspaper reporter who investigated and broke stories on the coverup.
Long before he defended O.J. Simpson in the trial of the century, Cochran established himself as a legal superhero because of his unrelenting pursuit of justice in the Signal Hill police brutality case in 1981.
Foxx will take on the role of Elmer “Geronimo” Pratt. He was a former Black Panther party leader and Vietnam vet who was convicted of a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison for 27 years. Cochran was the lawyer who helped Pratt to settle a false imprisonment suit for $4.5 million back in 1992. The news comes from Deadline,...

CBS has set up an animated Michael Jackson project called Michael Jackson's Halloween. According to THR, the network has teamed with Jackson's estate to develop the special, which will incorporate the music of the late pop star.
The hour-long telecast will follow millennials Vincent (MacGyver star Lucas Till) and Victoria (The Flash film's Kiersey Clemons), who meet “accidentally” on Halloween night and find themselves, along with Ichabod the dog, at a mysterious hotel located at 777 Jackson Street called This Place Hotel. Once inside, Vincent and Victoria go an unexpected, magical adventure of personal discovery, culminating in a spectacular dance finale featuring an animated Jackson.
Sounds like it could be fun! I'm especially interested in seeing how this animated Michael Jackson dance scene turns out! You can see a piece of key art from the special above featuring the two main characters and spooky setting.

The most recent images on Kim Kardashian’s Instagram account are almost three months old, from her trip to Paris. One ominously includes a photo of her bodyguard trailing close behind her with the caption “This guy is always in my shot.” Of course, he was nowhere in sight the night of October 2, 2016, when the reality TV star was held at gunpoint in her hotel room. It was that terrifying incident that prompted Kim to take an indefinite hiatus from social media and public engagements.
For the average celebrity -- one who pops into the public eye only to promote a new project -- this wouldn't be a big deal, but Kim Kardashian is not the average celebrity. Her entire empire was built on sharing the details of her personal life at all times. And by stepping out of the spotlight, Kim’s business has taken a hit.

Two dozen years ago, Billy Ray Cyrus was America's best-selling musician.
Nirvana's Nevermind, Michael Jackson's Dangerous and Whitney Houston's Bodyguard soundtrack all spent time at the top of the Billboard charts in 1992, but nothing remained there as long as Cyrus' debut, Some Gave All, which sold more copies that year than any artist in any genre. Then, as quickly as he'd rocketed to the top, Cyrus began to free-fall out of pop-culture consciousness, taking everything that his now-infamous music video for "Achy Breaky Heart" had so enthusiastically endorsed...

Envisioned as a loveable sidekick, Jar Jar Binks inspired anger among critics and fans in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. What went wrong?
If you're too young to remember the surreal level of pre-release hype surrounding Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in early 1999, take a look at this Vanity Fair article, published in January that year. Writer David Kamp was out in the Tunisian desert to report on what was surely going to be the biggest film of the decade: George Lucas's triumphant return to the Star Wars universe.
The Phantom Menace has, Kamp writes, "a Garbo mystique"; it's the most "craved film ever" - a cinema event capable of bringing the country to a standstill on release day.
But in among the breathless anticipation all over that article, tiny warning signs can be found.
For one thing, there's a sneak peek at a...

Pepsi has a long history with pop music. The soft-drink company’s roster of celebrity endorsers has included Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Britney Spears, Beyonce and Nicki Minaj. So it makes sense that Pepsi has partnered with Fox on a massive integrated-advertising campaign for “Empire,” about a fictional family of hip-hop superstars. In a storyline taking place over three episodes — the second of which airs Wednesday — Jamal, played by Jussie Smollett, makes a Pepsi commercial that will be unveiled in the Dec. 2 midseason finale, then air when the show cuts to commercial break. As ad integrations go, Pepsi-“Empire”...

There are two things that have inhibited me in the past from broadening my horror film horizons. Those things would be subtitles and anything filmed in black and white. I’ve conquered my perceived drudgery of reading subtitles, and after many forced exercises to multitask my watching and reading simultaneously, I can get lost in a really good horror movie, and the subtitles come as second nature. I’m still struggling with the black and white. Even established classics such as “Night of the Living Dead...

