Trevor Horn’s Echoes: Ancient & Modern finds the veteran musician and producer attempting to recontextualize some of the biggest pop hits of the past 40 years within the sounds of contemporary pop and electronic music. At best the results are bland, and at worst they exemplify Gen-x nostalgia at its most saccharine.
The album opens, rather unexpectedly, with a cover of Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank),” featuring a characteristically impassioned vocal performance by Tori Amos. The arrangement and production, however, are so sanitized, so slick and gussied up with melodramatic strings and synths, that the point of the song—its central irony and message about the dangers of generational alcoholism—is swallowed whole.
Horn imbues the album’s 11 songs with a grandiosity that quickly becomes flatulent, with big orchestral swells and heart-tugging keyboards. By the halfway point, the material all starts to blur together, as the majority of the songs...

Tori Amos and The Buggles’ Trevor Horn have teamed up for a cover of Kendrick Lamar’s 2012 single, “Swimming Pools (Drank),” reimagining it as a moody, modern piano ballad.
Amos and Horn’s take on the song arrives as the opening track on Horn’s new covers album, Echoes: Ancient & Modern. Built around a subdued piano and colored with silky strings, Amos’ multi-layered vocals lead the tune, placing Lamar’s lyricism in a new context. In the liner notes for the new album, Horn explained: “I thought of it as a kind of literate, modern American standard, a rap song open to reinterpretation. I wanted something distinctly 21st-century with original, eloquent lyrics, and my longtime engineer Tim Weidner suggested this.”
Continuing, Horn praised Amos’ creative contributions. “Tori Amos took the idea of adapting Kendrick Lamar’s psyched-up swagger in her stride and made it intensely cinematic,” he said. “I listened...

Paul McCartney claims a few “stocking fillers” are in his massive catalog. In other words, he doesn’t believe that they are the “main Christmas present.” Here are the songs the former Beatle considers throwaways.

In his book, The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul explained that he thinks his and Wings’ song “Let ‘Em In” is a “stocking filler.” That’s how he thinks of some of his songs. “It’s a fun little item, but it’s not your main Christmas present,” he wrote.
Paul said he can get perfectionist about things and think, “This is just not one of my grand pieces.” Then, he’ll get a “bit down” on those songs. For instance, he remembers being very down about his song “Bip Bop.”

There are many references in Paul McCartney‘s “Let ‘Em In,” some more conscious than others. Paul often said that things subconsciously inspired him. Only later did he realize where certain ideas came from.

Paul McCartney has written hundreds of songs throughout his career, but not every single one is a hit. There are a few that McCartney regrets writing or wishes he could have made better. He hates one song he wrote for his second band, Wings, and said the ‘lyrics are f***ing awful.’

Rolling Stone‘s interview series King for a Day features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and singers who had the difficult job of fronting major rock bands after the departure of an iconic vocalist. Some of them stayed in their bands for years, while others lasted just a few months. In the end, however, they all found out that replacement singers can themselves be replaced. The Buggles could have gone in a lot of different directions once their debut single “Video Killed the Radio Star” became a huge hit all over the world in late 1979. The synth duo (featuring Trevor Horn on lead vocals and Geoff Downes on keyboards) could have spent the next couple of years touring the world to to capitalize on their new fame. They could have headed right back into the studio and tried to craft an even poppier song. They could have even gone their separate ways under the assumption...

By the late-1980s, Paul McCartney may have been the only artist on the planet uninterested in sounding like the Beatles. But then his new collaborator, fellow British superstar Elvis Costello, reunited him with an old friend: his iconic violin-shaped Hofner bass. The instrument had last seen action during the band’s final live performance on the roof of their London offices almost two decades before, and a faded setlist from their last tour remained affixed to the side with yellowed scotch tape. “He was a big Beatles fan and said, ‘Hey, do you still use your Hofner?’” McCartney tells People exclusively.

It was 20 years ago today.
No, it’s nothing about “Sgt. Pepper”, but rather two decades exactly since Lucas, A.J, Cory and the gang banded together to save Empire Records.
For those unfamiliar, “The Empire” was one of the last great vestiges of independent music ownership and the scene of one of the great cult classics of the 1990s. The unfamiliar can be excused, however, since the film was, by and large, a failure. It grossed just over $300,000 in the States and was gone from theatres just two weeks after its late 1995 release. So, why the fuss?
It gained popularity with a certain age group – pretty much anyone currently in their 30s – thanks to early performances from some would be stars (Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger most notably) and its all-timer of a soundtrack.
But why celebrate 20 years of the cult classic in April instead of on its Sept.

