I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Leo McCarey’s beloved 1939 romance “Love Affair” starring Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer as star-crossed lovers who meet cute on a luxury liner. Since they are both attached to others — Dunne is actually a “kept” woman — they agree to meet six months after they land in New York at the Empire State Building. For years, “Love Affair” was near impossible to see after the rights of the Rko production had been sold to 20th Century Fox for Carey’s scene-by-scene 1957 remake “An Affair to Remember” with Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant.
But in 1977, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s film department lead by the late great Ron Haver presented a months’ long Rko festival featuring every film from the studio that still existed including “Love Affair,” which had earned six Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best...

All hail the memory of Stanley Donen. We also appreciate the razor-sharp satire of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, whose genius Donen preserved in this hilarious Faustian comedy. Poor pitiful Stanley Moon bargains with the Devil for seven chances to win the woman of his dreams, which naturally turns out to be a big mistake. Who could make a wise decision with Raquel Welch’s ‘Lillian Lust’ climbing into their bed?

You ever look at the back of those discs you used to buy and wonder who'd waste their time on those special features? Well, I'm that guy, that person who delves whole hog into the making ofs, the behind-the-scenes shots, and, above all, the director's commentaries. The first one ever is on Criterion's LaserDisc of King Kong and it's pretty adorable [a brief excerpt here]. The first few minutes are spent explaining this seemingly mystical thing - an additional audio track on a film! - with the commenter in question (in this case the film historian Ronald Haver) patiently explaining the process of his "lecture track". In the heyday of LaserDiscs and early days of DVD we were getting some sublime tracks - think...

Joan Fontaine today: One of the best actresses of the studio era has her ‘Summer Under the Stars’ day Joan Fontaine, one of the few surviving stars of the 1930s, is Turner Classic Movies’ "Summer Under the Stars" star today, Tuesday, August 6, 2013. I’m posting this a little late in the game: TCM has already shown six Joan Fontaine movies, including the first-rate medieval adventure Ivanhoe and the curious marital drama The Bigamist, directed by and co-starring Ida Lupino, and written by Collier Young — husband of both Fontaine and Lupino (at different times). Anyhow, TCM has quite a few more Joan Fontaine movies in store. (Photo: Joan Fontaine publicity shot ca. 1950.) (TCM schedule: Joan Fontaine movies.) As far as I’m concerned, Joan Fontaine was one of the best actresses of the studio era. She didn’t star in nearly as many movies as sister Olivia de Havilland, perhaps because...

Los Angeles, the world capital of film and its Country Museum of Art are in effect cutting the salary and job of sixteen year veteran Ian Birnie, the successor to Ron Haver who founded the film program 40 years ago. The programming budget of $60,000 a year plus the 2 salaries of the programmer made only $120,000 a year and therefore ran at a deficit. There is some dispute about the actual amount which the museum claims to be $1 million over the past 10 years. As a non profit arts program, where, whenever I attend, the auditorium is full, this closure hardly seems fair to Los Angeles and its film culture..Sydney.
From IndieWire: The Los Angeles Times reported last night that the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will be pulling the plug on its renowned weekend film program, which has been running for four decades. The program, which has screened retrospectives on everyone...
