With Spooky Season firmly in the rear view mirror, Trace and I are now mid-way through our month on Toxic Masculinity. And while we probably could have counted Apt Pupil (and maybe even Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2), we officially kicked things off with Michael Haneke’s Funny Games.
Things get considerably darker with our second entry: Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel‘s Deadgirl. The extreme film follows two high school teenage boys – Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Jt (Noah Segan) – who discover a zombie girl (Jenny Spain) in an abandoned hospital and make the horrific decision to use her as a sex object rather than alert the authorities.
As Rickie struggles with his guilty conscience, Jt recruits other “friends” like Wheeler (Eric Podnar) to assault the girl. Things get out of hand, however, when a pair of jocks, including Johnny (Andrew Dipalma) – the boyfriend of Rickie’s crush,...

Yesterday, we shared the news that Encyclopocalypse Publications, the company that not only brought John Skipp and Craig Spector’s novelization of Fright Night and Jeff Rovin’s novelization of Re-Animator back into print, but have also commissioned new novelizations of older films like Scared to Death, Wishmaster, Vamp, Titan Find (a.k.a. Creature), and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, is set to bring us a novelization of the 1989 Troma release Redneck Zombies. But that’s not the only novelization they currently have in the works. Encyclopocalypse Publications has also announced that they’ve got Snow Shark author Brian G. Berry working on a novelization of the 1986 low budget classic Nail Gun Massacre, while A Bouquet of Viscera author Bridgett Nelson is writing a novelization of the unnerving 2008 film Deadgirl!
Written and directed by Terry Lofton, Nail Gun Massacre told the following story: Forget about that guy with the chainsaw.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Gadi Harel, co-director and producer of Dead Girl – described as a “controversial festival stand-out” – returns to the horror genre with Ashes to Ashes, the latest project to be optioned by Amazon Studios. But there’s an intriguing original twist on a familiar scenario: What if a group of teens battling a murderous evil spirit was terminally ill and therefore already facing death?
Gadi has always been interested in the movies, has written features and shorts and has tried to write as much as possible. It wasn’t until after Dead Girl that he contemplated a career as a writer for hire. In fact, when he submitted Ashes to Ashes he considered it more of a writing sample unsure as to whether or not anyone would take to the material – not that he wasn’t proud of what he wrote. So it came as a wonderful surprise when Amazon added the project to its development slate.

Amazon Studios continues to expand its movie development slate with two exciting new projects – Ashes to Ashes, a horror film about teens who were facing death long before they showed up at summer camp; and Hiber, about a frozen world where the privileged few sleep through terrible winters, unaware of looming threats.
Amazon Studios has an open-door development process, for movies as well as series. Learn more about how to submit your script.
Details on the newly optioned projects:
Ashes to Ashes
Writer: Gadi Harel
Genres: Horror, Drama
Logline: A young adult supernatural thriller that takes place at a summer camp for sick children, where a group of terminally ill teens discover a sinister presence that awaits their souls once they die.
Why we optioned it: It’s an entirely new slant on a familiar set up. We’ve all seen movies about summer camp teens being terrorized by a murderous otherworldly lunatic,...

Earlier we shared the horrific red band trailer for The ABC's of Death, and now we have the green band version. This version is much tamer, but still gives us a glimpse of what depravity lurks in the film.
Synopsis:
Twenty-six directors. Twenty-six ways to die. The ABC's of Death is perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning fifteen countries and featuring segments directed by over two dozen of the world's leading talents in contemporary genre film. Inspired by children’s educational books, the motion picture is comprised of twenty-six individual chapters, each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given free reign in choosing a word to create a story involving death.
The film's directors include Banjong Pisanthanakun, Angela Bettis, Adrian Garcia Bogliano, Jason Eisener, Ernesto Diaz Espinoza, Bruno Forzani and Héléne Cattet, Gadi Harel, Thomas Malling,...

26 directors got together and put together a film that depicts various ways of being killed according to the alphabet. The result is filled with blood and boobs, and it’s totally insane.
The ABC’s of Death is what happens after people in Hollywood decide to make a film after spending a whole night indulging in hardcore drinking and controlled pharmaceuticals. The trailer doesn’t offer much in way of plot but there’s plenty of gore to go around, along with boobs, blood, and various furry animals doing nasty things to different parts of the anatomy.
From a woman stepping into a shower with a chainsaw to give herself a home-style breast reduction to a guy punching a dog during a unique fight-to-the-death, this is one film where you won’t be able to guess what’s coming. Oh, did I mention the Claymation horror story? Yeah, there’s one of those,...

