The writer-director on the comic genius of the Vicar of Dibley and Notting Hill star, who was a complex mixture of confident and insecure and who gave joy to millions

Well, of course, I’d rather I wasn’t writing this at all. It was a terrible shock and sorrow to lose Emma.
From where I stood she was a remarkable and passionate woman with an amazing capacity for love and laughter and joy. And she was a truly wonderful actress with a particular genius for comedy. When people watched her in our Dibley show, they not only laughed – they also loved her and what they were loving was something real in Emma the person, an openness, a craziness, a sweetness. My daughter posted a picture of Emma on her Instagram account when...

Chee Keong Cheung brings a fanboyish glee to a gory post-apocalyptic rescue tale that flatlines after a promising premise
It’s been 16 years since Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and just over a decade since its sequel – which is to say a fair while has passed since a zombie movie scaled up to theatrical proportions rather than shuffling towards video on demand.
This legitimately widescreen indie endeavour, in which emerging tyro Chee Keong Cheung curates apocalyptic visions of Albion on interesting Rochdale and Glasgow locations, is ultimately undermined by rookie errors but otherwise takes a half-decent shot at using its modest budget to fill that gap.

Russ Abbot, Bullseye, Noel Edmonds and a film we all watched in the same room. Christmas TV was more exciting in the 80s...
Cast your mind back to when Christmas Day wasn't about Doctor Who followed by sticking something on Netflix until it was time to go watch the annual fist fight outside the pub.
See related Looking back at Martin Scorsese's The King Of Comedy The Wolf Of Wall Street review The Wolf Of Wall Street & Scorsese's confrontational films
In the 80s, Christmas was about seeing which fantastic fare the TV had decided to bless us with. Of course, the more prepared among us knew this well in advance, having eagerly pored over the Radio Times/TV Times to check that Jimmy Cricket's Family Laugh 'n' Waz would be shown. There it was – right after Reflections On The Eucharist With The Reverend Paul Leyland.

It's been 18 years since Alan Partridge first mooted the notion of Youth Hostelling with Chris Eubank - and as of last week, the project is a dream no longer.
Eubank's team-up with Hostelworld is, of course, a deliberate tip of the hat to Steve Coogan's comic creation - but too often the telly schedules are plagued with examples of #AccidentalPartridge.
Behold, 12 shows that sound like they sprang straight from Alan's fertile mind - this little lot are on a par with Inner City Sumo or Arm Wrestling with Chas 'n' Dave.
1. Flockstars
Celebrity shepherding - Lesley Joseph goes from Birds to sheep and Fazer from N-Dubz lends livestock some street cred.
No-one makes a pun on Amanda Lamb's name, though. Missed opportunity.
2. Gordon Behind Bars
"Cooking in prison" was a format that Alan Partridge actually pitched to Tony Hayers, but it took foul-mouthed foodie Gordon Ramsay to make it a reality.

Someone pick up the phone to Alan Partridge, because Youth Hostelling with Chris Eubank has finally happened in real life.
Well, sort of.
Former boxing champion Chris was left baffled earlier this month as Twitter users quizzed him over a famous scene in I'm Alan Partridge where Steve Coogan's hapless broadcaster pitches some downright baffling ideas for TV shows to BBC controller of programmes Tony Hayers.
However, Alan's dream has now become a reality - and it seems like Chris enjoyed his visit to the Yha in Brighton, testing out the bunk beds and the WiFi as well as entertaining the guests.
"My inaugural visit to a youth hostel was enlightening and delightful!" he wrote on Twitter. "Expect the unexpected!"
David Schneider, who played Tony in 'A Room with an Alan', was absolutely delighted by the surprising turn of events.
Behold! It has happened. #DeliberatePartridge

It’s taken some time for the man behind Monkey Tennis and Arm Wrestling With Chas And Dave to get around to making his big screen debut, but word has leaked from Alan Partridge’s Norfolk base that we’ll be seeing the results on August 13 next year when The Alan Partridge Movie arrives. We’re just a little excited about this and we’re willing to bet that you are too.Partridge certainly is. Chas Hodges has said that the decision to play one last gig as Chas & Dave is up to his former bandmate Dave Peacock. The duo announced their split yesterday following the death of Dave's wife Sue in July. On the prospect of a farewell gig, Chas told NME: "That would be entirely up to Dave, a farewell gig. I'd be up for it if Dave wants to do it - but I've left it entirely up to Dave. "He said to me about a month ago. (more)...

Pop duo Chas Hodges and Dave Peacock have announced that they will no longer be performing together. Peacock confirmed that he is retiring from the music business, while Hodges will continue with touring commitments under the new name Chas And His Band, reports the BBC. Peacock's decision comes shortly after the death of his wife Sue, who passed away in July from lung cancer. "Sue was instrumental behind the scenes for Chas & Dave, working tirelessly on the side of the business that musicians just aren't good at," said the pop veterans in a statement. "It's accurate to say that without Sue and [Hodges's wife] Joan, (more)...

Directed and co-written by Nick Moran, Telstar, the biopic of '60s pop producer Joe Meek, is out this week and judging by this clip it'll offer music lovers a bumper bag of psychedelic delights.Pop impresario Meek has a uncanny genius for turning out deliriously other-worldly records in the late '50s and early '60s. His tracks had catchy tunes that propelled them to the top of the charts - think Buddy Holly played by the Max Rebo Band - while his darker, obsessional side meant he was unafraid to draw a gun on his musicians when the situation demanded. The Phil Spector-like producer is played by Con O'Neill with Kevin Spacey as his business partner Major Banks. Ralf Little is Chas Hodges, better know as one half of Chas and Dave, who worked with Meek as a session musician in his pre-Snooker Loopy days.Telstar is out this Friday 19 June.
