Lionsgate opens for Solomon Kane, Genius takes Tell Tale

Fango editor Tony Timpone reported in from the American Film Market with word that Lionsgate has apparently picked up U.S. rights to Solomon Kane. The supernatural adventure was written and directed by Deathwatch and Wilderness helmer Michael J. Bassett, based on the character created by Conan scribe Robert E. Howard.

Release plans have yet to be ironed out, though our source suggests the film might get theatrical play before heading to DVD. We’ll keep you posted on confirmed details. Solomon Kane stars James Purefoy (pictured) in the title role of a mercenary who has renounced his violent, bloodthirsty past, then finds his soul tested when he must protect a family from evil forces. The cast also includes The Exorcist’s Max Von Sydow, The Omen’s Pete Postlethwaite, Sleepwalkers’ Alice Krige and An American Haunting’s Rachel Hurd-Wood.

Screen Daily reports that Genius Products (the Weinstein Co.'s home vid label) have picked up the U.S. rights to Tell-Tale and they might bring it to the cinephile market. Michael Cuesta is still a little know filmmaker with L.I.E. (2001) and Twelve and Holding (2005), but "Dexter" fans would most certainly recognize the name.  Written by Dave Callaham, this is a modern-day reimagining of the Edgar Allan Poe classic "The Tell-Tale Heart". Afm '09: Genius Products Acquires Edgar Allen Poe 'Tell-Tale'

In separate deals, Genius Products and Alliance Films have acquired Us and Canadian rights to the thriller Tell-tale starring Josh Lucas and produced by Ridley and Tony Scott. Michael Cuestas updated tale is based on Edgar Allan Poes short story The Tell-Tale Heart and centres on a widower who receives a transplanted heart from a murdered donor. Lena Headey and Brian Cox also star. The film premiered at Tribeca. Yarek Danielak and Matthew Chausse of Mirabelle Pictures International / Arsenal Pictures are selling international rights here at Afm. We think this film is one of the rare gems of the marketplace which has flown under most peoples radars until now, said Danielak, who recently announced the formation of the specialty sales outfit Mirabelle. The Imp Awards got themselves the first look at the official one-sheet for Tribeca selection Tell-Tale (review here), and we have it here for your perusal!

Very loosely based on the Edgar Allan Poe tale The Tell-Tale Heart, this latest semi-adaptation was written by Dave Callaham, directed by Michael Cuesta, and produced by Ridley and Tony Scott.

A Tribeca Film Festival entry, Tell Tale is a film without a home. Even with Ridley and Tony Scott on board as producers, this loose take on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" still awaits a U.S. release even though it has shored up distributors all over the world. Giving it all he's got is the ethos that Rob Hall lives by. Since his days as monster maker for Roger Corman all the way through Buffy and Angel, Hall's creatures were scarier, freakier and more creative than his big-budget competition. Fox to ready a Moses film with ‘Moby Dick’ writing team

Producers Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark will be teaming up for a modernized big-screen version of the story of Moses.

20th Century Fox have landed Moby Dick (the whale tale is still in development) writers Adam Cooper and Bill Collage to pen a script of the biblical tale, which will focus on Moses’ adoption into the Egyptian royal family and how he led the Hebrew people out of Egypt.

The still untitled project is believed to take a page from Zack Snyder’s 300 but don’t expect buckets of blood and S&M warlords…or a naked Lena Headey.

No word if the film will be a direct reimagination of Cecil B. DeMille’s 1956 film The Ten Commandments.

Gerard Butler Is In For 300 Prequel/Sequel?

As far as we know, a second 300 movie is currently being worked on by Frank Miller, the creator and artist of the original 300 graphic novel. After the amazing success of the rated-r film back in 2007, it’s no wonder they want to pump out another one. Miller is interested, producer Marc Canton is interested and most importantly, Director Zack Snyder is interested… But only if Miller makes a graphic novel for it first.

The major question surrounding the project however, is when it would take place and who would it be about. Well, Gerard Butler is certainly interested in returning if it happens…

As a science fiction nerd, I was onboard Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles at the word “Terminator”.  The show focuses on the bond between Sarah and her son John as they work together with the first cute Terminator, Cameron, to stave off Armageddon.  Were they successful?  Was it entertaining?  More after the jump.

Gerard Butler In For '300' Sequel, But Unsure 'How Real It Is'

A sequel to “300” is ludicrous, unwarranted, impossible—and perhaps somewhat brilliant. Which is why everyone from Frank Miller to Zack Snyder toMark Canton avoid killing the proposed sequel, but nonetheless insist that if Miller can make it work, they’re in. Now, count in another co-collaborator: King Leonidas.

“I had an incredible time doing the first one, and I think that if the first one was a stand-alone, as a one-off, there’s no bad thing in that,” explained Gerard Butler when we caught up with him recently, saying he’d be willing to bring his character back to life—even if it meant re-animating arguably the most dead person in movie history (remember all those spears?). “But, you know, let’s see what it might bring forward with a second one.”

Exclusive: Get 'Laid' Again!

In his short but sweet reign of terror in the impressive Anchor Bay direct to DVD horror film Laid To Rest, serial killer Chrome Skull rampages through a small town wiping out everyone in his path. While he never catches the elusive, nameless girl he's pursuing, he does something even Terminator and The Persians couldn't do: He terminates 300's Lena Headey!

By the ending, it appeared that ol' Chrome Skull was deader than Disco--broken neck, crushed head, it looked like he slipped off this mortal coil and was wiped out. Of course, Jason, Freddy and Godzilla were all wiped out, too.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Complete Second Season’

Chicago – The excellent Blu-Ray release for the second season of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” highlights what worked about this series that was cancelled far too soon. There were storytelling flaws and a male lead that never quite worked, but “Scc” delivered theatrical caliber sci-fi entertainment every week and it looks absolutely amazing in HD. It’s a show that will be missed.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

When it came time to announce the fall schedules, most of us knew that Fox could only afford to renew one, relatively low-rated, sci-fi show - “Dollhouse” or “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”. Most assumed it would be the latter but, as we all know by now, Eliza Dushku lived to fight another day, Lena Headey was stopped in her tracks, and Summer Glau actually jumped from the cancelled show to the one miraculously saved.

At first I was pretty excited to watch the new Fox television series based on the Terminator films, which were originally conceived by James Cameron. Sadly, after the first few episodes, I wasn’t completely hooked and my enthusiasm waned a bit. I did, however, continue to watch the show through the entire first season. Then, the second season began and it seemed the show had finally found its voice and started to really come together.

The show continued for a second season and then, as we know, was canceled by Fox — which renewed the equally low rated Dollhouse instead. But even with the cancellation of the show, it may live on as a DVD movie which will, perhaps, answer some questions poised by the finale of the series. Fortunately, while you wait for the DVD movie to happen, or not happen, you can watch the entire second season on DVD or Blu-ray, »
