New Trailer for Denzel's 'The Book of Eli'

25 September 2009 2:32 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

If you saw the Comic Con trailer for The Book of Eli, some of this will look pretty familiar. There is a change in the way it's structured, though, and we certainly see more footage than we have to this point.

As with any movie trailer, this one sells the selling points, which in some general order are Denzel, The Hughes Brothers, Gary Oldman as a villain, Mila Kunis, and the apocalypse. The apocalypse is so hot right now. Denzel is a good bet more than half the time, and I've been waiting for more from Allen and Albert Hughes for a while now. Oldman is usually slightly better than the material, or even worse than a bad script (*cough* Lost in Space), but I don't think this looks like a catastrophe, so he should be fine.

The choice to go with the supersaturated colors may backfire over the duration »

New Trailer for Book of Eli

25 September 2009 9:25 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Action and atmosphere remain high on the menu in the new trailer for the Hughes brothers' post-apocalyptic spaghetti western The Book of Eli.

Eli (Denzel Washington) lays out the story with the voice of a prophet, sure of his destiny as the only one who can save the world 30 winters after "the sun tore a whole in the sky." He carries the book with all the answers and will not give it up lightly, as those who mess with him along the way soon discover.

All this sets up a major conflict with Carnegie (Gary Oldman), who runs the desolate desert town Eli has wandered into. Here we get a glimpse of the beginnings of what looks to be a pretty explosive showdown.

Denzel Washington, Meat Sandwiches And The Book Of Eli

At Comic-Con, film directors the  Hughes Brothers and the cast of “Book Of Eli” came to chat about the upcoming action epic starring the ever cheerful Denzel Washington. Whatever you do though, don’t call it Post Apocalyptic, remember it’s Post Event-alyptic. Though the film follows Denzel Washington as he stalks the mean and dusty byways of a torn and ravaged Earth, protecting something of great value that may usher into being a new hope for a devastated civilization, remember that this is no ordinary clone of Max Max or The Road. This film has a different mojo. “[We're] trying to set it aside from the other movies that are out there and find colors that work and hit your eye pretty quickly to say, ‘Ok, that doesn’t look like, say, The Road or Mad Max,’” Albert Hughes said. “Mad Max or The Road had that color. It’s as simple as that sometimes. »

Comic-Con: Wild Things, "Hex" and Miyazaki

27 July 2009 6:33 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

"This is getting weird...I like it," Josh Brolin said midway through the audience Q&A of Warner Bros.' presentation of "Jonah Hex." Sitting alongside director Jimmy Hayward and co-stars Michael Fassbender and Megan Fox a mere 48 hours after the film wrapped production, Brolin was clearly enjoying the moment, teasing the audience that the only comic book he read as a kid was "Richie Rich" when asked if he was a fan of "Hex"'s source material and smirking after five minutes of footage showed his scarred cowboy twirling six-shooters and tossing pickaxes at anyone who mocks his appearance. As Brolin emphasized, the film "looks as if it cost $70 million, but cost less than half" that amount, mainly because "there's a circus element to it" and the cast, which includes John Malkovich, were in it "truly for the love of insanity."

That extended to Fassbender, who plays Malkovich's main henchman, »

Stunning 'The Book of Eli' trailer debuts online

23 July 2009 8:01 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

To be honest, I wasn't quite sure what to think about Allen and Albert Hughes' upcoming drama "The Book of Eli," a sort of post-apocalyptic western starring Denzel Washington in the lead. Now that I saw the film's teaser trailer, however, I admit I'm quite excited about this project.

The story follows Washington as Eli, a badass hero who travels across America to pass on the knowledge of what could be society’s only way to redemption. Protecting this knowledge, however, seems to be quite a challenge, but Eli will stop at nothing to complete his mission.

The trailer below looks quite stunning, and even though it only shows Washington strolling across plenty of wasteland and showing viewers he's not someone to be messed with, the footage managed to grab my attention. I am indeed intrigued by "The Book of Eli," which opens Jan. 15, 2010.

Also part of the cast are Gary Oldman, »

‘Book of Eli’ Poster, Trailer and Script Details

23 July 2009 9:42 AM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

The websites crawling through the crowds at Comic-Con have snapped a few pictures of the new Book of Eli one sheet hanging at the convention center.  It features star Denzel Washington walking in a post-apocalyptic world with just a pack and the clothes on his back.  The poster actually reminds me a little of Will Smith’s I Am Legend.

Directed by Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes (From Hell, Dead Presidents), the story centers on a man (Washington) protecting a sacred book that contains answers to saving America.  A villain named Carnegie (Gary Oldman) seeks out Eli to capture it and sends his main goon (Ray Stevenson).  Along the way he picks up a young female sidekick (Mila Kunis).

Update2: The trailer was just released on Apple.com and has clips of Washington kicking some ass.

Filmmakers Insist The Book of Eli Is Not a Western

29 May 2009 12:24 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Although it admittedly has a lot of the trappings of a classic western set in a sci-fi future -- a small western town, a saloon, gunfights, etc. -- filmmakers say that The Book of Eli is no cowboy flick. Co-Director Albert Hughes was quite emphatic about this point during a recent set visit by the crew at Sci-Fi Wire:

[It's] the thing that the studio has been scared of and Warner Brothers, even, like, "It's not a western, it's not a western, it's not a western," And it's not a western, because ... it is set in the West, but it's not from ... that time period. Fair enough, but setting a western in the future is hardly unprecedented (think Firefly), and not necessarily a bad thing either. Even Hughes admits that in this project he was strongly influenced by Sergio Leone and had originally considered filming in Almeria, Spain, where the the »
