The strike may have delayed and abbreviated the third season of Abbott Elementary but Quinta Brunson went into it feeling pretty confident that her comedy wasn’t going anywhere: she was told that ABC had picked up the series for a fourth season.
While appearing at Deadline’s Contenders TV on Sunday, Brunson — who was joined on stage by Tyler James Williams (Gregory), Chris Perfetti (Jacob) and William Stanford Davis (Mr. Johnson) — recalled how incredible it felt to know that “ABC trusted us” before they even began production on season 3.
The news of the pickup was made public in February at the Television Critics Associaton press tour.
The comedy just wrapped production last week on the third season. Brunson, who plays Janine in the comedy that she created for ABC, said she still marvels at how far her Emmy-winning comedy has come.

When William Stanford Davis auditioned for Friends, he thought he absolutely nailed his performance.
“I thought I killed it. Oh my God. And I’m getting ready to do a touchdown dance when the phone got silent. Like really, dead cold silent. And they said, ‘They think maybe Stan should go back to being a telemarketer.

The word of the day is bureaucracy, and Janine has gotten a face full of it.
This week on Abbott Elementary Season 3 Episode 3, our favorite teachers have found themselves in some tricky conflicts.
We also got some out-of-character moments for more than one of our friends at Abbott.
The episode kicks off with a strange revelation -- Tariq is dating the mother of one of Barbara Howard's students. We're not sure how to feel about this since it means Tariq will probably be around the school more often.
Can't we leave the past behind us? Clearly not.
Barbara starts mentoring Tariq throughout the episode, which, on the surface, is super weird, but maybe that's naive.
Barbara's soft spot for her students is no secret, so why wouldn't she want to encourage Tariq to build a real relationship with his pseudo-step-child?
Even if he is being ridiculous about it.

Abbott Elementary isn’t going anywhere.
The comedy series has been renewed for Season 4 at ABC, as announced by Willard R. Abbott Elementary’s own Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) during Disney’s Television Critics Association Press Tour.
The renewal comes on the heels of the much-anticipated Season 3 premiere, which was delayed due to last year’s strikes. The episode not only gave a fitting explanation for why the camera crews had missed the first half of the school year but also had some supersized guest stars.

“Abbott Elementary,” the Emmy-award-winning sitcom created by Quinta Brunson, has returned for its third season, and the series remains just as witty and fun as it’s always been. However, the mega-sized opener titled “Career Day Part 1 & 2” suggests the comedy is ready to tackle one of the most significant issues facing the public education system in America – teacher burnout.
In previous seasons, audiences have witnessed the Abbott teachers bend and twist themselves in knots to get adequate resources while dealing with a self-centered and inept (though hilarious) principal, Ava Coleman (Janelle James). Veteran educators Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), now decades in to the profession, have mastered the art of delivering with less. Meanwhile, Janine Teagues (Brunson) and Jacob Hill’s (Chris Perfetti) naïveté and love of educating have enabled them to imagine a future for Abbott students that likely won’t come to fruition.

“Abbott Elementary” is back in the Emmy race again with its sophomore season after achieving multiple awards successes at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In its first Emmy outing, the show was a threat to win Best Comedy Series, having picked up writing and casting awards, along with a Best Supporting Actress victory for Sheryl Lee Ralph. This year it added to its tally with an additional nomination, garnering eight against last year’s seven, and all notably for a full network season of 22 episodes. Read on for a closer look at “Abbott Elementary’s” eight Emmy nominations.

This story about Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Tyler James Williams and “Abbott Elementary” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
If Quinta Brunson is the heart of “Abbott Elementary,” the Emmy-winning ABC comedy she exec-produces, writes and stars in, the show’s supporting cast is its soul. Set in a struggling Philadelphia public school, the series has been praised for its realistic depiction of America’s education system, while also finding humor and hope hiding in plain sight.
The show’s first two seasons worked hard to elucidate the plight of the American schoolteacher, but that’s far from the only lesson that “Abbott Elementary” has been serving up to viewers. Forget about English, say “see you later” to math, because according to its cast, the series is all about chemistry.

