With all the excitement over directors, writers, and actors, we sometimes forget that film composers even exist (unless they’re John Williams). It’s a shame too, because composers are an important factor in any film as their soundtracks can make or break a movie. A single scene suddenly changes meaning because of a well-placed aural cue, a sweeping vista or emotional dialogue brings tears to the eyes because of the music that accompanies it. So in talking about composers, we are talking about one of the most important factors that goes into making a movie great.

Is Alexandre Desplat the hardest-working man in Hollywood? If they were going to give an Oscar for that this weekend, he'd certainly be a contender, though as it is he's nominated instead in the real category of Best Score, for “Philomena.” In the last three years alone he has worked on that film, “The Monuments Men” (where he also had a small role), “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Rise of the Guardians,” “Rust and Bone,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” “Argo,” “The Ides of March,” “Carnage,” “The King's Speech,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” and more. And he shows no sign of slowing down, with scores in the pipeline for “Godzilla," Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" and now also for “D,” Roman Polanski's new project. Desplat is Polanski's go-to music guy at present, having done “Carnage,” “The Ghost Writer” and even the documentary "Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir.

Despite being the world's favorite sport, and gaining increasing traction in the U.S., the number of great films about soccer (or football, as those of us in the rest of the world accurately call it), can be counted on the fingers of no hands. From John Huston's "Escape To Victory" to the would-be-blockbuster trilogy "Goal," virtually every attempt to capture the beautiful game on screen has stumbled badly, even as seemingly less cinematic sports like baseball and golf end up driving a string of classics.
But it sounds like one of Hollywood's biggest A-list directors is about to try and crack the code, albeit in documentary form, as 24 Frames report that Paul Greengrass, the British helmer behind "The Bourne Supremacy" and "The Bourne Ultimatum," is planning to make a film on one of the world's most successful clubs, F.C. Barcelona. Entitled "Barca," the film will look at the Spanish club,...

Zachary Quinto tweeted out the picture you see to the right noting principal photography on Star Trek 2 has wrapped. If you check out his Twitter pics here you'll see more pics, many of him, Simon Pegg, Benedict Cumberbatch and Chris Pine hanging out in various locations and occasionally a few fans. Star Trek 2 hits theaters on May 17, 2013. [source] Roman Polanski will direct D as his next project. Written by Robert Harris, the film centers on Captain Alfred Dreyfus, one of the few Jewish officers on the General Staff of the French Army, who in December 1894 was subjected to a secret court martial for passing secrets to the Germans. Found guilty, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to Devil's Island. The independently financed film will begin casting shortly and currently plans to be in production in Paris by the end of this year. Lionsgate/Summit International will represent the film's international sales.

Oscar nomination ballots are due back at AMPAS headquarters today, so I thought I wouldn’t wait any longer than necessary to share with you what I believe the resulting field will look like when it is revealed early on the morning of Tuesday, January 25. I urge you to keep in mind that what follows is not what I feel should happen — that can be gleaned from reading my year-end top 10 list — but rather what I think will happen, based on months of screenings (I’ve seen all of the likely nominees at least once), observations (of critics, guilds, and other awards-bestowers), and conversations (with pundits and voters). I have historically done quite well when it comes to forecasting the nods — for instance, I projected best picture nominations for “The Reader” (2008) and for “The Blind Side” (2009) when virtually no one else did — but only time will tell as far as this year is concerned.

It's been a familiar question for more than a year at the Santa Barbara courthouse where judges, prosecutors and even Randy and Evi Quaid's own attorney have worked overtime to try to get the couple to appear for two felony court cases.Last year, the search centered on Texas, but in recent weeks the focus on the Quaids' whereabouts has shifted to Canada, where they are seeking asylum from a mysterious syndicate they've dubbed "Hollywood star-whackers."In the latest case, Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Donna Geck was the one asking about the actor and his wife's whereabouts Tuesday. They had been scheduled to appear for an arraignment on felony vandalism charges, but for the third time in two weeks, failed to appear. The result was an arrest warrant issued for Evi Quaid, who also forfeited $500,000 bail. The judge agreed to...

Tasteless plastic toy comedy offers an antidote to the grim tone struck by other paranoid alternate histories
I salute the makers of Jackboots On Whitehall for finding a fresh approach to the surprisingly rich genre of movies that ask that big and troubling question: Dude, What If Hitler Had Won? (or Invaded?) In their account, which marries the action-puppet idiocy of Team America: World Police to the demented historical revisionism of Inglourious Basterds, Hitler will invade, Panzers will thunder along the Strand, and Churchill himself will be seen brandishing a machine gun on the steps of No 10, ventilating wave upon wave of the Krautonic hordes.
It's about time someone took the piss out of all this again, because most of the work in this field has had a very grim tone over the years. And it's been years. I thought that downbeat fictional speculations on a Nazified Britain or America...

