Denise Nickerson, who played the bratty, bloated Violet Beauregarde in 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and a sweet-natured orphan bedeviled by ghosts and werewolves on the classic ’60s supernatural soap Dark Shadows, died Wednesday night at a hospital near her home in Colorado. In declining health since suffering a stroke last year, Nickerson was removed from life support by her family earlier that day. She was 62.
Nickerson’s son Josh Nickerson posted news of his mother’s death on Facebook after keeping friends and fans apprised of her health issues. Denise Nickerson was a longtime attendee at fan conventions for both Wonka and Dark Shadows.
“She’s gone,” Nickerson’s family posted on Facebook.
Born in New York City in 1957, Nickerson began acting on shows including The Doctors and Flipper before landing her breakthrough role in 1968 as little Amy Jennings on Dan Curtis’ gothic soap opera Dark Shadows. Teamed with young David Henesy,...

Even immortal vampire Barnabas Collins himself would find it a Herculean task to wade through all 1,225 episodes of the original "Dark Shadows" TV series. To put it in perspective, a new complete coffin-shaped DVD box set boasts a runtime of 30,000 hours, and that's without bathroom breaks.
The supernatural soap opera, which ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971, is now getting the full-on feature film treatment. "Dark Shadows" (the movie) has all the big-budget trimmings courtesy of director Tim Burton and his muse Johnny Depp as Barnabas. Before you devour the May 11 release, we've created an easy-breezy introduction to all the things you'll find lurking in the "Shadows."
Welcome to Collinwood
Even though bloodsucker Barnabas is the everlasting icon of the show, he was not introduced until the 211th episode of the weekday soap. Up until that point the central character was a naïve young woman named Victoria Winters, a foundling with...

Fans of the soap opera "Dark Shadows" are no doubt frothing at the mouth for Tim Burton's big screen adaptation, and with good reason; the casting thus far has been outstanding. Speaking of which ... it also continues.
Deadline reports that Burton has set Gulliver McGrath (pictured right; The Loved Ones) to play the role of David Collins (originally portrayed by David Henesy) in the feature film version of Dark Shadows. It was a coveted role for the pint-sized set, and we've heard Burton has his sights on Michael Sheen to play David's father, Roger Collins.
McGrath will join the previously announced Johnny Depp, Jackie Earle Haley, Eva Green, Bella Heathcote, Michelle Pfeiffer, Thomas McDonell, and Helena Bonham Carter.
Seth Grahame-Smith will be writing and Depp will also produce with Graham King's Gk Flms. Depp had obtained feature rights to "Dark Shadows" in 2007 from the estate of Dan Curtis,...

Tim Burton has set Gulliver McGrath to play the role of David Collins in Dark Shadows. It was a coveted role on the pint-sized set, and I've heard Burton has his sights on Michael Sheen to play his father, Roger Collins. The young Australian actor made it to the finals for the lead in Martin Scorsese's Hugo Cabret, then got a small role after the job went to Asa Butterfield. The role of David Collins was originated in the 60s soap by David Henesy, and then Joseph Gordon-Levitt played him in the 1990 series revival. Johnny Deep heads a cast that includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Bella Heathcoate, Jackie Earle Haley and Eva Green, with Helena Bonham Carter also expected to join. Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the script. McGrath is repped by Management 360, Arg in London and Emma Raciti in Australia.
