Oscar voters love to reward the makeup artists and hairstylists who transform some of Hollywood’s most famous faces into historical figures. Since the competitive category of Best Makeup and Hairstyling was introduced at the Academy Awards in 1982, eight films in which performers portray famous folks have won this Oscar. Adam McKay‘s “Vice,” a sly satire on the life and times of politician Dick Cheney, is poised to be the ninth to do so.
Over the two hour plus running time of “Vice,” Christian Bale portrays Cheney from his early years in Wyoming to his eight years as vice president. The actor gained 40 plus pounds and shaved his head to look like the man who was second in command during some of the darkest days in American history.

On the morning of October 27, police in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, found the body of 46-year-old Derick Westley Tucker on the ground near a storage unit. A blood-covered hacksaw and a machete were next to the body. And, chillingly, the killer had scrawled “4 Stop Wait Time” in the victim’s blood.
Detectives believed that the “4” signified the number of murders that the killer believed he had committed. Authorities think he overestimated the number; one of his victims had survived being shot in the neck.

Romney's education plan has a misleading focus on choice, efficiency, transparency and results. But once broken down, the plan's flaws become obvious and untenable.

Romney’s new, innovative approach to education reform comes directly from Milton Friedman, who wrote the following:

Is there some bad blood between BBC Worldwide and Syfy for the American cabler's refusal to pick up shows like "Doctor Who" and "Torchwood"? Or is BBC just smelling opportunity? Syfy could soon be gaining some serious competition in the genre as BBC American and Clerkenwell Films have put together a pair of science-fiction projects that might help establish the American cousin of the government-run British broadcaster as a true creator of original programming. Bbca says it has pushed forward development of "Wired," a robot-style series from Stephen Volk, as well as "The Dead Beat" from John Jackson. "Wired," according to Tg Daily, is set in an alternate universe of Earth that is inhabited not by people, but by Syns, short for "synthetic organisms," that are exact replicas of human ...

I’ve held off on getting the singles of this series so that I can pick up a lovely hardback of Francis Manapul’s gorgeous work. Like Jw Williams III on Batwoman, Manapul plays around with the comic page format to aid in the story telling process, in the process creating some stunning images.

Again like The Flash I’ve held off on getting the singles of this series so that I have more reason to buy the beautiful hardback that I know is coming in 2012. I cannot wait to get my hands on the first arc of the new Batwoman series, and see just how far Williams can push the comic medium.

Direct market comic sales passed $$40 million (£25m) in October. The Comichron reports that overall dollar orders for comics, trade paperbacks, and magazines exceeded the milestone for the first time since September 2009. The research and analysis website confirmed that sales rose by 6.9 percent during September, attributing the increase to DC Comics' 'New 52' relaunch. "While that may sound counter-intuitive, it isn't when you consider that all those first issues continued to have reorders selling through October," said analyst John Jackson Miller. One of my favorite characters of "Mass Effect 2" was The Illusive Man. For one thing, he taught me that "illusive" is actually a word ("based on or having the nature of an illusion," in case you're wondering). For another, he was voiced by Martin Sheen, who put together a fantastic performance as a snide, secretive, powerful individual who loved to sit in his astronomy bubble and judge you for the choices you made.
What we didn't get out of "Mass Effect 2" was a lot of backstory behind The Illusive Man, who he was, how he became so illusive, whathaveyou. He certainly has a reputation in the galaxy, but what made him take control of a once-terrorist organization like Cerberus? If these are the sorts of questions you were left asking by the end of "ME2," BioWare and Dark Horse will be giving you some of the answers in the form...

Go ahead and cut an extra large slice of cake for Fabolous today, as not only has one of the hardest-working MCs in the game earned it, but it also happens to be his birthday. The Brooklyn-born rapper (known to his mom as John Jackson) is now 33 years old. During a trip to my local comic book store, I was searching for Mass Effect: Redemption #1. The first issue came out prior to the game and I was initially on the fence about buying a video game comic book.
However, just a few hours into Mass Effect 2, my enjoyment of the Mass Effect world had grown into an intense love. So, obviously, I wanted anything that would expand my knowledge of the universe.

And signatures keep getting added: here's John Jackson Miller (the other monthly Star Wars writer) adding his name, and George Perez added Wonder Woman-- this to a shirt that already had Warren Ellis, Peter David, Adi Granov, Gail Simone, Whilce Portacio, Jim Valentino, Humberto Ramos, Dan Didio, Erik Larsen, the list goes on and on. (And yes, you'll be getting a list along with the shirt and a certificate of authenticity.)

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...
