Back again for another highly opinionated -- some might even say downright cranky -- look at the week in fantasy. You've been warned! This Is Halloween, This Is Halloween! If it wasn't clear from all our Halloween coverage this week, I'm a real fan of the holiday. And if it wasn't clear from my article on how to make the "perfect" haunted house, I'm a real fan of haunted houses too. In fact, I'm reminded of the very confounding dilemma I had every year as a kid on Halloween: do I want to create and control an elaborate Halloween display for the trick-or-treaters who come to my house, or do I want to go out trick-or-treating myself? Experience the joy and satisfaction of creativity and self-expression -- or eat candy? It's a dilemma I still find myself wrestling with today as editor of TheTorchOnline.com: Do I want to interview »

It's a busy day in the MTV Newsroom today. At the moment, Tim Kash is sitting down for a chat with Alicia Keys (she says her new album The Element of Freedom will be a big, synthesizer-heavy departure from her past work). But there's another interview happening just around the corner: "Gossip Girl" and "Mercy" star Michelle Trachtenberg is here to talk about straddling two hit TV shows.
Trachtenberg is probably best known for playing Dawn on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," a show created and produced by Joss Whedon. In the past few months, it seems as though we've had a regular rotation of alums from Whedon shows stop by to hang out and chat about their new projects. They are all members of a tightly-wound, closely-followed community known as the "Whedonverse," which represents the various projects that Whedon has worked on in his two-decade career.

Arthurian adventure series Merlin returns to BBC1 this weekend with a host of big-name guest stars joining the regular cast for its 13-week run.
Having enchanted audiences of more than 6.3 million in its inaugural series, the show promises more magic, mystery, adventure and romance for Season 2 as the young wizard struggles to keep his powers hidden in the increasingly perilous world of Camelot.
Mackenzie Crook (Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Office, Skins, Demons) is to guest-star in the opening episode as the creepy Cedric (pictured right), who is determined to muscle in on Merlin's position as Arthur's right-hand-man - much to the sorcerer's frustration.
Sarah Parish (Mistresses, Cutting It) will play a horrible troll masquerading as the beautiful Lady Catrina; Adrian Lester (Hustle, Bonekickers) is the devious Myror; Charles Dance (Bleak House, Gosford Park) will guest-star as Aredian, the sinister Witchfinder; and Santiago Cabrera (Heroes) returns as the dashing Lancelot. »

Though the show attracted a devoted audience on NBC, it looks highly unlikely that NBC will be bringing Merlin back for a second season. Its ratings were anything but magical for the peacock network.
Fortunately for UK viewers, the show has been a success for the BBC. The first season of Merlin began airing in September of 2008 over there and ran through December. Soonafter, the network announced that a second season had been ordered.
Colin Morgan returns as the young sorcerer who must fulfill his destiny and protect Prince Arthur (Bradley James). Other regular castmembers include Anthony Head, Katie McGrath, Angel Coulby, and Richard Wilson.
The second season of Merlin is set to debut on Saturday, September 19th. In the premiere episode, an ancient and supposedly cursed tomb is discovered that's filled with treasure. Meanwhile, a new servant named »

Great movies sometimes do not hit it off with the audience upon first viewing. Not even the sublime Citizen Kane found much appreciation on its release in 1941, taking over twenty years and critical re-discovery in order for everybody to agree it was a pretty special movie.
Cult films are different (and this is not a list of cult movies) – those do tend to find an audience (usually people who become hardcore fans) allowing the film to become celebrated in alternative ways – as opposed to garnering a multitude of awards.
This is a list drawn up of films I consider under-rated; overlooked; not thought about; dismissed, and so forth. I am not suggesting they should be regaled as masterpieces anointed and placed in a cinematic pantheon of greatness.
Compiling lists is very tough and as this is limited to a mere ten films, some wonderful films did not make final cut. »

For the second class in our EW University course on TV Auteurs, Prof. Adam B. Vary offers this overview of the TV career of Joss Whedon, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dollhouse. Also, check out this photo gallery of our favorite shows by four legendary showrunners. What Stephen Bochco (Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue), Norman Lear (All in the Family, The Jeffersons), and Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone) were in the 20th century television, Joss Whedon has become today: Nothing less than a television brand. His name alongside the "Created by" credit during the opening titles guarantees you are about to watch a show that swings for the fences; a show as keenly attuned to its female characters as its male ones; a show that tackles Big Ideas and Big Themes without skimping on Great Entertainment; a show that is unafraid to Go There, from allowing the »

This story may contain spoilers. We were treated to two episodes of "Merlin" on Sunday, one about the assassination of Uther (Anthony Stewart Head), and one about the death of Arthur (Bradley James). Apparently, someone wants those pesky royals dead! In .To Kill The King,. Uther orders the death of Guinevere's (Angel Coulby) father for aiding a known sorcerer. In a show that doesn.t usually make any bold moves, the guards actually do kill him. This reminds Morgana (Katie McGrath) of the death of her own father, whom she still blames Uther for, and she plots to have Uther killed by the sorcerer. At the last moment she changes her mind when Uther admits to feeling remorse for the death of her dad. For once Merlin wasn.t the one to save the day; it was Morgana. This was a good twist ... »

Bradley James plays Prince Arthur in the NBC show Merlin. Yes, I said "Prince". In this version, Arthur's father Uther (Anthony Head) is still alive. This British import is a very different take on the Arthur myth, with Merlin (Colin Morgan) and Arthur as young contemporaries, Guinevere (Angel Coulby) as a servant girl, and magic having been banned from Camelot. We're only part way into the first season, but in England, the show has been renewed for a second season. As a huge fan of the myth in all it's forms, I watch it weekly. I was pleased to be able to chat with James about his character, the changes in the story, and working with the amazing Head. (Obviously I'm a Buffy fan as well.) [Note: Across the pond, they refer to a season... »

