A snooty eligible bachelor gets his comeuppance in an ‘alt-historical’ tale told with precisely the right amount of seriousness – and no more
To watch this engagingly silly and self-aware comedy is like inhaling a good-sized tank of nitrous oxide. Adapted by Suzanne Allain from her own novel and directed by Emma Holly Jones making her feature debut, it is a romantic Regency romp in the diverse, postcolonial “alt-history” universe popularised by Bridgerton on TV. And casting people of colour as fictional British aristocrats in the declining years of George III need be no more of an affectation than having non-white people play factual kings in Shakespeare’s history plays.
This good-natured entertainment is certainly more watchable than the wince-makingly smug new version of Jane Austen’s Persuasion on Netflix, which misjudges the same approach. Mr Malcolm’s List understands its parameters and limitations and the value of leaving the fourth wall unbroken,...

Actress Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury in the Netflix series ‘Bridgerton’, says she is not fazed by the sex scenes in the show. She said: “I wasn’t shocked. I grew up on my mum’s Georgette Heyer and Jean Plaidy library books, where I learned a lot about history and sex.” Andoh’s character will “look […]...

Shonda Rhimes and writer-turned-showrunner Chris Van Dusen go back 17 years, to his first job as her assistant just out of USC’s Peter Stark Producing Program. He soon transitioned to a writer on “Grey’s Anatomy” and was co-executive producer of “Scandal” before taking on “Bridgerton,” Shondaland and Van Dusen’s first scripted series at Netflix, where Rhimes has a rich TV deal. Those years built a valuable shorthand for their shared sensibilities that came in handy on “Bridgerton,” Netflix’s most-watched show ever — 82 million households watched in its first 28 days, per the streamer’s own unconfirmed reports — which yielded 12 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.
Rhimes cheered on Van Dusen’s vision of a new slant on the period romance. “From the beginning, she gave me the creative room and freedom to make the period show I’ve always wanted to see,” said Van Dusen on the phone. “I never...

There are a lot of great voices. The ones that capture you with their signature sound, whether it’s Garrison Keller leading A Prairie Home Companion, Morgan Freeman narrating The Shawshank Redemption, Sam Elliott’s drawl in truck commercials, Alan Rickman reading sonnets by William Shakespeare, Maya Angelou reading her own works aloud or actors Sir Ian McKellen and Michael Gambon emoting onstage.
There is also Richard Armitage, whose trademark baritone has spawned a decade-long career in voice work in addition to his celebrated screen and stage roles, which currently includes Kenneth in Roundabout Theatre’s limited Off-Broadway production of Love, Love, Love and Daniel Miller on Epix’s espionage thriller, Berlin Station. (Both the play and season one of the series draw to a close on Sunday, Dec. 18.)

Raymond Benson and Peter Janson-Smith in Krakow.
By Raymond Benson
Peter Janson-Smith passed away on Friday, April 15, 2016, at the age of 93. He was a giant in the world of British publishing, a major figure in that arena for nearly seventy years. Serious James Bond fans will know him as Ian Fleming’s literary agent, the man who spearheaded the exploitation of Fleming’s 007 novels around the world from 1956 until Peter’s retirement in 2002.
On a personal level, Peter’s death is a great loss. For me, he was a mentor, a friend, a teacher, and someone I called my “English dad.” He was instrumental in the research for my 1984 book, The James Bond Bedside Companion, and he hired me to write the continuation James Bond novels in the mid-90s. In short, I owe much of my career to him.
Peter was born on September 5, 1922, in Navestock, England, which is...

Review Louisa Mellor 30 Jun 2013 - 22:00
Why isn't anyone in The White Queen having any fun? Here's Louisa's review of a fraught third episode...
This review contains spoilers.
What a joyless lot these Lancastrians and Yorks are. Turgid script problems aside, what The White Queen is really lacking is a character who has any kind of fun. Episode three was wall-to-ceiling moaning, worrying, and flaccid scheming, with some childbirth tragedy thrown in to really take the shine off your Sunday night supper.
Take plotting Warwick, who’s abandoned his early promise as cape-swishing camp villain to have a thankless time of it as the leader of comically short and unsuccessful revolts. Once daily, it seems, Warwick and George ride off together smirking about rebellion, only to return home with their hands in their pockets to tut, kick grass clods, and mutter about stupid Edward and his stupid supporters. “We’ve...

Yep, on the road again. PhilCon lasts for three days, I'll be there tonight and Saturday. Here's my schedule:
Fri 7:00 Pm in Plaza V (Five) (1 hour)
Unstoppable Force Superheroes (455)
[Panelists: Glenn Hauman (mod), Jonathan Maberry, Alexis Gilliland, Andre Lieven]
The Silver Age Superman could juggle planets. Sufficiently enraged, the Hulk has no upper strength limit. How can such invincible characters be given sufficient challenges and obstacles to make satisfying stories without de-powering them? Is this merely an enlarged version of the eternal 'how can there be tension if we know the main character will survive' quandary?
Fri 9:00 Pm in Plaza IV (Four) (1 hour)
Weird Science Comics! (512)
[Panelists: Bill Spangler (mod), Stephanie Burke, Glenn Hauman, J. Andrew World]
The Influence of EC Comics on Science Fiction
Sat 11:00 Am in Plaza II (Two) (1 hour)
Off The Screen: Movie/TV Tie-in Comic (424)
[Panelists: Keith R.A. DeCandido (mod), Glenn Hauman, Bill Spangler]
For years, TV shows and movies have had comic-book adaptations, and sometimes even long-running titles. These days, however, it's been taken to a whole other level, with comics like...