To the overabundance of text, sounds, images—and moving images—in Tony Scott, we reply with something like our own. So let me (try to) keep this (almost as) short as a Tony Scott shot. Scott’s death this past summer would elicit film critics’ own counterpart to American politics: opinions and generalizations bandied between two camps who were, as always, preaching to their respective choirs. And needless to say, such discourses would be about as useful, informative, and interesting as American politics. For Scott’s work was hardly encamped: the outward liberalism of Enemy of the State, perhaps Hollywood’s most overt attack on our surveillance nation and the Nsa, possible only before 9/11, concludes that only Nsa aspirants can take down the Nsa, just as Man on Fire,...

Publishers Australia chairman Geoff Hird still believes in print. He explains why
I believe in magazines.
In fact, I will go so far as to say, I believe in Print magazines.
So much so, that in the past two weeks I have launched a new one, and bought another.
It’s quite simple, really – both were well considered, well researched, business decisions.
In launching Technology Decisions into the print wasteland of It media, we are definitely swimming upstream. However, recent research across our tech, engineering and science audiences showed us that print magazines are still a preferred delivery platform for their business-to-business information (over 50%).
While some may point to our closure of Voice+Data (11 issues) and the launch of Technology Decisions (7 issues) as a reduction of print frequency, the purchase of Australian Life Scientist (6 issues) from Idg, and a special (extra) expo edition of What’s New in Food Technology...

Trevor Horn has never acted. He is a bit of a brainiac, and a winner of Jeopardy Teen Challenge. Horn reportedly deals with issues shared by Oscar, the narrator and lead character in the book and film, a hyper focused and curious adolescent whose single minded obsession sends him on a journey of discovery. Horn is brilliant, and puts in one of the greatest child performances of the year. Two years before the story begins, on 9/11, his father (Tom Hanks) jumped to his death from one of the World Trade Center towers. They shared a remarkably close connection and intellectual curiosity about the world and how it operates. His father accepted his intellectual passion and the conditions...

In 1980, the progressive-rock group Yes did the unthinkable: It released an album without the soaring, distinctive vocals of founding frontman Jon Anderson. That album, Drama, features Trevor Horn of The Buggles on the microphone, and it’s become a footnote in Yes’ catalog. More than 30 years later, the band has released its second Anderson-free record, Fly From Here. Sung by recent recruit Benoît David—an Anderson disciple poached from a Yes cover band—Fly From Here seems preordained to suffer the same fate as Drama. The Take Me Home Tonight soundtrack. Ooh, it was like The Scarlet Pimpernel. Sort of. This ’80s-set ensemble comedy for ‘young people’ was shot back in 2007 before being left to languish on the shelf, then saved from the guillotine of no-release oblivion by Ryan Kavanaugh, the masked baronet of Relativity Media. Hurrah! A pity though that Eddie Money doesn’t seem to have survived the ordeal. His 1986 hit which gives the movie its title is conspicuously absent from this soundtrack, despite having cropped up in the trailer.
Not that there is any shortage of ’80s radio monsters here. This is a paean to pop music’s past, an extended celebration of those hook-laden hits which detractors would rush to peg as lowest common denominator, but which equally can deliver high levels of idiot-grin enjoyment for those willing to check their musical ego at the door. There were, however, many arts practitioners on the list. Is the Diary the only one surprised (and pleased) to see Steve McQueen get a Cbe, given the artist's marathon battle with the establishment to get the Iraq war dead printed on stamps? Among the other recipients of a Cbe – and the Diary apologises to the names omitted here – are producer Trevor Horn, sculptor Richard Wentworth, theatre director Howard Davies, choreographer Wayne McGregor, trumpeter John Wallace, actors Sheila Hancock and David Suchet, and composer Howard Goodall. OBEs went to Annie Lennox, folkie Richard Thompson, director Andrea Arnold, actor Burt Kwouk, costume designer Sandy Powell and composer Colin Matthews. And there are damehoods for actor Harriet Walter, mezzo-soprano turned professor Felicity Palmer and writer Antonia Fraser.

British singer Lily Allen has been crowned the queen of the prestigious Ivor Novello songwriting awards after winning three top prizes at the ceremony on Thursday, May 20. The "Smile" hitmaker was in "floods of tears" after picking up honors for best song musically and lyrically, as well as most performed work, both for her single "The Fear".
She also scooped the coveted songwriter of the year award, considered to be one of the most prestigious record industry honors. The Pogues frontman is to cover Screaming Jay Hawkins's I Put a Spell On You ... with a little help from the Bad Seed and Captain Jack Sparrow
Nick Cave, Johnny Depp and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie are among those reportedly roped-in for a new charity single led by Shane MacGowan. The Pogues frontman is assembling a gang of pals to record a cover of I Put a Spell On You, raising money for the Haiti earthquake relief.
According to the Sun, MacGowan flew from his home in Ireland to begin recording in London this week. Depp might seem an unlikely collaborator for Cave and Gillespie, but the actor has plenty of experience as a musician – first with his high-school band Kids and more recently with Babybird.
