Criminal Minds showrunner Erica Messer can sum up Season 9 in one word: backstories.
"That's our focus this year," she tells TVGuide.com. "We're telling backstories and origin stories. We want to give everybody some insight into our heroes because we give insight to the unsubs every week. We're going to hit 200 [episodes] and it feels like, 'Let's tell the audience things they never knew before.'"
That involves an old beau for Garcia (Kristen Vangsness), The Reaper (C. Thomas Howell) and Haley (Meredith Monroe) returning (but not from the dead), and filling in the blanks of Jj's (A.J. Cook) year in the State Department during Season 6 — with some help from new Bau section chief Matt Cruz (Esai Morales), with whom she worked there. What's the deal with those two? How does Garcia's ex come back into the picture? Get the scoop on the season below:

Criminal Minds Season 9 begins this Wednesday. And in anticipation of the premiere, TV Fanatic sat down with A.J. Cook to discuss the coming episode, along with what happened with J.J. during those months in Season 6 when she was Awol.
What makes this season different from the rest? What's with the new guy in the Bau? Read on for A.J's take on all that went down and all that's on the way...
-------------------------------------------
TV Fanatic: It's a real pleasure to meet you, particularly for two reasons: you're my favorite actress and you are from my hometown of Oshawa. So now I've got major street cred.
A.J. Cook: Get out! You're from Oshawa? Oh my goodness! I'm giving you a high-five through the phone! That's amazing. Pleasure to meet you.
[There was some banter about our hometown, but then we got down to business.]
TV Fanatic: So, Aj and Jj, what's the story there (with the initials)? Happy coincidence or were the writers...

It won’t take long for Criminal Minds to fill the empty slot of Bau section chief in its upcoming ninth season. Hotch (Thomas Gibson) will be acting section chief for the summer after Strauss (Jayne Atkinson) died in the Season 8 finale. But he won’t have the job long; a permanent replacement has been found and it’s a veteran of crime procedurals. NYPD Blue alum Esai Morales will take the job and he’ll be a great fit. Unless of course it turns out he’s not fit to handle the cases of truly sick-minded criminals. I can’t imagine anyone like that being given the job of heading Bau if they can’t stomach it, but I suppose that could be interesting.
Morales will be portraying Matt Cruz and will be a recurring player through out the season, says TV Guide. He’s a longtime FBI agent...

Esai Morales is set to take charge on Criminal Minds Season 9.
The veteran actor (Caprica, Fairly Legal, Magic City) has been cast as the new Bau section chief, according to TV Guide. His character is named Matt Cruz and he's an ex-fbi agent who worked in the past with Jj. Look for more to come out regarding that relationship as episodes progress.
Morales will debut on Episode 3, with Hotch acting as section chief in the meantime following the death of Strauss on the Criminal Minds Season 8 finale.
Season 9 premieres on September 25 and other notable guest stars already on board include Camryn Manheim and David Anders.