A crazy red-band trailer has been released for The ABCs of Death, showing what kind of terrifying madness awaits those that are going to see the epic anthology horror movie. I think you have to be a hardcore horror fan to appreciate the insanity that this movie has to offer. Seriously, it looks pretty horrific. This short red-band trailer is Nsfw, as it contains lot of blood, carnage, and boobs.

Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.
Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.
While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...

By clicking here you'll be able to download and read the official screenplay for the unproduced sequel to Deadgirl, Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel's festival favorite about two teenagers who make a shocking discovery (a woman tied to a bed that's anything but dead) that not only threatens their friendship but also their lives. ""My idea for the sequel was to try and tell a story from the point of view of a female outcast and what would happen if she found the Deadgirl this time ... instead of using the Deadgirl for the impetus of her sexual fantasies, what if she used the Deadgirl for her revenge fantasies instead?"...

Dread recently met with Brit director Simon Rumley as well as actor/producer Marc Senter and just-returned-from-Shanghai VP of Phoenix Films Edward McGurn. We engaged in a rather lengthy conversation, riffing on subjects ranging from Rumley’s hard-as-nails flick Red, White & Blue to his involvement with the upcoming horror anthology The ABCs of Death.
Other topics were discussed also over a quartet of cocktails beside the rooftop pool at the Andaz Hotel (formerly known as the ‘Riot House’ to those with a knowledge of Southland rock history). Overzealous security, McGurn’s classic Mustang, drinks and horror: You’ve gotta’ love Hollywood!
For those unfamiliar with his name, independent filmmaker Rumley (pictured right) burst onto the scene in 2006 with his written and directed horror film The Living and the Dead, a critically acclaimed movie which also was the recipient of awards from both the Austin Film Fest and Sitges. The horror anthology is really coming back, and if things work out well Drafthouse Films, with Timpson Films and Magnet, might be right at the forefront of the mini-trend with a new project called The ABCs of Death. This is a massive anthology inspired by kids ABC books, in which twenty-five directors and one contest winner will each "be assigned a letter from the alphabet that represents a word to act as a springboard for a short. It will be up to each filmmaker to interpret, from accidental deaths to murders committed in cold blood." In other words, this might be a bit like Edward Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies. But with directors like Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and Srdjan Spasojevic (A Serbian Film) making the shorts, it could get a lot crazier than that. The full director list and a cute teaser poster is after the break.

Drafthouse Films, Timpson Films, and Magnet Releasing have hired a whopping two women to be a part of the 26-chapter horror anthology film The ABCs of Death.

We've seen announcements for some interesting horror anthology films over the past year including Paris I'll Kill You [1] and Chillerama [2], but now it looks like Drafthouse Films and Magnet Releasing are partnering to put together one ultimate horror anthology film to rule them all. The movie is going to be called The ABCs of Death, and it will feature 26 (!) different directors, all contributing their own short segment related to a different letter of the alphabet. While 25 of the directors will be established filmmakers, one will be chosen by an international contest -- not unlike how Jason Eisener's Hobo with a Shotgun trailer won the SXSW contest to earn a place on select prints of Grindhouse. As it turns out, Eisener is one of the established filmmakers who will be directing a segment in this movie, along with Nacho Vigalando (TimeCrimes) and Ti West (The House of the Devil). Hit...

Here at Dread Central we love anthologies, and this bit of news that just came across the wire sounds like we are in for the anthology to end all anthologies as Drafthouse Films, Timpson Films, and Magnet Releasing are teaming to produce The ABCs of Death, a 26-chapter film that 25 established horror directors -- plus a contest winner -- will direct.
From the Press Release
Drafthouse Films, Timpson Films and Magnet Releasing announced today that they will produce The ABCs Of Death, a twenty-six chapter anthology feature that showcases death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty. Alamo Drafthouse CEO/Founder Tim League and Timpson Films CEO Ant Timpson will co-produce. Magnolia International will also handle all international sales. Production begins in June 2011, with completion slated for January 2012, six months, six weeks and six days later.
Twenty-five established directors and emerging new stars from all over the world are participating.

