Proyas Doing "Tripods" Film Trilogy

18 October 2009 9:36 AM, PDT | www.ohmygore.com/ | See recent OhMyGore news »

Stuart Hazeldine ("Exam") has apparently completed the screenplay for a film adaptation of John Christopher's classic British sci-fi novel trilogy "The Tripods" and indicates Alex Proyas ("Knowing", "Dark City") is aiming to produce and potentially direct according to Digital Spy. The story follows three teens fleeing from alien conquerors dwelling in three-legged machines who enslaved humans with mind-control devices implanted in the brain. A previous BBC TV adaptation in the 1980's gained a cult following but was cancelled after its second season, failing to bring the last of the books to the screen. Hazeldine indicates his script is based on the first book alone and should the film be a success, the plan is to adapt the remaining two.... »

Alex Proyas Directing 'The Tripods' Trilogy Next?

13 October 2009 5:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Writer/director Stuart Hazeldine chatted up Digital Spy about what may end up being director Alex Proyas' (Knowing) next project -- a three-film adaptation of "The Tripods", a series of British young adult novels. Hazeldine confirms that he and Proyas have finished the screenplay for the first film in the trilogy, The White Mountain, but it's the prospect of adapting the second and third parts that get him really excited.

"They only filmed the first book for the BBC, so I was kind of bummed out that they didn't do books two and three, so this time it would be nice to go back and do that as well," Hazeldine says. The BBC broadcast "The Tripods" as a television series in 1984, faithfully adapting the first and second books, but never getting around to a third season, which would've wrapped up the story. My guess here is »

Any fans of Will, Henry and Beanpole out there? Fear not, The Tripods young heroes are still heading to The White Mountain under the guidance of Alex Proyas. Only thing stopping them right now is (what else) money. The folks from Digital Spy caught up with screenwriter Stuart Hazeldine during a press tour for his cool-sounding film Exam, and got a video interview where he claims to have completed the screenplay for The Tripods movie written with Proyas himself who is currently trying to get... »

Stuart Hazeldine talks Tripods in video interview

12 October 2009 3:59 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

While being interviewed by digitalspy on a press junket for his directorial debut, Exam (which I'm desperate to see), screenwriter Stuart Hazeldine talked briefly about his work writing the in-development adaptation of John Christopher's post-apocalyptic, alien invasion kids series, Tripods, with Alex Proyas.

While the clip is short, it reveals a few interesting bits of positive info regarding the project that's still technically "in development." First off, Hazeldine confirms the screenplay by he an Proyas is done and that there is proper budget negotiations going on with some studio. He also points to Blomkamp's District 9 as a example of what he thinks they can potentially do on a tight budget with the action heavy scifi project. And, of course, he wants the franchise to be a trilogy (but then again, who doesn't have delusions of a trilogy these days?).

It's not much, but it's something folks. With any »

Hackers unleash hell in new indie horror BEACON77

20 July 2009 10:13 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

The first thing that attracted me to Brad Watson's feature debut, Beacon77, was the intriguing poster which hints at something intense and cosmic going down in a London housing block. Then I noticed that the credits list Tim Wooster as the project's cinematographer.

Dp's are rarely household names so you may have never heard of Wooster, but he's long been one of the best eyes in the business having worked second unit on Babylon A.D., Wanted and most recently two films I'm highly anticipating, Michael Basset's Solomon Kane and Stuart Hazeldine's dystopian thriller Exam.

Synopsis:

Two young women arrive at a curious penthouse apartment, led by one’s crush on her tutor. However, her love interest doesn’t live alone. He’s part of a trio of computer hackers about to embark on the ultimate job on the world’s most mysterious mainframe. Whilst doing so, they unlock more »

Edinburgh 2009: The Tomato Report . Exam Passes

19 June 2009 9:29 PM, PDT | Rotten Tomatoes | See recent Rotten Tomatoes news »

The fun continued in Edinburgh as the Edinburgh International Film Festival entered its third day in the Scottish town. Amongst the films on offer were The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow's Iraq war story with Jeremy Renner, and Wasted, a homegrown Scottish film that's attracting much buzz. But perhaps the most exciting film screening yesterday had to wait for the Night Moves slot, at 10Pm, to get its world premiere. Stuart Hazeldine's Exam is the real job interview from hell -- a group of highly driven career types enter a small room with nothing but a guard at the door and... »

First look: Tripods writer's claustrophobic British thriller Exam

13 May 2009 8:06 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

There are two films of the "strangers who find themselves in trouble in a room" genre that I'm really looking forward to seeing in 2009. The first is Jonathan Liebesman's The Killing Room which has already premiered at SXSW but which we've seen nothing from (except for a couple of stills). The second is a highly original British thriller, Exam, which has one of the most intriguing plots I've read in a while.