Jennifer Garner’s first starring role in a TV series, as a butt-kicking spy on 2001’s “Alias,” made her an international star and launched a movie career that includes “13 Going on 30” and “Electra.” And Sheryl Lee Ralph has spent decades building a formidable list of acting credits on TV — from the ’80s soap “Search for Tomorrow” to “Moesha” — but she’s finally getting her due as the motherly teacher Barbara Howard in “Abbott Elementary.” Garner, whose family members count themselves “Abbott” fans, recently returned to the small screen as a stepmother, Hannah, dealing with the disappearance of her husband in Apple TV+’s “The Last Thing He Told Me.” Days after Garner’s birthday, the two discuss their favorite topics: motherhood, generous co-stars and dessert.
Sheryl Lee Ralph: Happy birthday. Did you have cake?

“Abbott Elementary” creator Quinta Brunson clapped back Thursday at an education executive who was promoting incorrect information about her schooling history.
Jeanne Allen, CEO of the Center for Education Reform, called Brunson out on Twitter, claiming that she only attended charter schools for her entire education. The incorrect claim additionally implied that exploring charter schools’ relationship to public schooling in Philadelphia, as “Abbott Elementary” does, is not best left to the series’ creator.
“I’ll share it again. The creator, lead writer and co-producer of @AbbottElemABC @quintabrunson is from West Philly and attended charter schools her entire education,” Allen wrote on Twitter. “She reportedly loved it at the time, heaped praise on it. Once upon a time. Guess money talks.”

“The Office” star Rainn Wilson is getting real about what he perceives as an “anti-Christian bias” in the entertainment industry after a recent episode of HBO’s “The Last of Us” introduced a pastor whose character took a turn for the worse.
“I do think there is an anti-Christian bias in Hollywood,” Wilson tweeted Saturday. “As soon as the David character in ‘The Last of Us’ started reading from the Bible I knew that he was going to be a horrific villain. Could there be a Bible-reading preacher on a show who is actually loving and kind?”
Wilson, who played Dwight in the beloved sitcom and has previously opened up about being a follower of the Baha’i faith, specifically took issue with David, the pastor of a small Wyoming congregation who is introduced in “The Last of Us” Episode 8 titled “When We Are in Need.”

If you haven't already fallen in love with the must-watch series, "Abbott Elementary," what exactly are you waiting for? The Emmy Award-winning mockumentary sitcom about an underfunded public school in Philadelphia was created by the incomparable Quinta Brunson and has been taking the world by storm since it premiered at the end of 2021. The series is a delightfully, and sometimes painfully accurate look at the public education system in the United States, boasting a staff of hilarious characters and even funnier students.
Over the first two seasons, "Abbott Elementary" has explored topics like what happens when an entire school of kids is given way too much candy on Halloween, how to handle a phenomenon of kids aimlessly following a viral trend, and how an old-school teacher like Sheryl Lee Ralph's Barbara Howard can learn to co-exist with a student's mom who has "B****" tattooed across her chest. This doesn't...

Quinta Brunson, who created, executive produces, writes, and stars in ABC's hit sitcom "Abbott Elementary," is the show's heart and soul. The legendary Sheryl Lee Ralph, who plays kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard, is the show's Mvp. But Janelle James, who plays the snarky, sneaky, and downright hilarious principal Ava Coleman, is undoubtedly its breakout star.
Ever since "Abbott Elementary" premiered in December 2021, it's been a hit among fans and critics alike. Brunson pulled bits of inspiration from other successful series -- the fourth-wall-breaking mockumentary shooting gimmick of "The Office" and the terminally cheerful heroine surrounded by a muck of setbacks and skeptics character setup of "Parks and Recreation" come to mind. But she's fashioned an entirely unique creation that has edged beyond its forerunners and into its own. The show's big heart, low stakes comedy, and commitment to spotlighting the challenges teachers face in performing their vital social roles have minted it as television gold.