Artery, Blood, Cutting... Attack, Beheading, Cannibal... An alphabet you didn't learn from Sesame Street is currently in the works, collating 26 short films by 26 globe-spanning directors into one gloriously messy ABCs of Death.Springing from Drafthouse Films and their happy experiences making friends at Fantastic Fest, the project is "an anthology showcasing death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty." Producer Ant Timpson says he was inspired by his sons and their pre-school books. "The idea of subverting that format to reveal a study in all the dastardly and humorous ways a person can leave this world appealed on multiple levels," he explains. "It was somewhat fitting to learn that the earliest forms of the ABCs books actually did use fear of punishment to teach the young."We're already kind of alarmed by the premise, and positively apprehensive given some of the names already involved. A random glance down the...

Back in 2008 we were treated to the Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel helmed zombie horror 'Deadgirl'. 'The Devil's Muse' and 'Zombiegeddon' writer and actor Trent Haaga penned the script and according to the Hollywood Reporter it appears that a sequel script is ready. Surrounded by controversy and accusations of misogyny on it's release the flick featured a couple of teenagers who come across a zombified naked girl in an abandoned mental institution. Things start going even further down the morbid passage as an even darker necrophiliac-style take on things rears it's unsettling head. Shiloh Fernandez ('Red Riding Hood') and Noah Segan starred with the gorgeous actress Jenny Spain (below), who starred as the dead girl. But word is that the sequel will flip it around somewhat by seeing what a group of young women do when they discover a naked zombified man!...

What exactly counts as an underground horror movie? Frankly, that’s a tough distinction to make. “Underground” films are generally, by definition, genre-less concoctions. But, if one wanted to use a broad definition of “underground” to mean a low-budget film that didn’t enjoy a large theatrical release, well, that counts for a wide breadth of what used to be called “Direct to DVD” features.
According the website Instant Watcher, Netflix currently has 576 movies available for streaming in the horror genre. The streaming horror movie titles I’m listing below are indeed low-budget films that have flown under the radar because they didn’t enjoy large theatrical releases. But, also, they each have an almost indefinable quality that sets them apart from their peers.
They’re a little more imaginative, particularly for their low budgets. A little stranger. A little more grotesque. Quirkier. More outlandish. However you want to describe them,...

Ah, remakes. So much tinkering. Such little interest in preserving what made the original films they're based upon good in the first place. Sadly that's usually the situation, but we can always hope for the best, right?
Bloody-Disgusting got word today that Gold Circle's remake of the Danish thriller Murk, or Mørke for you purists out there, entitled Merciless will be getting itself some good old fashioned rewrites courtesy of Ed Dougherty (Blackout).
The film, directed by Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel (the team who brought us the ultra disturbing indie effort Deadgirl), tells the tale of Jacob who, after his brain-injured sister dies from supposedly slitting her wrists on her wedding night, follows the trail of her mysterious fiance. Jacob soon finds that this man has a routine of killing crippled brides-to-be, and therefore he must face his sister's death and risk his own life to make sure the...

Exclusive: Bloody Disgusting learned that Ed Dougherty (Blackout) has been hired to do a rewrite on Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel's Merciless, Gold Circle's forthcoming remake of the Danish thriller Morke (Murke). The original tells the story of Jacob who, after his brain-injured sister dies from supposedly slitting her wrists on her wedding night, follows the trail of her mysterious fiance. Jacob soon finds that this man has a routine of killing crippled brides-to-be, and therefor he must face his sister's death and risk his own life to make sure the self-acclaimed "Angel of Death" does not strike again. Word has it Dougherty will be incorporating a high concept cutting edge science angle to the thriller. Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel also directed the indie coming-of-age thriller Deadgirl.

The first time I watched my screener copy of Deadgirl, I silently took it out of my player, placed it in its case, and put it on my shelf. My thoughts after watching the film were so upsetting that I couldn't quite articulate my feelings about it. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I knew I had to watch it again to organize my thoughts, but for some reason, my hand refused to pick up that disc and put it back in the player.
And when I finally did watch Deadgirl again for the purposes of this review, I remembered what it was that was keeping me from watching. Her eyes. Deadgirl is on one level a perfectly functional zombie flick (and quite literal,...

Low-budget DVDs rarely come as nasty, disturbing, and as controversial as Deadgirl, out now from Dark Sky Films. Just the plotline alone isn't for the squeamish -- and you've been warned: Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and J.T. (Noah Segan), a couple of high school outsiders, kill time one day by cutting class and rummaging around a long-closed, dilapated insane asylum. Deep, deep in the bowels of the place they come across a naked woman (Jenny Spain). She's filthy dirty, her hair is matted, and she's chained to a table. And, apparently, she's dead. Rickie wants to help her, but J.T., the far more dominant personality of the two, immediately decides to keep her, much like a toy or a doll to be played with. It's too simplistic to describe Deadgirl as a zombie movie. It's really not; the girl just happens to be dead, but won't die, with no further explanation offered.

