It would have been very easy for Words on Bathroom Walls to take a simplistic approach to the story that it’s telling. Young Adult novels that get turned into movies tend to lean on heavy themes, but don’t always tackle them in particularly mature ways. This one, however, is willing to go that route, allowing themes of mental illness to get the gravitas that it deserves. Much like The Fault in Our Stars managed to overcome its Ya routes to become something more, this one is able to as well. It’s not on the level of that Ya tearjerker, but it’s a quality new release well worth your time this week. The film is a teen drama, following Adam (Charlie Plummer), who seems to be your garden variety high schooler. Everything on the outside makes him appear to be a young adult like any other, even...

Set in the ’70s and focused on the teenage years of one of the world's most infamous serial killers, My Friend Dahmer left an indelible mark on 2017 cinema thanks to its unsettling story, powerful performances, and emotional music. In a new installment of our Q&A features, Daily Dead caught up with composer Andrew Hollander to discuss creating the score for Marc Meyers' haunting coming-of-age film.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Andrew, When did you initially become interested in music and what did you listen to in your formative years?
Andrew Hollander: I first became interested in music when I was a little kid listening to records that my older sisters had. It was a lot of stuff from the ’70s: Elton John, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Who... I would just go into my room, close the door and listen to records for hours.

Marking a potentially monumental pivot point in his already eclectic career, stand-up comedian turned actor/director/producer/screenwriter Mike Birbiglia has taken his personal tale of failed relationships, comedic development, and serious sleep disorders from the stage to the page and finally to the big screen. The conversion between mediums is flawless, gaining a variety of story expanding tricks this time around that can only come with the visual format. Sleepwalk With Me, winner of the Audience Award at Sundance last year, aches with the anxieties of long term relationship commitment and the struggles of a fledgling comedian while Birbiglia wittily breaks character to orate his tale directly to the audience a la Woody Allen in Annie Hall.
In order to avoid misrepresentation of the people in his life, Birbiglia’s story has been marginally fictionalized. Mike is now Matt , but they are one and the same. To everyone but him,...