As much as fans have desperately been craving the hookup between Janine and Gregory, this episode did not touch that subject matter. And yet, somehow, it was the funniest episode in a while.
Abbott Elementary Season 2 Episode 15 was laugh-out-loud funny. The characters were at their bests. It was an intelligent move to distract from the heavy Janine-Gregory will they or won't they drama.
The episode cracked the hard, poised veneer of Barbara Howard's perfection. It represents how sometimes we forget to check on the people we consider "strong."
Barbara was going through a personal ordeal, but she hid it well until she couldn't hide it any longer.
The multiple attempts to protest the difficulties she was having were silly yet realistic because people who are perfectionists tend to remain in denial when they need help.
Barbara is very proud, and it was embarrassing to cause a fire that created such a vast district-wide response.

Sheryl Lee Ralph Sang the Black National Anthem, ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing,’ at the 2023 Super Bowl
Emmy Award winner Sheryl Lee Ralph took to the field at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before kickoff at Super Bowl Lvii. The Black national anthem is a recent addition to pre-game ceremonies at NFL games, and the original Dreamgirls star did the song justice with her soaring vocals.

Abbott Elementary is consistently a solid laugh-out-loud thirty minutes of comedy.
Abbott Elementary Season 2 Episode 13 gave the audience precisely what they wanted.
We saw Principal Ava Coleman scamming and being vain. We saw Mr. Jacob Hill and Mr. Johnson being zany and bizarre. We saw Mrs. Barbara Howard being prim, proper, and pious.
These elements of the show make it a joy to watch and this week was no exception!
First thing first, this episode gave the fans what they needed regarding confirmation of Gregory's feelings for Janine.
As Janine was courted and wooed by his close friend, Maurice, we saw Jealousy rear his ugly head.
The ordinarily level-headed Mr. Eddie could not keep his feelings to himself as he listened to his co-workers supporting Janine in preparation for her date with Maurice.
He was visibly annoyed when they all kept calling him the uber-familiar moniker of "Mo," as though...

Is it too soon to pick the best episodes of “Abbott Elementary,” which has been on the air for just over a year? It wasn’t too soon to put it on every end of year list IndieWire put together, so we say no.
On December 7, 2021, ABC premiered the pilot of Quinta Brunson’s elementary school mockumentary, about a spirited and underfunded Philadelphia public school. Brunson stars as second-grade teacher Janine Teagues, a second-year teacher yet to be worn down by the administration. Her optimism clashes with but endears her to senior teachers Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter) as they band with fellow newbie Jacob Hill (Chris Perfetti) and aspiring principal but current substitute Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams) against the incompetence of principal Ava Coleman (Janelle James). The teachers and students of Abbott quickly found a place in the hearts of American TV...

If you're not watching "Abbott Elementary" yet, the ABC sitcom deserves a spot at the tippy top of your watchlist. Created by comedian Quinta Brunson, who stars as incessantly optimistic second-grade teacher Janine Teagues, the record-smashing mockumentary series follows the lives of educators working at a fictional Philadelphia public school. Its laugh-out-loud-funny moments are played out by an all-star ensemble cast that includes Tyler James Williams, Janelle James (Ava Coleman), Lisa Ann Walter, Sheryl Lee Ralph (Barbara Howard), Chris Perfetti (Jacob Hill), and William Stanford Davis (Mr. Johnson).
Although some of the characters may occasionally butt heads, they're still a big, happy family, and the actors have a similarly tight bond off set. Brunson worked with both Williams and Lee Ralph in the past on HBO's "A Black Lady Sketch Show," which explains their seamless onscreen chemistry. Williams previously opened up to Popsugar about reuniting with Brunson for the project,...