Having divided viewers and sparked a lot of chatter on the film-festival circuit and at midnight shows over the past year, Deadgirl has now arrived on unrated DVD from Dark Sky with a reversible cover reflecting the way the movie subverts expectations of the undead and bad-girl subgenres. Initially packaged on the outside is the traditional zombie image seen at left; on the inside is the more provocative art seen below.
The movie (reviewed at length here) is both a gory ghoul opus in which the living corpse receives more violence than it inflicts, and a femme-fatale film of sorts in which the title character is confined to a state of inactivity for much of the running time. Specifically, the catatonic DeadGirl (Jenny Spain) is discovered bound to a table in the basement of an abandoned hospital by Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and J.T. (Noah Segan), teenaged pals united by their high-school-outsider status.

Drawing from a broad range of influences the likes of Boxing Helena, director Atom Egoyan, and the collective works of David Cronenberg, this dirty micro-budgeted little nasty comes front-loaded with a provocative squirm-inducing premise that will no doubt drive strong ancillary business. But randy adolescents open for a thinly veiled skin flick will be largely disappointed. Similarly, those sick to the back teeth of torture porn would do well not to dismiss this as just another bandwagoner, as co-directors Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel have far more on their minds here than simply mining a gimmick for the purposes of titillation.

This past Friday was the New York premiere of Marcel Sarmien and Gadi Harel’s coming of age horror flick Deadgirl. Co-director Harel was in attendance (as were a pair of single-digit aged relatives) for a midnight screening that played to a packed house of the curious and the depraved. The understated Harel introduced the film with little fanfare, clutching a plastic shopping bag as if he had just returned from the supermarket. He promised to return after the film for a Q&A, and did, clutching the same bag like some sort of non-biodegradable security blanket.

Issues of gender have been discussed in relation to slasher films for almost as long as frequently unclothed women have cowered beneath and fallen victim to phallic blades. The same hasn’t been true of zombie cinema, since transformation into the undead has tended to render questions of male/female identity moot. That changes with Deadgirl, a troubling, attention-grabbing and already polarizing first feature by directors Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel. Working from a screenplay by Trent Haaga, whose previous credits for Troma and other low-budget outfits gave little indication of the thematic ambitions expressed here, Sarmiento and Harel flip the genre script on its head. Deadgirl (playing midnight bookings in selected U.S. cities and at Montreal’s Fantasia festival this weekend) begins by establishing as its “heroes” a couple of high-school slackers and best friends, Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and J.T. (Noah Segan). Neither one of them has...

I first met Los Angeles filmmakers Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel last October, outside a screening of their coming-of-age creep-out Deadgirl in Sitges, Spain. It was far from the only entry in the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia to explore transgressive themes involving female sex slaves, secluded basements and last-minute shocker twists. Indeed, the festival offers a feast of such things.

Director: Marcel Sarmiento, Gadi Harel. Review: Adam Wing. Every now and then a low budget horror movie comes along that not only surprises you, but also turns out to be one of the strongest movies you’ve seen in a while. Don’t get me wrong, Deadgirl will offend as many viewers as it entices, if not a little more, but there’s something about this twisted little tale that will keep you hooked until the bitter (and rather tasteless) end. Rickie and Jt are high school misfits, they rarely attend classes and the other kids wont even give them the time of day. One hot, tiresome afternoon they decide to check out an abandoned mental hospital and come face to face with a gruesome find, a naked girl covered in plastic, chained to a table. More importantly, she’s still alive. This is the part of the movie where things take a drastic,...

Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel's Deadgirl is already available on DVD in the UK but still awaiting cinema release in the Us. Ahead of its bow in 'limited engagement' from July 24, Bloody Disgusting have received a top quality bootleg leak of the trailer which you can see below the break. If you want to catch the picture in cinemas, there's a list of it's currently scheduled engagements also at the site. The film is essentially a zombie picture, as the trailer will reveal. Not the typical zombie picture, mind. It revolves around two young men who find a woman chained up in an abandoned asylum and, upon discovering that she's undead, wonder just how they might enjoy (read: exploit) her. Trent Haaga was the scriptwriter for Deadgirl. Previously, he's acted, written and produced (as well as made sandwiches, driven cars, rubbed shoulders and all that stuff) for Troma productions.