Without a doubt, 2014 was TMZ‘s year. The former celebrity rag has been working hard to become a reputable source of news, and has stepped up its game to provide some of the year’s most thoroughly reported celebrity stories. When TMZ first launched in beta in 2005, it was an exercise in gossipmongering, designed to rival sites like Perez Hilton and Just Jared. TMZ’s first “big” story was obtaining and disseminating video of Paris Hilton‘s drunken car accident in 2005. Director Joe Dante's 1989 horror comedy The Burbs is one of my favorite Tom Hanks films. I watch it a handful of times throughout the year, and it's almost always on a rainy lazy Sunday afternoon. With Halloween closing in on us, I thought now might be a good time to start focusing my "Fun Facts" lists on horror films, and I decided to start with The Burbs because it's awesome. Apparently, the studio didn't think the audience would appreciate witnessing his death on screen, so the ending had to be rewritten. It would have been a much darker film had Hanks' character died. Hot off of the success of his HBO-series True Detective's stellar first season, American director Cary Fukunaga is on the hunt for a new project. He has found it in a biopic championed by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter John Legend. Deadline reports Cary Fukunaga has signed on to write and direct The Black Count, a depiction of the incredible life and adventures of French Revolution-era General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas. John Legend will produce the period piece picture alongside Mike Jackson under their Get Lifted Film Co. banner. Sony is on board to oversee and distribute. Fukunaga's source material for this intriguing biopic is Tom Reiss's Pulitzer-winning biography, The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, And The Real Count of Monte Cristo. If it's hero's name sounds familiar to you, that's probably because of the writings of Thomas-Alexandre's son, Alexandre Dumas, who fashioned his father's life into his historical novels The Count of Monte Cristo...

(Cbr) Although Cary Fukunaga directed the 2011 film adaptation of "Jane Eyre", he didn’t really explode into the public consciousness until this year with HBO’s "True Detective", his glorious collaboration with Nic Pizzolatto. And just as audiences tried to unravel Pizzolatto’s dense writing, searching for clues about the identity of the Yellow King, they dissected the work of Fukunaga and cinematographer Adam Arkapaw, studying each scene and marveling at that much-discussed six-minute single-take tracking shot. However, they’ve also wondered what Fukunaga’s next project will be — and now there’s an answer: Deadline reports he’ll direct "The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo", Sony Pictures’ adaptation of Tom Reiss’ Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas. Born to a French nobleman and a slave woman of African descent, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas became the first non-white to become a brigadier general in the French military,...

The DNA results that had supposedly proven that 31 year old singer Brandon Howard, son of gospel singer Micki Howard is Michael Jackson’s illegitimate son are confirmed as bogus. On Thursday afternoon Digital media entrepreneur, Alki David and his media company disclosed sets of DNA results from Michael and Howard saying that they are a match. What they did not disclose was what lab the results came from. Through much digging and research, the answer was ; the lab that the “results” came from is ripped from Terminator Salvation. The logo on the results is the same logo that was used for promotional purposes of the movie. And unsurprisingly, a DNA lab named “DNA Lab” does not even exist. Nice try, Alki.

At the National Board of Review Awards Gala earlier this year, before the Oscar nominations were announced, 20 Feet From Stardom director Morgan Neville, David Heyman, producer of Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, and screenwriter Terence Winter for Martin Scorsese's The Wolf Of Wall Street, shared with me their favorite fairy tales. All three have since received Academy Award nominations.
20 Feet From Stardom shines the spotlight with insight and intimacy on the careers of Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Claudia Lennear and Judith Hill as background singers for the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, Bette Middler, and Sting, with recent interviews. It also features archival performance and studio footage with David Bowie, Talking Heads, the Rolling Stones, Luther Vandross, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson and Phil Spector.

It’s not surprising that one of the best musically inclined docs of 2013 was pieced together by director Morgan Neville, a filmmaker who over the years has cinematically profiled the likes of Muddy Waters, Hank Williams, Brian Wilson, Ray Charles and so many others. Neville’s latest shows his vast knowledge of rock and roll mythology while highlighting his apt for storytelling economy, digging deep and moving nimbly between subjects yet rarely just glancing an anecdote. This time he’s chosen to unearth those overlooked by history, those whose voices enriched so many classic recordings with layers of youthful soul, yet went unheralded as solo artists, those who will be remembered for living just 20 Feet From Stardom. With expeditious style and an ear for the best mix of relevant tunes, Neville nods to the all important back up singers.
You may not know them by name, but you certainly know their voices.