I confess I'm still getting used to this whole "hoyay" thing. Gay subtext, I understand. But projected gay subtext where it can all be in the mind of the viewer? That's ridiculously open-ended, isn't it?
Still, even on the "wishful thinking" front, there wasn't much hoyay between Merlin and Arthur in "Excalibur," last night's episode of Merlin (although Merlin did admit, "You could say there's a bond between us").
Still, there were some serious Brokeback-Camelot sparks flying between Arthur and King Uther, who said to him, "You mean more to me than anything I know — more than my own kingdom, and certainly my own life."
Granted, the characters are father and son, which is admittedly very creepy, but if fans of Supernatural can overlook the fact that they're supposed to be brothers, I can overlook that.
And did you catch the way the Black Knight was eyeing Arthur?
Okay, that last comment was (1) truly icky, »

If you're a Merlin fan then you've got to be excited about the upcoming episode entitled "Excalibur", which airs on 8/2 at 8/7c. Well today I have an extended trailer available for you as well as an episode summary. I don't really consider this info incredibly spoilery, but if you do, please read on (and watch) with caution. And if you've even been following Merlin a little, trust me when I tell you that this is the one episode that you want to make sure you don't miss.
A Mysterious Black Knight Arrives In Camelot To Reveal Deep, Dark Secrets From The Past—At Arthur’s (Bradley James) coming of age ceremony, the celebrations are interrupted when a mysterious Black Knight (Rick English) crashes the ceremony and challenges the knights of Camelot to single combat. One-by-one, each knight that he challenges dies in the fight. When one knight successfully strikes the Black Knight, »

Another Sunday night, another two episodes of Merlin (although next week, the show – if it survives, which is questionable given its disastrous ratings – is back to a single episode per night).
Okay, all you U.K. Merlin viewers who have already seen all thirteen episodes and have been saying how terrific it is?
You win. You’re right. This is a great show. Last night’s episodes, “The Mark of Nimueh” and “The Poisoned Chalice,” were the one-two punch that proved to me that this is potentially a great series.
In the first episode, the evil sorceress Nimueh creates a magical plague in the kingdom of Camelot. The evil tyrant Uther (Anthony Stewart Head, who played Giles on Buffy) and Merlin’s kind mentor Gaius, who both agree that magic is bad, have different strategies for what must be done:
Uther says kill the witch who cast the spell, and »

NBC debuted their new fantasy-adventure series, Merlin, last night. Did many people tune in to watch this new take on an old tale? Will it be allowed to run its course or has the magic tale failed to excite viewers?
Merlin stars Colin Morgan as a young sorcerer who arrives in Camelot, a city where magic has been outlawed by King Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head). While there, Merlin learns that he has an important part to play in the future of Camelot and residents like Prince Arthur (Bradley James), maid Guinevere (Angel Coulby), and seer Morgana (Katie McGrath). Others in the cast include Bionic Woman's Michelle Ryan, Richard Wilson, and John Hurt as the voice of The Great Dragon.
Though many British shows have been remade for American audiences over the years, Merlin supposedly marks the first time a UK drama has aired on a major Us network in over 30 years. »

While American networks often try to remake hit British television programs, NBC has picked up a new BBC series which will go untouched. For the first time in 30 years, an American network will air a British drama when "Merlin" premieres Sunday at 8pm on NBC.
In the fantasy series, "Merlin" takes place before the golden age of Camelot and follows the early years of the mythical wizard. Anthony Head ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") stars as a king who has outlawed magic, while John Hurt is the voice of the Great Dragon. The series, like the CW series "Smallville," follows a young Prince Arthur and his mentor Merlin.
The first season of "Merlin" consists of thirteen episodes, which first began airing in the UK in 2008. A second season is already filming.
"It's probably quite difficult to recast this one and remake it in an American way," said star Bradley James, who plays Prince Arthur, »

After news that a remake of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the works without creator Joss Whedon on board, several old cast and crew members have chimed in with their thoughts on the project. British actor Anthony Stewart Head, who played watcher Giles in all seven seasons of the show, recently expressed his opinion on the subject.
"I wouldn't want to see it, no. The bottom line is if a movie was ever to be made, it should be made with Joss Whedon, whether it's a retrospective or not. The Kuzuis have the rights to because they have the rights to the original movie, but it should be interesting to see. It may be a bit like watching a car wreck." These sentiments are no doubt echoing through the Whedon fan-verse, with many die-hard Scoobies refusing to believe in such a thing. With the current popularity of vampires, it's »

Arthur and Merlin. Camelot. The sword in the stone. Lancelot. There are many things that spring to mind when recalling the Arthurian myths but NBC's new acquired series Merlin, which aired last year on BBC One in the UK, throws caution to the wind by reinventing those stories for a new generation. I caught up with series stars Colin Morgan, who plays a young Merlin just arriving in Camelot who is tasked with serving the egocentric Arthur, and Anthony Head on a recent press call to see what they thought of Merlin's legacy, shooting in France, and green-screen filming. "One of the things that really works about [Merlin] is the variety that the show presents because when you think Arthurian legend and you think about Merlin and Arthur, you think of about that period in history," said Morgan. "And what's great is an idea started with that and twisted it »

Aging is one of the most effective ways to become invisible in our world. We celebrate youth and fitness, and as wrong as it may be, tend to judge those of a certain age as being past any notice and usefulness, much less anything skillful or clever. The Invisibles is a perfect title for a story about two aging master criminals who refuse to disappear without a fight. This is not to say that for the past fifteen years or so Maurice Riley (Anthony Head) and Sid Woolsey (Warren Clarke) have been on anyone.s radar.
