Author and friend Carl Hiaasen recently recalled how despite his cancer diagnosis, nothing would get singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett down – not even a wild shark.
Buffett died at age 76 from a rare form of skin cancer. He was receiving treatment for Merkel cell carcinoma for about four years, but still toured and went fishing with friends. Hiaasen recounted a 2022 fishing trip with Buffett where he came face to face with a large lemon shark. And Buffett was determined to land the big fish.
Jimmy Buffett insisted on landing the shark
Hiaasen recalled how Buffett’s doctors told him to take it easy. But the singer couldn’t resist a fishing excursion.
“I was with Jimmy in the Bahamas in October of 2022,” Hiaasen told People. “He was supposed to take it easy although he didn’t know what that meant. He was fishing when a large lemon shark was heading for him.

The term “Florida man” comes from a meme. The joke is that all the unbelievable news headlines that come out of the Sunshine State are all the work of one man, Florida Man, “the world’s worst superhero.” As any Floridian (or ex-Floridian) will tell you, Florida is a special place. Nowhere else in America has the specific combination of traits – warm weather, easily navigable ports, favorable tax laws – that creates the conditions for lunacy to flourish.
Netflix’s limited series “Florida Man,” for which the streaming service released a premiere date and teaser trailer on Friday, taps into the Florida Man phenomenon. It isn’t about the Florida Man, but it is about a Florida man fighting against his nature. He thought he had escaped Florida, but the swamp is hard to get out of. Bill Lawrence, the top comedy showrunner at the moment amid the enormous critical and commercial success of Ted Lasso, is staying put at Warner Bros. TV Group through 2028. After lengthy negotiations, Emmy winner Lawrence, who had a little time left on his current overall pact at the studio, has closed a blockbuster new five-year deal for his Doozer production company, I have learned. Noone is commenting but sources value the pact at more than $100 million, catapulting Lawrence in the very top tear of TV showrunners.
Like other overall agreements of that caliber in the era of Peak TV, the path to this one was not straight-forward, with some sources I spoke to calling it a wild ride. I hear Warner Bros. originally balked at Lawrence’s financial ask. Because he is still under an overall arrangement at the studio, the Scrubs creator could not go on the open market and officially test the waters.

Though it’s fair to say Vince Vaughn never really went away, you could argue that his A-list status has diminished over the past decade, as he has become pickier regarding his roles, often appearing in indies like “Brawl in Cell Block 99” and “Dragged Across Concrete” or straight dramas like “True Detective.” But last year, we saw him show up in “Freaky,” a major Blumhouse horror film, as well as the Hulu comedy film, “The Binge.” And for his next project, Vaughn might be leaping back into the mainstream in a big way with “Bad Monkey.”

The CW is moving forward with its in-the-works Roswell reboot, placing a pilot order for a new one-hour series set in the infamous UFO town. The pickup comes just days after the network commissioned a pilot for an update of another WB classic, Charmed.

In addition to Roswell 2.0 — which is being penned by Originals scribe Carina Adly MacKenzie — the network gave the green light to an adaptation of the novel Skinny Dip, the mortuary-esque dramedy Playing Dead, and the alien thriller The End of the World as We Know It.

This tale of a federal agent who went undercover among Colombian drug lords, adapted from Robert Mazur’s memoir, is indulgent and interminable