The wording of Aeg’s release about the restructuring is bitter cold: The company “has ended its relationship with Randy Phillips, the CEO of Aeg Live, and is restructuring the management of that live entertainment subsidiary” it said. There’s no word of thanks — or anything about what happened, or will happen, with Phillips, who joined Aeg Live in 2002 and last year signed a five-year contract. The announcement says that Jay Marciano, who was COO, is now chairman and will oversee a team in La of Paul Tollett, John Meglen, Shawn Trell and Rick Mueller. “I look forward to my greater involvement with the enormously talented Aeg Live Team in continuing to invest and grow one of Aeg’s most important divisions,” Marciano says. With the Season 5 live playoffs of "The Voice" behind us, it's time for the true competition begin. The Top 12 are prepping to take the stage to find for America's vote, with coaches Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and CeeLo Green only able to sit back and hope one of their artists can bring home the trophy for their team. Who will perform well enough to advance to the Top 10? Let's find out!
First up is Team CeeLo's Caroline Pennell. CeeLo's having the cutie sing Avicii's "Wake Me Up" this week. The coach things she's the one to beat, which may be a stretch, but she's certainly a strong contender.
Caroline's youth matches the lyrical content of the song perfectly, and her voice seems to be growing stronger as each week passes. It's an adorable performance, certainly setting the night off on a good foot.
Side note: Wtf is CeeLo wearing?...

Two years before Diane Keaton charmed audiences in Annie Hall, she posed for photographer Norman Seeff. But Seeff says Keaton's off-camera persona matched up with what she portrayed on-screen. ‘One Direction: This Is Us’ movie weekend box office: One of steepest Friday-to-Saturday drops ever (photo: One Direction members Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson) The 3D concert movie One Direction: This Is Us failed to get even close to the $20 million mark at the North American box office this Labor Day weekend (Fri-Sun) despite relatively strong opening-day grosses. Featuring One Direction band members Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson, and directed by Morgan Spurlock, whose Super Size Me was shortlisted for the 2004 Best Documentary Feature Academy Award, One Direction: This Is Us debuted at 2,735 locations, pulling in a not inconsiderable $8.9 million on Thursday evening / Friday, August 29-30, 2013, which should have meant approximately $20 million by Sunday evening — especially taking into account that Monday is a national holiday. But it was not meant to be. Whereas Justin Bieber: Never Say Never...

Summer 2013 officially comes to an end over Labor Day weekend, which is looking to be even quieter than usual this year. One Direction: This is Us has a good shot at taking first place from Lee Daniels' The Butler, though it's unlikely it reaches the same level as the Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber concert movies. Meanwhile, Getaway and Closed Circuit also open nationwide, though it wouldn't be surprising if both finished under $5 million.Opening at 2,735 theaters, One Direction: This is Us is the latest in a string of 3D concert movies that began with 2008's Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which the highest opening yet for the genre ($31.1 million) and went on to close with $65.3 million. The following year, Michael Jackson's This Is It was even bigger ($72.1 million), while 2011's Justin Bieber: Never Say Never holds the record with $73 million.The...

One Direction may be the biggest boy band in the world right now, but there's one person who is evidently unimpressed.
Taylor Swift, the golden girl of pop who went out with Harry Styles earlier this year, was caught on camera last night at the Vma Awards, when One Direction took to the stage to present an award.
Swift, with Selena Gomez at her side in the audience, was clearly caught on camera mouthing "Shut the f*** up" when One Direction took turns to speak.
Harry, whose relationship with Swift made her the target of some Twitter abuse from One Direction fans, has recently said he fully expects to be the subject of one of Swift's songs, which are famously about her relationships, particularly when they fail.

They had big voices, "as big as Aretha Franklin's," an admirer confesses. But they gave up their dreams, learned to "sacrifice individuality," to step into the background as Ike and Mick, Bette and Bruce, Paul Simon and Ray Charles and legions of others took the spotlight while these lesser lights swayed in time to the music and sang backup, a mere "Twenty Feet from Stardom."
Here's a documentary built on that signature line from Lou Reed's "Take a Walk on the Wild Side," that line written just for the backup singers.

Filmmaker Morgan Neville ("Johnny Cash's America") rounds up a couple of generations of singers -- mostly, but not entirely black -- and gives them their moment in the sun in this revealing study of egos in check, contributions to music history largely unacknowledged.

The ever-so-intense Michael Shannon plays true life hitman Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman, a bloody drama about the family man who claimed to have murdered over 100 people for the mafia. In the biopic, Shannon is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta, James Franco, David Schwimmer, Robert Davi, and Stephen Dorff.
The film is co-written and directed by Ariel Vromen, who has his biggest project yet with Iceman. Vromen has directed two films previously, Danika with Marisa Tomei in 2006, and Rx with Colin Hanks, Lauren Grahan, and Eric Balfour in 2005, which he also co-wrote.
