Jesse Wigutow is taking on the King of Cool.
Wigutow has been hired to pen the screenplay for a biographical treatment of screen legend Steve McQueen for producers Michael Cerenzie and Christine Peters. The writing deal is for seven figures.

Cerenzie-Peters Prods., which has a first-look deal with Paramount, will produce with Arthaus Pictures' Brian Oliver and Chuck Rock, who brought in the project.
Cp Prods. president Graham Kaye is executive producing alongside Brett Granstaff, Keith Watkins and Kenny Johnson.

Whitey Bulger has been around the cinematic block. In 2006, the story of associate John "Red" Shea was picked up for the feature treatment, by Mark Wahlberg, who then went on to star in a different Whitey-influenced film, The Departed. This past December word hit that another associate, John Martorano, was picked for a film. Inevitably, we're led to this moment, and Variety's news that Whitey is finally getting a film to call his very own.
Jim Sheridan, the man behind My Left Foot and In America, will be adapting the Bulger biography Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob with Nye Heron, and then direct it. This book has actually been floating around Hollywood for a while now. It was originally optioned by Miramax for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, then picked up by producer Brian Oliver, who had to...

This week we have the second installment of the weekly Production Update as I bring you all the latest films and casting announcements out of the trade papers as well as a couple of websites around the Net. I am previewing 22 film titles this week and a few of them are already in the database and linked where that is the case. One story, however, I am held from posting until today comes from Variety in which Anne Thompson does a little Twilight franchise rumor passing as she gives the following update on the potential directors for the third film in the franchise, Eclipse: Don't believe everything you hear about Twilight and its sequels. Things are heating up already on the third installment, Eclipse. They haven't even started the second one yet, New Moon. When you've got a robust franchise, filmmakers are eager to get on board. Word is,...

As a filmmaker Jim Sheridan is famous for depicting all different kinds of Irish people, from the struggling family of In America to the wrongfully imprisoned man in In the Name of the Father. Now he's taking a turn for the dark side, with plans to direct a movie about famed Irish-American mobster and FBI informant Whitey Bulger. The script, according to Variety, will be adapted by Sheridan and Nye Heron from the book by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill, with the massive title Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob. Sheridan told Variety, ""This is a story of a corrupt system and about how an angry guy became the second most wanted man after Bin Laden." Sounds awesome-- and timely, given that Michael Mann seems likely to bring mobsters back in style with Public Enemies next summer.

We almost didn’t bring you this story, dear readers, because Variety used the headline ‘Jim Sheridan fingers mob boss’, which frankly put the fear of God into us and prevented us from clicking on the link for a good 90 minutes.*But we’re glad we eventually plucked up the courage, because now we can tell you that, contrary to the hideous mental images that had been racing around our mind unbidden, Sheridan has actually lined up his next film, about the life and mysterious disappearance of Boston mobster and FBI stool pigeon, the unfortunately-named Whitey Bulger.Sheridan has written a script, along with Nye Heron, based on the book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob, by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, which chronicles the rise and rise of Bulger from Mob enforcer to boss of the notorious Winter Hill Gang,...

Jim Sheridan (In America, In the Name of the Fathe) is developing a film based on notorious Boston mobster and FBI informant Whitey Bulger, report the trades. Sheridan will direct a script he and partner Nye Heron are penning based on "Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob," a book written by Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill. Bulger rose to prominence in Boston as a feared enforcer and built the Winter Hill Gang into an enterprise that did everything from selling drugs to procuring guns for the Irish Republican Army. His rise was helped by John Connolly, a childhood pal who became an FBI agent. Bulger disappeared 14 years ago, creating a major law enforcement scandal. Michael Cerenzie, Christine Peters and Brian Oliver (Trapped, Auto Focus) are producing. Cerenzie and Peters are also developing a Steve Mcqueen biopic,...

Jim Sheridan is set to direct a big-screen drama based on Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill's book "Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob."
According to Variety, Sheridan wrote the screenplay with Nye Heron. The film focuses on Whitey Bulger, a Boston enforcer who helped build the Winter Hill Gang, a confederation known for selling drugs and delivering guns to the Irish Republican Army.
"This is a story of a corrupt system and about how an angry guy became the second most wanted man after Bin Laden," Sheridan told Variety.
Sheridan's last directing effort was "Get Rich or Die Tryin'." He is currently working on the post-production for "Brothers," starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire.
As for Heron, he served as second unit director on Sheridan's "The Boxer," "In America" and the two flicks I mentioned just above.

Jim Sheridan seems to be getting ready to get back on track after the stupid 50 cent movie. Relativity Media has picked up the rights to Robert Graves brilliant novel I,Claudius for Jim Sheridan to direct. The film is right now in the scripting stages and he will co write it with Nye Heron.

Jim Sheridan is set to write and direct the big-screen adaptation of Robert Graves' classic novel "I, Claudius" for Relativity Media.
The Hollywood Reporter says Graves' 1934 novel recounts the internecine plots and counterplots surrounding Claudius, the fourth emperor of Rome who ruled from 41-54 A.D.
Sheridan will write the script with Nye Heron, his longtime second unit director. "I, Claudius" made it onto the big screen for the first time in 1937, followed by a BBC miniseries in 1976.
Sheridan, whose directing credits include "My Left Foot" and "In America," is currently working on "Brothers," which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman. The film is a remake of Susanne Bier's acclaimed hit of the same title.

I love when Hollywood remembers to adapt (or re-adapt, in this case) a classic. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Relativity Media has picked up the rights to Robert Graves' brilliant novel I, Claudius for Jim Sheridan to direct. He'll also be writing the adaption, along with his usual collaborator Nye Heron.
I, Claudius purports to be the secret autobiography of Claudius, the fourth emperor of Rome, who used his wits and intelligence to survive his murderous family and become one of Rome's greatest emperors. Fans of HBO's Rome will love it, as it features four strong and manipulative women who manipulate their men in and out of power, peace, and war. Seriously, read it. It's the perfect read for fall.
A new adaptation has been kicking around Hollywood for a year or more -- last year, producer Scott Rudin won the rights, and attached Leonardo DiCaprio and William Monahan to the project,...

Toronto -- Relativity Media has picked up the rights to Robert Graves' classic Roman Empire-set novel "I, Claudius." Jim Sheridan will write the screenplay with longtime collaborator Nye Heron and direct as well.
Graves' 1934 novel recounts the internecine plots and counterplots surrounding Claudius, the fourth emperor of Rome who ruled from 41-54 A.D. The stuttering and handicapped Claudius, born into a murderous, imperial family, used his cunning mind and rivals' misjudgment to not only survive but eventually become one of Rome's greatest emperors.
Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh will produce alongside Sheridan. Relativity's production president Tucker Tooley will serve as an executive producer.