The Ghost Writer Directed by: Roman Polanski Written by: Robert Harris (novel), Roman Polanski (screenplay) Starring: Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, Olivia Williams, Tom Wilkinson, James Belushi, Jon Bernthal It is rare for a major motion picture to be released while the director remains in custody; this custody may have added to the political strife that is featured in The Ghost Writer. Based on the original novel, The Ghost by Robert Harris, this 2010 political thriller is a first for the troubled director Roman Polanski, yet features many of the traditional signatures that have made him a major figure in cinema for six decades. An unnamed protagonist (who will be referred to as Ghost) (Ewan McGregor) is hired to pick up where the previous ghost writer left of on former British Prime Minister Adam Lang's (Pierce Brosnan) memoirs. The previous ghost writer was found dead and washed ashore. Ghost...

The final act has arrived for Roman Polanski – still under house arrest. After precocity, ignominy and exile, has he got one more flourish of brilliance left in him?
Imagine this scenario. A man is 76 and perhaps no longer in the best of health – at 76, things in even a ruthless system are likely to be faltering; and in this case, the body is beset by uncommon anxieties or insecurities. In Paris, where he lives, or lived, he had a wife and two children. We don't need to romanticise those ties, but don't discount them either. Because the wife and the children want him home, and they seize upon every hopeful possibility the lawyers can find.
You see, he is in a rare position for a 76-year-old in that he may be as insecure as he has ever been in his life – yet he has always told himself that insecurity is his great thing,...

Olivia Williams got her big break as Bruce Willis's wife in The Sixth Sense. Now, in Roman Polanski's The Ghost, she steals the show as the bruised, though vulnerable wife of a disgraced former prime minister holed up with his ghost-writer in Martha's Vineyard, writes Euan Ferguson
Nice, wouldn't it be, to have your life begin at 41? You'd have gone through the whole cliched begins-at-40 thing, wondering when, exactly, it was going to start, justifiably hating cliches, and then, suddenly, in it kicks at 41. Hurrah. Olivia Williams, smart and vaguely leftie child of Camden barristers, wasn't in any hurry: she just wanted to be a terribly good actress. She managed that, although too few of us noticed, and quietly managed along the way to marry American actor/playwright Rhashan Stone, have a couple of happy daughters, cherry-pick her parts… and now, suddenly, at that glorious age, will find herself this year feted,...

Roman Polanski found the time to direct The Ghost Writer, based off the novel written by Robert Harris. Polanski and Harris then tweaked the novel into a screenplay which turned into a 128 minute flick. As a movie, it works fairly well. Having never read the book, this critic can't say if that is a good thing or not. As a book, one may not want to finish reading the pages. Luckily, one won't mind finishing the movie just to see how things play out in this tale of mystery. Thank the cast for that.
Ewan McGregor plays a ghost writer (he has no name) hired to finish an autobiography of Britain's former Prime Minister Adam Lang (Pierce Bronson). The key word is finish, for the last ghost writer suddenly washed-up on a shore in nearby New England. As McGregor's character goes through the motions of getting...

Roman Polanski returns to the world of political intrigue.
Ewan McGregor in "The Ghost Writer"

Roman Polanski's "The Ghost Writer" is a movie out of place and out of time. The place is supposed to be Martha's Vineyard, the celebrity isle off the coast of Massachusetts, where most of the story is set. However, given Polanski's well-known travel restrictions (which have lately become even more acute — he had to finish tinkering with this film from his house-arrest château in Switzerland), he was compelled to shoot the Vineyard exteriors on the German North Sea island of Sylt. One grassy dune or gray, wave-lapped beach is pretty much like any other, probably, but there's a heavy glumness to these scenes that feels off.
And while the story is technically topical — former British prime minister (think Tony Blair) under attack for his complicity in promoting the Middle East agenda...

Fans of Ewan McGregor, Kristen Stewart and James Van Der Beek (!) will be seeing double this spring, as arthouses and multiplexes host an array of indie films ranging from the travails of septuagenarian New Yorkers looking for love ("The Last New Yorker") to 13-year-old assassins on the hunt for their first kill ("Kick-Ass"). If real life is more your speed, there are new documentaries about reviving animation strips (the Disney doc "Waking Sleeping Beauty") and stripping down (the burlesque history "Behind the Burly Q"), while foreign wonders like the French crime epics "A Prophet" and "Mesrine" mix with Korean treasures "Mother" and "The Good, The Bad and The Weird."

Georgia
Opens: 2010
Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech
Director: Renny Harlin
Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.
Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.
Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three...

Kim Cattrall will seduce the British Prime Minister in new movie "The Ghost." The 52-year-old actress will play Amelia, the sexy secretary of fictional U.K. leader Adam Lang, who is based on former real Pm Tony Blair, portrayed by Pierce Brosnan.
Kim will appear alongside 37-year-old Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, who plays the writer brought in to ghost Lang's memoirs, and 40-year-old British actress Olivia Williams, who plays Lang's manipulative wife Ruth.
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski will direct the movie, which is based on Robert Harris' bestselling political thriller of the same name about the ex-occupants of No. 10 Downing Street.

Katie Price has hit back at criticism of her nomination for a children's book award. The glamour model sparked outrage when she was shortlisted for a Wh Smith's Children's Book of the Year Award for Perfect Ponies: My Pony Care Book. The Society of Authors complained that the work was penned with the help of a ghostwriter, with Robert Harris condemning her nomination as "emblematic of the tacky culture we live in". However, Price, who has just published 17th book Angel Uncovered, said she is unfazed by the opinions of other writers. (more)...