Synopsis:

Eight talented candidates have reached the final stage of selection to join the ranks of a mysterious and powerful corporation. Entering a windowless room, an Invigilator gives them eighty minutes to answer one simple question. He outlines three rules they must obey or be disqualified: don't talk to him or the armed guard by the door, don't spoil their papers and don't leave the room. He starts the clock and leaves.

The candidates turn over their question papers, »

The Weekly Wrap-Up: March 22-28, 2009

28 March 2009 1:51 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Looking over the news from the week of March 22-28, 2009, quite frankly, not much of it sparked a lot of enthusiasm. But there were a few items that made me go hmmmm, especially compared to the rest. First up is a low, but in an effort to keep things moving in a productive direction, the rest of the list are (cross your fingers) highs.

A chill came to my heart when I saw the chat with screenwriters Stiles White and Juliet Snowden. These people were at least partially responsible for the train wreck known as Knowing (they share credit with Ryne Douglas Pearson and Stuart Hazeldine), and I cannot imagine entrusting such classics as Poltergeist and The Birds to them. On the other hand, if by chance they were involved with scripting the few enjoyable parts of Knowing (i.e., before all parties involved lost control of themselves), then maybe »

Cinematographer: Simon Duggan

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Chandler Canterbury, Rose Byrne, D.G. Maloney

Studio/Run Time: Summit, 122 mins.

Another day, another apocalypse

Toward the end of Knowing, the hyper new sci-fi parable, wide-eyed star Nic Cage wails, “How am I supposed to stop the end of the world?” At this point, the movie has hurtled through so many breathless sequences of disaster violence that the plot has virtually shut down, but still, it’s a fair question. And in one of the only moments of real verve, the movie comes up with an unlikely answer: Sorry, Nic, but you don’t. »

Knowing Review

Knowing Directed by: Alex Proyas Written by: Ryne Pearson, Juliet Snowden, Stiles White, Stuart Hazeldine, Alex Proyas Starring: Nicolas Cage, Chandler Canterbury, Rose Byrne, Lara Robinson, Nadia Townsend Back in the late '90s, Alex Proyas was a director that had earned himself a lot of admirers. He had two dark and visually stunning cult hits under his belt with The Crow and Dark City (the latter of which Roger Ebert continues to sing the praises of to this day), before he threw everyone a curve ball and he went in a completely different direction with the rock n roll coming of age movie Garage Days. He followed that with the disappointing Will Smith action sci-fi blockbuster I, Robot. Suddenly no one knew what to think of the guy anymore. Five years later, Proyas has returned to his sci-fi/horror roots with a movie called Knowing, but with the plot »

Knowing the Difference

18 March 2009 7:38 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Alex Proyas is a hard director to pin down. While he almost always deals with some sort of dark material, he takes genre conventions, mixes them up and often defies expectations. At least two of his films, The Crow and Dark City, are regarded as modern cult classics, with the latter blessed by a passionate Roger Ebert going to bat for it.

Although notoriously plagued by studio interference and power struggles on his most recent feature I, Robot, he has persevered and is ready to release a new vision onto screens—one that will surprise many viewers, both the eagerly anticipating and the cautiously approaching. That vision is contained in Knowing, the science-fiction thriller that Summit Entertainment releases this Friday.

Knowing revolves around MIT professor John Koestler (Nicolas Cage), whose son Caleb’s elementary school is celebrating its 50th anniversary. When the school first opened, its students placed drawings of »

"Knowing" review - Nicolas Cage strives to protect the world in 'Knowing,' but fails to save the movie

17 March 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

"Knowing" reviewby Steve Ramos, Writer To the credit of filmmaker Alex Proyas and his five writers on the fantasy thriller "Knowing" it's difficult to successfully wrap a story about the cataclysmic end of the world. No matter what happens, someone will be disappointed.Based on a story by prolific author Ryne Douglas Pearson and adapted by Pearson, Proyas and three other screenwriters, "Knowing" has its share of clever mystery and creepy moments of suspense. But its unsatisfying ending, an attempt to neatly tie all loose ends via an inspirational bow, takes away much of its spooky fun. A Boston-area elementary school class draws pictures imagining their world 50 years into the future. Their work is placed in a time capsule in celebration of the 1959 dedication of their new school building. But one child, a solemn outcast named Lucinda (Lara Robinson in the first of her two roles in the film) scribbles »

Excl: Alex Proyas' Dracula Year Zero Update

ComingSoon.net/ShockTillYouDrop.com just got off the phone with filmmaker Alex Proyas ( The Crow , Dark City ) after talking briefly about his upcoming sci-fi thriller Knowing , starring Nicolas Cage. Proyas has been hard at work in the post-production of the film, but we wondered if there'd been any progress on the two other films he'd been developing, The Tripods , based on the series by John Christopher, and Dracula Year Zero , a proposed origin story for Bram Stoker's legendary vampire. Both are still in active development so either could be Proyas' next project. "I'm working on a bunch of different things and the two projects I'm excited about are an adaptation of John Christopher's The Tripod stories that I've co-written with Stuart Hazeldine, who is one of our... »
